From there on out, each comment's vote total will be visible, and entries can be sorted by karma (just like any other reddit thread).
The battle will end on Sunday, March 16th.

Personal favorite. What is that background from? it look like a model train scene. also reminds me of a realist minecraft picture.

Thanks man! It's a photo of the Chocolate Hills by photographer Didier Baertschiger. Accidental google find, but guy has some phenomenal work!

Wow! unreal looking place. I love when nature is more surreal than my own imagination.

Curious how people find their source images. Do you remember what your search phrase was when you found that?

u/ULTDbreadsticks Mar 16 '14
Something along the lines of 'rolling hills landscape' which lead me to a photo of the Chocolate Hills. Then proceeded to search for 'Chocolate Hills photography' and BOOM.

Using the absolute worst in animation tools...

Better than I could have done.

Nice of you to say, but I doubt it.
- I used Paintshop Pro to create 46 separate jpgs.
- I used VirtualDub to combine them into an uncompressed avi
- I used Microsoft GifAnimator to convert the avi to a gif
- I then went to ezgif.com to compress the gif to a reasonable size.
And as strange as it may sound, I ended up deleting some of the frames since the animation appeared smoother without them.
I have limited access to decent editing software at work

Every time I make a gif the file ends up too huge to put on imgur, even if its one of those two frame "party hard" style gifs. I need to watch some tutorials on this shit.

Same here... mine was over 5 mb coming out of GifAnimator. I discovered ezgif.com yesterday and after uploading my 5 mb gif, it compressed it to under 400 kb with no real loss in quality that I could see (yes, that's right, it was really that crappy at 5 mb).

Well, I met you once and said you looked like a cake, and you said "cakes one to dough one". So yeah, pretty obvious really.

EDIT: I'm not happy with the canvas texture but I had to match it to the Mars image somehow. I'd like to tone it down a touch but I didn't save the PSD file.

u/RoyalPrinceSoldier Mar 13 '14
That's awesome! Nice concept.

Cheers. For how it should have looked, check out /u/lains-experiment's entry.

Thanks. Your mountain transition is great. but definitely start off with the highest resolution images you can find. You never know when a quick Photoshop job is going to turn out to be a great idea, and you don't want to be caught with your resolution down.

Strange... Your submission has been visible to me for about 20 minutes. I've seen submissions visible for up to 5 minutes in the past but never more than that until now.

Can I ask how you did the shadow?
1
u/MadnessLLD Mar 14 '14
Not my submission but I can tell you how I do shadows. Duplicate the layer with the subject and put it underneath the original. Add an adjustment layer and drop the exposure to 0 (making the subject black). Then do a transform warp to drag the 'shadow the proper direction, etc. Adjust the opacity to preference. Then I like to add a gaussian blur to finish it off.
1
u/blomhonung Mar 14 '14
Thank you for that, I'll try it next time I'm photoshoping. I usually use the burn tool or try painting the shadows + some opacity changes, but that just turnes into a mess and never looks realistic. Your way seems so obvious now that I know about it. Thanks again!

It looks good for an amateur. One thing you can do is look at the surrounding scenery and how the shadows go and replicate it with the objects you add. Just a suggestion for the future :)

Since you refuse to give us the location of Morpheus only one question remains... will it be the red paint or the blue paint?
