Prizes

The winner of this weeks battle will:

The Rules

  • Submit your entry as a comment to this thread.

You can post as many as you want.

  • To vote for an entry, just upvote the users comment.

You can vote for as many different entries as you want, but please do not downvote. Downvotes will not be counted when deciding winners.

  • Every entrant gets a contributor flair.

These will be handed out by a bot, but due to our comment hiding system, sometimes it misses people. If you entered but didn't get one, just send the mods a message, and we'll fix you up.

  • Please be sure to tag NSFW entries appropriately.

If you see anything inappropriate that's not tagged, either report the comment or send a message to the moderators.

The Schedule

  • All entries will be hidden for the first 48 hours.

  • Voting will open on Tuesday, after which all entries will be visible.

Contest mode will be enabled for another 24 hours. This will sort comments randomly, obscure vote counts, and automatically minimize child comments.

  • Contest mode will be disabled on Wednesday.

From there on out, each comment's vote total will be visible, and entries can be sorted by karma (just like any other reddit thread).

  • The Battle will end on Saturday, September 17th.

Next week's battle will be posted early Sunday morning.

Best of luck, everyone, and have fun!!

What... the heck? How did you do this?

4

u/Globnz Sep 14 '16

Haha lots of layers, an action/ script with water and bubble brushes for the water bender. Regular Disentigration for the red guy. I could send you a gif of the different layers or something...

u/nmgreddit Sep 14 '16

That would be cool. Please do. :) I use GIMP so I probably wouldn't be able to do all that. ;)

With a bit of practice, this is entirely possible in GIMP. The G'MIC plug-in makes it a really powerful editing tool with plenty of filters and effects and it's what I usually go to for creating elemental effects. I've used GIMP before to create more or less the same effects /u/Globnz has used e.g Fiery Rock, Water and Particles. If you can't get your hands on PS then this is a great alternative once you get used to using it :)

cool, thanks!

Mmm .. good answer. Someone might misunderstand and think that you did that all on your own.

I hope that you paid for your copy :)

You made that action? Wow... Don't spend your money all in one place haha

2

u/Eugene-design Sep 15 '16

I'll try .. but that'd be difficult since I haven't sold any of this recently ..

Did you by any chance use the noise filter or pixellate > mezzotint to get the sand particles? Either way, the attention to detail is incredible! I've been looking for a more efficient way of getting those patterns.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '16

What's up Doc!

I would normally use particle .pngs and brushes for this but you've got me thinking now! I wonder if textured glass would be any sort of help. Settings would need to be adjusted of course but I just quickly messed around with it.

Is that with GIMP? I tried the glass filter on PS but couldn't get the transparency.

I'll usually use mezzotint to get the large particles, then "select colour range" to make a separate layer with just random sand-like dots, and apply wave/motion blur: http://i.imgur.com/KyV6BZw.gifv

It's not very efficient but still something cool to know.

Yeah it is mate, you can get those particles as close or as sparse as you like and it's pretty easy to isolate them. I might start using this method for these kind of effects.

Clever work there man, love it! I should really learn how to gif :P

Cool idea!

Don't get me wrong, i really like it, but i asked myself why animated gifs are allowed in a PS Battle... I know that you can create animated gifs within PS, but i still feel that there should be just images and no animations...

First ever submission: Human Dirt Bike :D

Feedback welcome, would love to get better :)

Try fading out the shadow by opacity not by changing colour.

like the idea.

I like it. Do you use photoshop? I'm pretty poor and I wondered if it's possible to create something similar with paint.net :)

1

u/schitzN Sep 14 '16

hey, glad you like it - did you give me an upvote too? ;)

yes, i used photoshop! i do not know paint.net, but i used lots of layers of color correction, filters and layer styles.

1

u/Pegacornpower Sep 14 '16

ok, thanks. Guess I'll have to save some money then :/

2

u/DragonGodGrapha Sep 15 '16

You might try GIMP first, it's heavier than PaintNet and still free.

Banana slip

I had many problems trying to blend in stuff by adding shadows - Burn just decolors it and Brush or putting somehing over it and blending it ruins texture and graininess. Any tips on what should I use? Sounds like a job for Recolor, but I couldn't get it to work.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '16

Another tipp to avoid ruin textures is using the Dodge Tool and the Burn Tool for shadow correction. Very low Sharpness for the tool and low Exposure (10-20%) and play with Shadows; Middletones and Highlights. Always play around on a copied layer.. (sry, english isn't my first language and I don't even know if this are the exact names in ps.)

1

u/Globnz Sep 13 '16

I'm not very good but I think duplicating the layers then put a layer mask on the top layer and adjusting that layer with brightness, contrast, hue, burn, etc. then change that layers opacity and erase the spots you don't need on the mask :) Or just look up some tutorials on YouTube there are bunches.

1

u/JusC_ Sep 13 '16

Ooh, good idea thanks! As I already had the ball in a seperate later layer from moving it I didn't even think of duplicating it and working with transparent cover layers.

I'm just having fun with PS and trying to avoid tutorials and such, so I don't get overwhelmed and quit, which happened with 3dmax :/
