A lot of people seem to be interested in how this was made. Here is a gallery showing some of the steps

Nice work. Some people think this is just filters but I know this is some hands on detailed work. Quality work sir.

If this was done in photoshop I'd love to know how. Did you completely draw the whole thing?

u/smileykitty Apr 30 '14
Photoshopped the guy into a painting I found online, and then "painted" over him in the same style as the painting

So in this battle I've voted for two images. Each of them has completely different styles but both make it look like the street performer is part of a painting.
Although I think it would've looked better (albeit less appropriate) if you kept the guitar instead of turning it into a sitar, I think you did a really nice job on this.

u/smileykitty May 02 '14
Thanks very much. Thought about keeping the guitar, but thought it would be more fitting to the theme with the sitar :)

I posted a step by step gallery as a reply to my submission

Looks cool. I'm guessing you use a tablet? I tried to work with one once and I was ready to set it on fire within a few minutes. One of these days I'll have to commit to getting used to it.

This time around I figured I'd document the changes I made...

heh, your gifs look like my gifs

I'm not sure whether or not I should take that as a compliment... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) The end result might be similar but the way I made it was a bit of a kludge.
I didn't actually record my work as I was going along but instead, whenever I added or significantly modified anything on it, I did so on a new layer. To create the animation I simply hid all the layers except the background and exported as a jpeg. Then revealed the layer I added next and exported as a jpeg. I repeated that last step until I arrived at my final image.
Then I used an online tool to combine the jpegs into a gif and another online tool to optimize it & drop its size.
Now that I've thought about it, I could probably do a much better job on the animation... When I do 'shops at work, I do so with the graphics apps running in virtual machines (I've got PaintShop Pro in one VM, Photoshop, AfterEffects and Premier (CS2) in another. Ideally I could use VMWare's recording capability to record the whole process and then just edit & convert the video.

shops....at work? You can get paid for this? sign me up

u/FullNoodleFrontity May 01 '14
Yeah, 'shops at work.
It helps that I'm ridiculously overqualified and horrendously underpaid. I used to teach college-level computer programming but I was laid off. Now I do software testing for a company that doesn't give two sh!ts about its employees; I make just a shade over $50K/year but I could easily make 50 to 100% more if I quit and went to work elsewhere, I'm just too friggin' lazy to bother.
I also know as much or more about programming than the guys who write the code that I test and I've managed to automate a lot of the work that I'm supposed to do. There are three other testers in my department and they each put in 40+ hours/week. I think I put in about 2 hours of real work each day and I still manage to get more accomplished than any of my co-workers.
So my manager(s) bring me all the high-priority, critical stuff that needs testing and then they leave me alone to get it done. I run a handful of scripts to test the hell out of those programs and then spend 6 hours/day browsing reddit, taking the occasional online course, playing a few games, reading, and honing my 'shopping skills.
It may sound sweet but I to tell you the truth... I hate it.

Yeah I understand, it just looks like a non-descriptive run on sentence. What if you started with Name of Metal Album - Venice Beach Guy with the image, then can put lyrics you make up under it repeating like a song, I dunno.

Entirely possible, but I probably won't have time till the weekend to try and fix it (sorry, but I threw it together right before catching a flight.).
Alternatively, if anyone has AE and wants to play around with it, I'll happily upload the files.

What is that vehicle??
1
u/marklross Apr 30 '14
To tell ya the truth - I have no idea. I just assumed it was a mock up for some sci-fi movie. Here's the original pic. Perhaps you can ask the photographer. /if you find out - please let me know.

u/killerapt Apr 30 '14
It is actually a 3D render based upon the Mad Max vehicles. This site has the most pictures
1
u/FullNoodleFrontity Apr 30 '14
The artist who rendered it is Marek Denko (http://marekdenko.net) and here is a link to the page for his buggy series.
