I'm in the process of learning Photoshop [v.CS5 ext.]. Critical Assessment/Constructive Criticism is not only welcomed, but necessary. What's something I could have improved on and how?

Blurs on smoke are a bit odd. Feather/blur mask on their legs a little. Just keep upping the gaussian blur value until you don't really notice a transition any more.

u/StopReadingMyUser Dec 11 '13
Interesting. Never considered that about the cut-outs. Thanks! Something I can use.
As for the smoke trail, I wanted to keep it a bit cartoony, but at the same time I couldn't find an effective way to blend them without making it look warped and liquified. Tried the smudge tool, but too weird looking, and the blur tool didn't seem to do much either.

u/ChuckStill Dec 13 '13
Maybe add another smoke layer, but of ambient/very transparent smoke. Or something like a smoke shadow.
2
u/fumf Dec 11 '13
The top tail blur is a little weird, I think it's the angle, it looks too horizontal and probably could be toned down a bit.

I cannot overemphasize how much I like this.
If there's one thing I could be critical about though, it's the reflection on the floor. Shouldn't each skater's reflection be angled towards the camera? Like this.

After seeing this I went back to every other submission in this battle and un-voted it. This one has my vote and my vote alone! Great idea, great execution!

A tad late, but I was wondering what font you used for that shop?

I used the actual cover girl logo and created the H out of the other letters. Thats the way my pioneer ancestors would have wanted.

Wow... A Spanish helicopter, no less.
I like the idea of the guy trying to get out of the way (even though, or maybe because, he's in an odd place). The placement of the rollerskaters and their transparency could use improvement, but if it's your first time participating, improve you will.

I like the direction you took this one, including the monochromatic scheme. Good choice to pull out only one of the figures in the edit.

If this is the sequel to optkr's Falling V, I'm afraid it may end very badly for the Burj Dubai.

Which one did you clone for the sixth skater?
2
u/FullNoodleFrontity Dec 11 '13
I didn't clone her. I searched for the image, found the source site (here) and grabbed a skater from a different picture in the series. When I mirrored the girl the text on her top was reversed so I cloned that part, but the rest was just pasting her in from another image.

