Vintage clockwork robot destroys Illinois capital
Thanks to my buddy /u/ilgnome (Amatuer photographer/Professional asshole) for the background

It was a dark time for us here in the state capitol. Mr Burns had just left our Power Plant, yet another governor was going to jail and they were filming parts of Legally Blonde 2.
The Clockwork Robot attack was literally what helped us through those dark and terrible times.
P.S.
I am a professional asshole.

Really nice, the way you matched the graininess.

Ditto. Retro Godzilla matches the robot design much better than Pacific Rim as well.

I've been looking at this one one and off for a few days now and I have to say: Wow.
I really enjoy how you built it from scratch, the speaker holes are a superb detail and the overall effect just works.
I think you probably made this look too effortless looking at the vote count for it. You inspired the hell out of me.
I mean, my entry is damn lazy compared to this.
How was the thought process on this project? Did you get the idea right away and went for it?

Thanks! I'm glad you like it!

Ha, ha. No worries. It doesn't bother me that seemingly simpler images get more votes, it just means that some people didn't like what they saw in my image enough to upvote it. I know that any image on here will only be seen for a few seconds; I don't think this particular image comes across as well as it could in those few seconds. Live and learn.

Don't talk yourself down. A seemingly simpler 'shop can be awesome.

I decided early on that I didn't want to do a "Robot attacks city" image. (Nothing against those who did – there are some good ones on here – I'd just done it before.) I tend to think about concepts in terms of simple scenarios, 'pushing' on elements to see if it makes them more interesting. Here, I was thinking about Legos, and who plays with Legos. Kids play with Legos, and they play at building things. Kid robots play with Legos and they play at destroying things.
I still like the concept, but I'm not sure the image serves it as well as it could. A few destroyed Lego buildings would probably help it.

I really like the idea of the broken city thing. The idea didn't carry across to me on the topic of it all, and I think it would have added to it.
It's funny because if it would have been a kid playing with it, then it would be crystal clear. I am biased to meatbags it seems.
I didn't intend to talk myself down, just to enhance the awe of the work you put in - two sides of the coin eh?
I enjoyed this little chat. Good folk's around /r/photoshopbattles

I had a feeling it might not be clear when I submitted, but the deadlines are deadlines.
Thanks for the feedback! I really appreciate it!

After looking at this for a while, I can see how brilliant this is. It has the original image, and its background. It then brings other element in, very harmonically.
some of the edges are a little too sharp, but other than that, this is superb work.

Nice grain matching!

Oh, thank you mr fatdoughnuthole! Comming from you that is taken as quite the compliment. There are several steps on the grain so I am happy that someone reacted to it. Cheers!

Where did you hide the stock image?
Edit: ecerybody was using the robot so I missed the fact that the rock was used. Thanks to /u/Equinoqs for fixing my eyes. And appologies to /u/Sadisticc there is a chance that my comment made people hesitate to upvote his pic. So much shame right now, have an late upvote.

u/spideyson Oct 01 '14
yeah there's no way he morphed it like that...is there?
3
u/blomhonung Oct 01 '14
I'm 99,99% certain that there is not.

u/spideyson Oct 01 '14
but...so many points.

The rock he's standing on looks like the only part left of the original photo.

This is fucking Ace, greaterade! Nice soft colours on the robot. The bear is a bit skewed and I can't pinpoint why. I do love this entry.

Your concept matches the childishness of the robot design really well. It's a great fit, and unexpected. Awesome job!

How did you make them blurry?
1
u/Suckassloser Oct 01 '14
I merged each row into a layer and used iris blur (in filter menu under blur) which allows you to create an in focus effect where the surrounding area is blurred. I then kinda cheated a wee bit and used the blur tool to touch up things a bit!

Did you make this in a 3d program or how did you go about it?

Good for what is.
You have a story, and it's a little funny, which is good. You just need to make the subject more dominant and start working on making the shop something more than a cut out that's dropped in a scenes.
Just keep entering.
It takes a while for even a Photoshop master to figure out what it takes to win here. It is more creative visual story telling than Photoshop skills.

u/TehAlpacalypse Oct 01 '14
Agreed, I've been looking at some of the older ones just for stock image practice
