This is one of the few that I actually snorted at. Nice execution really helps as well.

Nice - and one of the few to take the sword out of it's sheath.

u/FullNoodleFrontity Nov 28 '13
Are you sure it's a sheathed sword, I thought she was holding a Shinai.

I think bokken might be what you were thinking of. Which, in spite of being made of wood and referred to as a "practice" sword, is not a toy and shouldn't be used to beat people about the head unless you wish to seriously hurt them.

Nope- it was made of bamboo and looked like this:

As /u/FullNoodleFrontity said the correct name is 'Shinai' but we always referred to them as 'Kendo Sticks' as Kendo was the sword fighting component of our training. That said it is possible she is holding a Bokken, although to me there looks to be a pattern on it - which makes me think it's more likely a sheath - I've only ever seen plain wooden swords, sometimes with patterned handles. Either way - being hit of the head with any of these isn't that much fun.

Well, I'm not an expert- but my Sensai used to beat us over the head with a kendo stick to get our attention - I don't think it's one of those as it appears to be slightly curved. Also the way she is holding it- with one hand on the handle and the other on the sheath, is how you would hold it at the ready to draw.

Cool. Not the 'being hit over the head' bit, but cool anyway. Although no expert, you've had more exposure to them than I have - I was going by what I saw in the picture and I assumed it was a bamboo practice sword.

He was a crazy man. His name was 'Helmut' and his eyes looked in different directions.. so you were never sure if he was talking to you... until you copped the stick in the head.

For Johnny and Daniel this was what a day in the park is all about. For Sun Lee however, the strange burning sensation had returned. She knew not the source of this witchcraft, only that when the source revealed itself, she would be ready.

I almost used that exact horse.. but I didn't like that the riders feet weren't in the stirrups. Certainly one of the more imaginative takes.

Protip: Don't add disclaimers like that and you will do better.

I am a bit confused. Are there many people participating and I just can't see until the contest is over? Or am I on my own here? [First time entering]

u/alaskanloops Nov 28 '13
You should be able to see all the top comments at this point, but scores are still hidden.
For the first couple days you won't see any other posts, then you'll see all the posts but no scores, then it opens up all the way.

u/ipaqmaster Nov 28 '13
Thank you for explaining, and oddly enough all the other posts appeared too.

Nice. Did you re-color the tunic or replace it completely?
2
u/CanadianSandGoggles Nov 29 '13
Thanks! I recoloured it. Took a very long time as it started as a pretty dark colour and I wasn't getting the best results as I'm fairly inexperienced when it comes to recolouring. I tried to recolour the baseball pants to match but it ended up just looking sorta faded out as you can see... I suppose I could have just found some grey pants instead of trying to use white ones now that I think of it.

First battle! Whoo!
Raleigh Beckett needs a new Jaeger co-pilot, but what use would a sword be when piloting a giant robot? (Pacific Rim)
I tried, I honestly tried with the eyes

Yeah, by my count (as of Thursday morning):
- 96 submissions
- 31 are completely unique
- 17 ninja/samurai movie related (not including jedi/sith)
- 11 jedis/people with light sabres
- 9 baseball players
- 8 combat games (e.g. mortal kombat) (but that goes up to 12 if you include the dildo/penis sword)
Those 17 ninja/samurai movies can be further broken into subcategories:
- 6 generic ninja/samurai movies
- 5 animated ninja/samurai movies
- 3 last samurai spinoff movies
- 3 kill bill/tarantino movies
I'm at work and I'm bored to death... 2 of my 3 submissions were done at work. Is it time for PSB #90 yet?

u/undercome Dec 01 '13
You are my new favorite PSB submitter. Especially after the week before last's travesty.
