The winner of this weeks battle will:

The Rules

  • Submit your entry as a comment to this thread.

You can post as many as you want.

  • To vote for an entry, just upvote the users comment.

You can vote for as many different entries as you want, but please do not downvote. Downvotes will not be counted when deciding winners.

  • Every entrant gets a contributor flair.

These will be handed out by a bot, but due to our comment hiding system, sometimes it misses people. If you entered but didn't get one, just send the mods a message, and we'll fix you up.

  • Please be sure to tag NSFW entries appropriately.

If you see anything inappropriate that's not tagged, either report the comment or send a message to the moderators.

The Schedule

  • All entries will be hidden for the first 48 hours.

  • Voting will open on Tuesday, after which all entries will be visible.

Contest mode will be enabled for another 24 hours. This will sort comments randomly, obscure vote counts, and automatically minimize child comments.

  • Contest mode will be disabled on Wednesday.

From there on out, each comment's vote total will be visible, and entries can be sorted by karma (just like any other reddit thread).

  • The battle will end on Saturday, March 5th.

Next week's battle will be posted early Sunday morning.

Best of luck, everyone, and have fun!!

Mate!! This is seriously impressive work!

I couldn't even think of a decent idea for this image but you have it down. The detail matching is absolutely spot on!

Thanks mate. Not gonna lie, I lost patience a few times working on it. I was the same, couldn't figure out what to do with it to begin with. Believe it or not but this started out life as a transformer, then I tried creating some sort of rocket superbike. Once I figured out that wasn't gonna work I started messing about with steam trains and eventually found the source sketch image I used. Its funny how things work out :)

This just knocked my socks off!

Thanks Captain :)

God damn that's impressive :O

You've gotta show us how you did that!

2

u/Cmatthewman Mar 04 '16

Cheers Damin. Probably the most cutting and pasting I've ever done in a shop. Must've had about 80 layers of scribbles and hatching. Killed my computer a few times too :)

u/DaminDrexil Mar 04 '16

Damn! Just read your other comment about it, too. It sounds like you gathered a collection of basic sketch lines, and manually added them together to get the right density / luminosity; is that right? Either way, it turned out great :)

I was got really into replicating engravings in Ps about 18 months ago, and developed my own technique for doing the shading automatically. Here's a relatively quick (possibly NSFW) example. Apologies on the source material; 'twas the first person I found, on /r/pics, that wouldn't look out-of-place!

The engraving lines layer I used was smooth, with just a touch of ripple effect for variation. You get more hand-drawn-looking results with less geometric patterns :)

I use a similar technique to yourself for getting the outlines; although I use "high pass" and threshold instead (with a bunch of levels controls w/ masks for targeted adjustment).

Thanks for sharing. She fits in well :)

This is just amazing. You are going to let us know how you did this, aren't you?

First thing I did was to reduce the image size and use the posterize filter in the filter gallery. The black areas were selected using the magic wand select and pasted onto a new layer to give this kind of image.

The image was then placed onto the source image with the foreground items/man copied and pasted to the front of the engine.

To get the sketchy effect I used the lasso tool to cut out the image as this leaves a rougher line than the pen tool.

The infill shading was a combination of scribbles with the pen tool, and cutting/copying small pieces from the main source image and also these sketches I found online: here, here, and here. This was the time consuming part :(

u/brainstormer123 Mar 02 '16

Very nice :-)

3

u/BoomerKeith Mar 02 '16

Very cool. How did you do that?

5

u/fiveminus Mar 03 '16

For the racer cockpit I covered the wheels of an old Mercedes F1 car with airplane tail wings. I drew the connecting hardware on the engine and the rope with the brush tool. Then I flattened it all. To turn that all into line art I used photocopy in filter gallery with black and white as foreground/background and set it to multiply. I drew a grid in illustrator and pasted that underneath. At this point it was all black lines on transparrent. I put a scan of folded paper underneath that and put a light displace filter on the grid and the racer (and the text) with the piece of paper as the displacement map. the final step was putting a blue to white gradient map on it all.

u/BoomerKeith Mar 03 '16

Thank you! It really turned out amazing. I hope others realize how much skill it took to get the final product.

I guess you deserve the extra point since you got creative with the beam.

A bit late and a rush job but why not. Jet Engine? But we only need to get up to 88....

u/corzmo Feb 29 '16

Great shop, but it is a jet engine not a rocket...

4

u/Shrimpey Mar 01 '16

Yeah, I am aware of that fact, I just thought that "rocket" word suits better the whole name, that it enhances it's absurdity and fits the vintage style of the poster :P Sorry, if that annoys you, I'm still learning to make proper 'shops, this is just my second entry to this kind of contests :)

2

u/corzmo Mar 01 '16

No worries, I love it! It's okay if you know you're taking "artistic liberties"!

This is the third time I looked at this image, I almost wrote you to say you put in the source and not the image. Found it. Nice clean work. :)

1

u/staffell Mar 03 '16

Haha, are you sure you found it?? This is terrible!

I didn't have time to enter this week, but expecting half the subs to be lightsabers, I decided to do a quick joke entry instead anyway. ;)

1

u/i_am_a_bot_ama Mar 03 '16

Lol. Well I didn't think it deserved to go negative. :p. I do remember thinking ok, here we go with the sabers, Staffells should be good though. I had the sam problem,. all these plans and ran out of time too. Ahh well.
