Operation | Closed Operation: Real World Toons

The Operation

Create an image with cartoon characters in a ‘real life’ scenerio.

  • Image sourcing not as critical this week

  • Pretty straightforward, but here is an example:

entry: Bugs and Daffy hit the traffic beat

Good luck everyone.

Previous Agent

Congratulations to /u/milvus, who was the winner of the previous Operation: Pareidolish with the entry Battle of the Gladiators", Smokin' Joe Frazier vs. Big George 'Lean Mean Grilling Machine' Foreman, June 15, 1976. Congratulations!

Prizes

The winner of this week’s Operation will:

  • Receive not one, not two, but THREE MONTHS of Reddit GOLD! Courtesy of admin /u/cupcake1713! Woo Hoo!! Thanks, cupcake!

  • Get a number added to their contributor flair.

If you this is your first win, your standard flair will be replaced by this winners' flair. On your second win, you'll get this winners' flair, etc.

  • Get to keep the trophy for a week, after which it's handed on to the next winner.

    (more information on flair here)

The Rules

  • Submit your entry as a comment to this thread.

  • You can post as many as you want.

  • All entries must be an original image (or GIF when appropriate) created by the submitter. Images unaltered by the submitter or not created by the submitter will be shat upon and flushed.

  • Please be sure to tag NSFW entries appropriately.

  • If you see anything inappropriate or entries not properly tagged, either report the comment or send a message to the moderators.

  • To vote for an entry, just upvote the users comment.

You can vote for as many different entries as you want, but please do not downvote. Downvotes will not be counted when deciding winners.

Upvotes should be based on quality of entry, creativity, and accurately reflecting the assignment. Of course, we cannot control how you choose to vote yet, as our mind control device is still early in its beta phase.

  • Every entrant gets a contributor flair.

These will be handed out by a bot, but due to our comment hiding system, sometimes it misses people. If you entered but didn't get one, just send the mods a message, and we'll fix you up.

The Schedule

  • All entries will be hidden for the next 60 hours. (until Saturday, October 25th) Around 18:00 UTC-ish, voting will open and all entries will be visible.

Contest mode will be enabled for another 24 hours. This will sort comments randomly, obscure vote counts, and automatically minimize child comments.

  • Contest mode will be disabled on Tuesday.

From there on out, each comment's vote total will be visible, and entries can be sorted by karma (just like any other reddit thread).

  • This mission will end on Wednesday, October 29th.

Next week's Operation will be posted the same day.

If you have any suggestions for future Special Operations, please send a message to the moderators. All suggestions will be given consideration. When your idea is used, credit will be given.

You know the rules, now play ball!

I'd watch a Spongebob/LeBron James basketball movie.

... on Netflix.

... maybe.

Foiled Coyote, nice touch.

1

u/mortbringsli Oct 26 '14

Oh god, is that where the expression to "foil someone" comes from?

3

u/DeathByTrayItShallBe Oct 26 '14

You peaked my curiosity, apparently adapted in the 1600's from a hunting term for “spoing a trace or scent by running over it,” which makes this term quite fitting for this shop :) http://www.dailywritingtips.com/foiled-again/

u/PicturElements Oct 26 '14

Damn. That's a great concept, bringing out the dark side of cartoon production. Deep and trippy, man.

2

u/mortbringsli Oct 26 '14

This is magic.

Episode TABF16: More Trouble with Trillions

After Mr. Burns becomes Secretary of the Treasury and prints another trillion dollar bill, Springfield adopts its own currency (the "Spring").

u/lumm0x Oct 25 '14

Very nice!

1

u/DaminDrexil Oct 25 '14

Yikes! Didn't know this opened for voting today; I'd better hurry up and finish the second half of my entry!

Thanks for the kind words, Operation guru ;)

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '14

Damn... do have to go back and un-vote for all the other ones? I'm torn.

As a huge The Simpsons fan, I LOVE THIS! Excellent job, my friend!

1

u/KaiserMuffin Oct 26 '14

Why is it in Russian too? xD

1

u/fatdonuthole Oct 29 '14

This looks like legitimate currency. Great design, great execution! And the attention to detail in the 10¹² and Mr. Burn's signature puts it onto a whole other tier.

But I'm curious, how did you edit this in Photoshop, considering that Photoshop usually detects and denies users trying to edit currency? And what font is the tall 'TRILLION' on the left?

Thanks, man :)

how did you edit this in Photoshop, considering that Photoshop usually detects and denies users trying to edit currency?

Haha! Good question!

The reason a lot of imaging software / scanners / photocopiers prevent you from editing / printing some bank notes is because they detect the "EURion constellation". However, this pattern was only put to used in the late '90s, and not all banknote designs use it.

I based my Burns bill on a series 2003 100 dollar bill, which didn't use the pattern. My Springfield "Spring" was based on the new €10 note, which does use it, but I built that one from scratch (so there were no problems).

And what font is the tall 'TRILLION' on the left?

The original font was called "Edition", and looked like this. However, the kerning wasn't perfect, and lines that made up the serifs / vertical lines of the "N" weren't right. To get things to match up, I converted the text to a shape layer and adjusted some of the vector points. Then I added some angled lines to shade the "hollow" parts of the letters. Finally, I added some "bleed" lines (to make it look like ink seeping into paper), and blurred / coloured / textured it to match the rest of the banknote.

This was the result - and just for comparison, here is the original note.

Was that picture taken in the Shire? It's beautiful! I swear I had a dream about it three nights ago.

1

u/BestInBinary Oct 30 '14

The picture was taken by a redditor a few months ago. I might try and go find it

29

u/olafpkyou Oct 24 '14

We all start somewhere. If someone really wants, I'll post sources. Otherwise I'm too lazy to put them up. Far too many of them.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 26 '14

Pretty much all of these are hilarious but you did a lot of work. I really like it. Since you asked I'll request for sources por favor?

How the hell did this get this many points!?

This should be buried deep in the "score below threshold" trench.

6

u/TheBlazingPhoenix Oct 23 '14

not really cartoon but animation

just smile and wave boys, smile and wave...

if animation is prohibited, then I'll go with this one

he's not sure about that too
