This is just beautiful to look at. Well done.
EDIT: I'm going to be super pissed if something funny/silly/mediocre wins and this doesn't.

u/lains-experiment May 21 '14 edited May 21 '14
It happens. I wasted too many hours being pissed at this same thing. Entertainment value is what is the ultimate judging of this. Don't devalue the clever intelligents of comedy in the face of pure Photoshop skill.
r/ Photoshopbattles has become more of the Conan O'Brien of the internet than just a Photoshop skill competition.
That being said, I still hope this does well!

Don't get me wrong, I post stuff that's stupid as hell all the time. This is my favorite sub because it makes me laugh every day. Sometimes the stupid stuff is the best.... I just really think this one deserves it.

u/JoshuaHaunted May 22 '14
I totally agree with you. I am just happy and appreciative to get positive comments like yours and the others. I've won one of the past battles, so that's good enough for me. Now I just do it for the fun, if I win, cool, if I don't, well that's cool too. There's some talented and clever people that post here, and I equally enjoy work from everyone!

Here here, I've also noticed that lately a lot of winners have been gifs and animations that are produced by programs more similar to After Effects than Photoshop, now I mean they're still beautiful works of art, but maybe they'll be more suitable for /r/AfterEffectsBattles?

Holy Crap balls. This is why I joined reddit and this group, to get inspired to get better at PS. Great Work!
(I am not going to lie, my first take was, "F this guy and his talent" but that was out of jealousy)

That's amazing! Did you make that from different parts or is there a bird robot image? Either way, that's awesome!

u/JoshuaHaunted May 21 '14 edited May 24 '14
I really appreciate that man! I made the bird parts from scratch. I would make a selection, like the beak, and then put it on its own layer, then I used the "Chrome" feature of the Eye Candy 7 Photoshop plugin. I set it up for a rough, but condensed texture, with a fairly high bevel and an "office space" reflection map (So it would have those reflected window lines that are in the final background image) at a slight blur. Then I would shade that layer and add the drop shadow, then move on to another selection, like the top of the head and then do it all again. Then arranged the layers in proper order, and lastly I went in and made the bolts, and other machine parts in much the same way. The only part of the bird not made from scratch is the tank treads, the tubing for the neck, the internal machine seen through the back piece (which is actually a selection from the girl robot's neck), and the bird's wings.
*Another comment where I go into more detail, for those that are curious Bird Work

You are consistently surprising and awesome. Great stuff dude.
3
u/RoyalPrinceSoldier May 23 '14
Thanks dude! Actually, I'm doing another bubble 'shop right now on the kangaroo pic from the daily battles. I recently learned it so I'm practicing it!
3
u/undercome May 23 '14
Can you point me out a tutorial on the web or did you learn elsewhere? I really want to buff up my materials, I literally just learned to sort of fake cylindrical bottles.
13
u/RoyalPrinceSoldier May 23 '14
I learned it from here (worth1000)
Also, I attempted to make it an ice instead

Brilliant. That seems so obvious now that I see it; elegant solution. Great job on the ice.

Woah! Great gif! What software did you use to make that wing animation?
8
u/strobanik May 21 '14
Heya! Thanks! It's Photoshop and Zbrush actually.
2
u/RoyalPrinceSoldier May 21 '14
ZBrush for animation and lighting? Is zbrush a 3d software?
3
u/strobanik May 21 '14
Yes, exactly. It's mostly for sophisticated 3d stuff, but I think it's fun to use their light / materials when image editing too
4
May 21 '14
I think they might have used puppet warp.
3
u/RoyalPrinceSoldier May 21 '14
What about the lighting? I think the light on wings changing is amazing, like it's really shiny.
3
May 21 '14
Yeah I noticed that, maybe he has extended photoshop and used some 3D wizardry. I've been playing with 3D on non extended and it's fairly limited, but perhaps the extended version is capable.

Great concept! There's a lot of awesome 'shops in this battle!
2
u/FullNoodleFrontity May 21 '14
Thanks. I toyed with the idea of changing the color of the wings to better match the original sails on the junk but decided to leave them.

Hey guys! I stumbled into this sub a few weeks ago and have genuinely enjoyed myself! Thanks for making reddit a cool place to waste time. This is my first attempt to officially join in on the fun so please be nice. Also I beg your forgiveness ahead of time if I've mistakenly broken any subreddit-etiquette.
Without further ado... I give you:
(You guys probably don't care, but here's the screen cap from the movie Rio if you're interested)
Also, I'm sure you could do better, but for the lazy... Here is a cutout of the bird.
3
u/rawveggies May 21 '14
Nice work, you might want to post the bird at /r/cutouts.
2
u/michaelarney May 21 '14
Thanks! I tried, but I must have the formatting wrong. Automod deleted it. Owell. I'll have to see if I can fix it later. Actually, It looks like there's a few others popping up in here. So I'm sure someone else will do it before I get the chance. :)
3
u/rawveggies May 21 '14
I manually approved it. Imgur automatically converts png's to jpg's when they are over a certain size, and it throws AutoModerator for a loop.
My favourite image host right now is https://mediacru.sh, hopefully the next RES update will include them.

You have my up-vote, I wish a cut out was included in a lot of these contests, but then people would say that cutting out the object is part of the skill. I am not one of those people! Thank you for providing this.