The year is 2016. Chaos has descended upon Earth, and society is crumbling. There was no one reason for all of this; no zombie attacks like all the films predicted, no meteorite wiping everyone out in one painless fell sweep.
I guess if I had to pinpoint a place in time where everything started to go wrong, it'd be 2014. January, a couple of weeks after New Year's. It was all over the news -- scientists had perfected a method that would solve world hunger, genetically modifying chicken embryos to produce giant chickens (not unlike the one on Family Guy), all of whom only required minimal feeding and resources. The public's response, of course, was divided: there were those who praised science and innovation, and those who thought science had gone too far and playing God would have dire consequences. It was the hottest of topics; you couldn't mention the tastiest form of poultry without igniting a vicious argument. Even Twitter's trending topics replaced Bieber with Nandos.
The only thing that ever made the headlines that month was Sandra Bullock, who had mysteriously disappeared after a publicity visit to Cape Canaveral (to promote her Gravity film coming out on DVD or something, I forget - there's more pressing things to worry about, you know?). Rumours of her death were rife; others suspected she was sick of the spotlight and had just simply disappeared. Either way, no-one knew what had happened to her, and the million dollar reward to find her sure helped keep the interest up.
The one story that didn't make the news (except in Britain, of course) -- the one that, in hindsight, probably should -- was the cold weather. It was the sort of cold that made "global warming" seem like a myth: coats wouldn't help the chill; it'd permeate through your layers, penetrate the skin, and permafrost your very bones. Of course, people turned the thermostats up, overused the hot water, doubled up on coats; anything that helped.
Well, that all added up and sent oil and petrol prices silently skyrocketing. The air everywhere filled with Shanghai smog, and global warming finally kicked in, if only a little bit. The one good bit of news was that no-one could afford to use their cars any more, so pollution slowed down -- it was the lowest greenhouse gas emission in recorded history. People started getting healthier and fitter, thanks to a mix of walking, cycling and roller-skating everywhere, and eating ridiculously healthy chicken (as the months grew on, they managed to fit your five-a-day in there). Things were starting to look up.
Until the Maryville Incident, that is. Actually, that's probably the point in time where everything started to go wrong. Probably should have started here.
Maryville in the USA was one of the biggest poultry farms in the world --it'd turned a town from a population in the thousands into the biggest city in America; heck, the biggest in the world. One of the senior supervisors, Michael Gabbell - my boss - was working with a cold, and in his influenzan stupor, miscalculated the feedlot ratio.
As soon as the chickens ate, many of them dropped dead. The ones who didn't, grew bigger than we'd ever seen. We're talking dinosaur size here. Bigger than houses. It was like something out of a cartoon; the birds grew so quickly, they didn't have time to react as their heads popped the factory roofs off. The squawking was so loud, all of us ending up nearly deaf. But that wasn't the worst of it. When they squawked -- and I don't know how it was possible -- they breathed fire. If I wasn't 100% certain, I would have told myself I was in a movie. But this wasn't a movie. It was reality.
We all hauled ass out of the factory, before it collapsed or burnt down. Not all of us made it out alive. Thousands unfortunately perished: the officials never got to make a full count because the fire-breathing chickens were territorial. They would just kill you before you got close.
Eventually, many of the chickens died (the genetic modifications shortened their lifespan to a few months), and the rest left Maryville, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
The fire-breathers had left us all without homes, cars, electricity, jobs, and food. We were royally screwed, but we had to rebuild.
Eventually, we started patching radio and satellite connections, and we were able to communicate with the outside world again. To our great surprise, we had a radio communication from just over 30 miles ahead of us, in the mesosphere.
Turns out the Sandra Bullock film was actually a documentary of the first civilian spaceflight gone horribly wrong and the woman we'd been seeing on Earth was a body double. Sandra had miraculously survived for over a year sustaining only on the moisture inside her helmet and eating her limbs and internal organs, which allowed her to float on the edge of space like a balloon.
We established communication.
"This… is …andra Bul…ock. Is any…ne …here? Over."
"Sandra Bullock? The Proposal was a terrible film. Over."
"I… kccchtt… know. Please help. Mayday. I'm stuc… in the stratosph… thirty miles… Over."
"Actually, it's the mesosphere. The stratosphere only goes up to about 30 miles, so you'd be in the mesosp—"
"Just… send help. Over."
"Jeez, alright. Celebrities, huh? So full of themselves. Over."
"Please. Over."
"Sandra - you mind if I call you Sandra? - You probably don't want to come down. We've run out of fuel, giant fire-breathing chickens have invaded the Northern Hemisphere, and Miley Cyrus went on a killing spree and killed all the other pop stars so she's the only one in the charts now. At all. Her songs are getting pretty depressing now. Over."
"Damn. OK then, I'll just hang around here. Can you, like, send some food up in a helium balloon or something? Over."
"No can do. We stopped eating anything else but giant chicken, and they sort of went all mutant-y and murder-y. Actually, we're trying to find someplace safe to hide. Reckon you could help us scout a location? Uh, over."
"Sure, why not? Beats playing Charades with the moon people. If you head on to Interstate 69 -- there's no cars -- you'll be able to follow that road to safety. There's a chicken on the other side of the hills, but it's far enough for you to avoid if you get your skates on. Over."
"Thanks, Sandra Bullock. Over and out."
"Wait! Before you go, you should know there's a U—"
Well, get our skates on we did. Our "gang", the Flying V's, were all ready to go; we got in formation, and skated as fast as our green Spandex and inlines would take us. Oh, and then a random UFO showed up out of nowhere. I guess we were all a bit preoccupied with the fire-breathers that we didn't notice.
My name is Doge. This is my story.

I wonder if raynydayz entry: Those anti-gravity skates are improving was intended as a sequel to this... and if so I hope the Burj Dubai has some good insurance.
