Prizes

The winner of this weeks battle will:

The Rules

  • Submit your entry as a comment to this thread.

You can post as many as you want.

  • To vote for an entry, just upvote the users comment.

You can vote for as many different entries as you want, but please do not downvote. Downvotes will not be counted when deciding winners.

  • Every entrant gets a contributor flair.

These will be handed out by a bot, but due to our comment hiding system, sometimes it misses people. If you entered but didn't get one, just send the mods a message, and we'll fix you up.

  • Please be sure to tag NSFW entries appropriately.

If you see anything inappropriate that's not tagged, either report the comment or send a message to the moderators.

The Schedule

  • All entries will be hidden for the first 48 hours.

  • Voting will open on Tuesday, after which all entries will be visible.

Contest mode will be enabled for another 24 hours. This will sort comments randomly, obscure vote counts, and automatically minimize child comments.

  • Contest mode will be disabled on Wednesday.

From there on out, each comment's vote total will be visible, and entries can be sorted by karma (just like any other reddit thread).

  • The battle will end on Saturday, April 9th.

Next week's battle will be posted early Sunday morning.

Best of luck, everyone, and have fun!!

If I had to take a guess, the way I would do it is;

Cut out Bunyan

Find stock image of guy looking at table with sawdust

Convert Paul to B&W, use as layer mask for value of the image (so, darker areas on Paul are converted to equivalent shadow etc) and a duplicate mask with a blending mode to lighten for the highlights

Apply over top of an image of some dark wood

Use his outline for a transparency mask (this basically "cuts" his shape out of the image of the wood)

Composite with stock image of guy looking at table

Adjust curves, contrast & exposure until the lighting looks right

Dodge and burn, selective gradients with lightening and darkening blending modes to get the reflections and shadows right

Apply text, transform to fit, use layer effects drop shadow and inset, set layer blending mode to darken

Same thing for bull, then add shadows and voila.

Those are wood shavings not sawdust. 0/10 see me after class.

Thanks for posting this, I didn't know about this method! Still not clear on the layer mask step. Would the equivalent be converting to B&W then Color to Alpha for white?

this is amazing, how did you achieve the painted effect?

2

u/illestillness Apr 07 '16

Thanks! I used the watercolour effect in the filter gallery and then lowered the saturation so that it blended with the background really well. This is what it looked like before I lowered its saturation compared to after

Do you know if there's a gimp equivalent? I don't have photoshop yet lol

Perhaps download a watercolour brush, hide the layer with a layer mask and then reveal certain parts of the image with the watercolour brush (splatters). This is what I should have done in photoshop to make it look more realistic

Alright I'll try that, thanks man

Hipster Paul HAHA.

I didn't even realize he was wearing the "douche hat" in the original until I saw yours.

1

u/ShoopDunright Apr 06 '16

I think this statue started the whole Hipster movement!

He's a lumberjack and he's OK

If you're not familiar with the Monty Python sketch then you really need to watch this

I laughed :) May have been better if he was holding the trophy or a microphone. Either way, I was entertained.

Tip: When putting letters on clothing or over an under layer, mess with the blending modes a bit to make it look more natural. I use multiply a lot when working with tattoos on skin.

Edit - Tip 2: Go through the submissions and check out the ones with gifs of how they were made. I have learned a boat load just from watching how photos are manipulated by others.
