The Rules

The Schedule

  • All entries will be hidden for the first 48 hours.

  • Voting will open on Wednesday, after which all entries will be visible.

    Contest mode will be enabled for another 24 hours. This will sort comments randomly, obscure vote counts, and automatically minimize child comments.

  • Contest mode will be disabled on Thursday.

    From there on out, each comment's vote total will be visible, and entries can be sorted by karma (just like any other reddit thread).

  • The battle will end on Sunday, June 29th.

    Next week's battle will be posted the same day.

I like the job you've done in matching both color and specularity. Did you desaturate and colorize or did you use that magic blending thingy that CS6 has (and I don't have)?

I have CS2 so don't know about any magic blendy thing. They actually needed more color. I use curves to increase the yellows and reds, then some desaturation to tone it down. I used a high pass filter and then mostly hand work using blur, smudge, burn/dodge and clone tools.

I too only have CS2 but I tend to use another editor - I suspect it has fewer capabilities but I'm much more familiar with it.

Your technique sounds complex but I find the more work put into it the better the end result and in this case it shows.

I've done manual matching too but usually by desaturating both images and then just playing around with brightness & contrast until the greyscale images match, then colorizing them until the original color is restored.

thanks! and basically a whole bunch of messing around with Brightness/Contrast, Levels, Hue/Saturation and Color Balance. Hard to give a specific method since I just determine what needs to be done by eye.

Nice work on the general texture! How did you work with it?

Thanks! I used the patch tool and set it to transparent, then copied the texture from other parts of the painting onto their faces. I also used the smudge tool to sort of create some brush strokes so it would look more painting-like.

I know what you mean. I had a bear of a time trying to think of something to do. I deleted my first submission before the contest opened for voting - I liked the concept I came up with but my implementation was crap. I submitted two more images on Monday but I'm still not really pleased with either of them.

Do mind that when you just slap it into Photoshop and bump up saturation, there's bound to be artifacts appearing; for example in the girl's hair.
