Maybe it's just me who likes a smooth-looking shop better than an audacious but obvious shop, but at any rate, you got my favorite.

Really nice work, one of my favourites in this thread. Especially how you subtly made the car look like it was part of the illustration. Lots of great details seamlessly added. It must have taken some time to get right. Beautiful!

Much appreciated!
You're right that it took some time. I've always admired those old advertising painters' work, but never had the chance to practice their style. These weekly battles are a nice chance to spend some time trying to do that, even if not in paint.

A lot of those illustrators were extremely skilled painters, not many people can paint that way today. Back then there were tons of artists who could do that.
I'm guessing you used one of the PS filters, like the watercolour filter to do the car, but it looks like you must have done more to it than just that. Care to share?

I agree. Nothing but respect for those folks.

Sure. No secrets here.
I didn't use a filter. Maybe there's one that can recreate this style; I don't know of one though.
For most of the car stuff:
- Desaturate the layer via method of your choosing
- Posterize down to 4-6 values
- Smudge, blur or otherwise smooth out noticeable jaggies
- New layer (multiply) -> paint colors
- New layer (normal) -> paint highlights
Xzibit: I tried the same workflow on Xzibit's head and for parts of his clothes, but it never looked right, so I just ended up "painting" those in the end.

Very good work. I think that the way you've manipulated the images makes the whole thing hold together seamlessly more than most. It doesn't look like pieces stuck together, but a complete image. You got my vote.
There's a couple other entries that do that too but I'm also a sucker for vintage ads and graphics, so I'm a little biased...

Glad to find another one!
Thanks for the kind words.

Agree with Shappie. I toyed with the idea for about 3 seconds and thought "I don't even know how to begin" Great work!

Thanks! And I'm a Transformer nut, so when I saw the car, this was my only option come hell or high water, lol

I missed this weeks shop. Seeing yours, I don't mind. This is bloody brilliant. I like the incognito. Well done on the color on the parts.

u/JoshuaHaunted Sep 13 '14
Thank you! The coloring was interesting to say the least, lol. Though, it almost seemed the hardest part of this was coming up with a name for him that hadn't been used in the Transformers universe. :P

pretty depressing but I love it
1
u/MMVCR33 Sep 12 '14
Thank you kindly for your love, but why depressing? Look how happy that prototypical 1950's family is? Sure, their home town is being destroyed, but they're off to their nuclear fallout bunker in the country, full of all the comforts of home.

That's very reassuring. I don't know why I didn't think of it this way. I hope they managed to save the dog though

u/escott1981 Sep 12 '14
Thats really nice! Did u just draw that or did u edit the car to make that?
2
u/MrFlopkins Sep 12 '14
Thanks! I used a tablet to "trace" it freehand in an attempt to make it cartoony.

That's a funny idea!
3
u/Leska1 Sep 09 '14
It would problaly be alot better if it wasnt because i suck at Photoshop. Somebody with more skills than me could problaly make it look more natural for the car to be there.

Look at older posts. I made that, exact same background. This post should be disqualified.
6
u/ScousePete Sep 10 '14
It's not altogether unexpected that two people would come up with the same idea. Mine is one of three shops of animals driving the car. there are four Back to the Future references, four Cars (the Movie) and two Mario Brothers.
It just shows that sometimes great minds think alike!

First. I posted this before voting started. Second. Replies to this post is automatically sorted by "random", therefore i would not be able to see your post except if i looked through all the replies, and by doing that i still have a very little chance of finding your specific post without checking you profile.

The Tragedy of Maurice and Henry
This is my first try at a weekly battle, and also my first comic style picture. There's also a JPEG format here

u/treemd8025 Sep 10 '14
That looks great! I really like how you made it look so much like a cartoon. Good job!

I was messing around and made the car a somewhat-train, and then decided I should at least photoshop the car in as is, so I made it the car pulling the sports-train from Top Gear, with my train-car next to it. Link
*edit - This is my first photoshop entry into the weekly battle, so don't be surprised by this failure of a Photoshop.
