The repopulate one was hands down the best:

Care to elaborate?

rectify and rectum
Both share the part "rect"
They try to fix the picture to correspond to the title AND they end up having anal sex in the rectum
RECTIFY and RECTUM
I thought it was genius. Did that make sense?

I bet more than a few people have me RES tagged now.

u/Malplace Jan 04 '13
Tagged you with "a few people have him RES tagged"

u/effyochicken Jan 04 '13
Lazy, just put "res tagged"

"tagged"
It's happening again...

Future historians are fucked. " Well according to this picture Pokemon graduated in the same class as president Obama. "

For those who don't know, "remove everything one piece at a time" is pretty much the standard response to any weird picture on /r/photoshopbattles. The thread that was bestofed the other day with Obama and the spiderman kid at the White House was essentially the same thing.

It has happened a few times, and as theskabus pointed out, it may be his response, but it is not standard for the subreddit as a whole.
If there is any 'standard response' it is probably the faceswap, even on inanimate objects, but that is true anywhere on the Internet that does photoshops.

Stuff like this is great to show people the fun with error level analysis. For example, the ELA of the image with just the dino is this
I haven't seen many shops where the ELA was so clear.
(ELA uses the fact that new parts of an image in a jpg degrade (fragment) at a different speed than old parts, so you can resave the image at a low quality and compare which parts changed more and which less)
5
u/TheRedJester Jan 04 '13
Holy shit this is amazing. So is this basically using the JPEG compression algorithm to see what was part of the original compression vs. what has been added (and then compressed) since?
For some reason this concept is blowing my mind.

u/kadivs Jan 04 '13 edited Jan 04 '13
basically, yes. The problem with ELA is just that it doesn't work that well for well-circulated pictures. The more you re-save a shopped image without changing it, the less clear the ELA is (also, if the original was a PNG and just the altered one was saved as JPG and there are a couple of other problems). You usually can't take ELA as a proof if an image was or was not altered, but in cases like this here, it's pretty damn awesome.
Here's a more in-depth description. On that site, you'll also find an online ELA tool, but I won't link directly to it to keep it safe(r) from the reddit effect (it was hosted on an own domain before but had to be shut down because it was overloaded)
If you're interested, I can give you an howto to make an ELA in the gimp or photoshop. In my amateurish attempts, I never managed to make quite as good ones as the website, but still pretty nice ones.
EDIT: Ah, one thing, if you play around with it, notice that the brigthness in the ELA means not much, what is important is the brightness difference to the rest of the pic. The "fresher" a portion of the pic is, eg the less times it was saved, the brighter it will be, that's why the dudes in the above ELA are bright, but when you, for example, put in something new from another foto, that other foto might have been saved many many times so the "new" thing could actually be darker in the ELA than the rest of the image. Also, if you try to edit an own pic to see if ELA pics it up, try not to use solid colors as they compress too well (see the description linked above). Just tought I'd mention that as this threw me off a bit when I started playing around with it on my own

Please do write the howto, thank you. For both the GIMP and Photoshop (or preferably just one that isn't program specific at all). This is good stuff.

OK. I actually only know how to do it in the gimp, but they're basic steps so it should be pretty much the same in photoshop. but before I begin, a disclaimer:
I found the way out how to do it by using an old gimp user script. That script never actually worked for me (probably because it was for an ancient gimp version, dunno), but I tried to figure out the steps by looking at the scripts source (don't know the script language) and using above description as a reference. It's quite possible that there are some steps missing or that one step is maybe slightly wrong.
Also, I only have a german gimp version at hand, so my translations of the menu entries might be a bit off.
First, open the source image. I'll use the just-the-dinosaur-pic from above.
Resave the picture using File->Save as. After choosing another file name, Gimp will ask you to choose a quality. Open the extended options and untick everything and set smoothing to 0 if it isn't allready. Chose the first one (best quality) for subsampling and also the first one (fast integers) for DCT. Lastly, set the quality to about 70 and save.
http://i.imgur.com/GutF8.jpgGimp will still display the high quality one, so close the image, then open both the original and the lowres one.
Add a new layer to the original one, above the background, transparent. Copy-paste the lowres one in that layer (click with the selection tool outside the image to lock the copy-pasted one to the selected layer). Alternatively, drag'n'drop the lowres-file from the explorer inside the image opened in the gimp, he will make a new layer with it automatically.
Now, for that new layer, change the layer merging mode to difference. You will probably be greeted by a black image. Go to layers -> new from visible to get that black plane in a new layer, then go to colors -> levels and look down, hit the auto button, look back up and your layer is now diamo.. err.. ELA.
http://i.imgur.com/iXS5g.jpgAs I said, the result is not quite as nice as the one from the website (posted above) but still pretty. Play around with different quality values for the resaving and you may get better results.
EDIT: fun stuff, The ELA of the repopulate one looks like one dude giving the ridiculously well-endowed other one a punch in the balls for some reason.

u/thatoneguydunno Jan 04 '13
Thank you. The whole ELA actually makes more sense now, when thought through the process of applying it.
2
u/kadivs Jan 04 '13
welcome :)
I'm just kinda sad that after all this work (I forgot the step about the levels and tought it was just adjusting contrast which diddn't work and had to re-examine the script again), the dude just reposting one of the images got 40 times the karma. WHERE'S MY TASTY KARMA BITCHES?Nah, I'm just kidding

I have no idea how anyone pulls this kind of stuff off. It's magic to me.
14
u/Graphiite Jan 04 '13
It's a lot of using the clone stamp tool. Basically, you copy a selection from the existing picture and that becomes a brush.
For example, to remove the building on the right, all you have to do is erase the building and then clone some areas to copy over: namely, the ground and the horizon.
3
u/schrodingersays Jan 04 '13
Huh, that's pretty cool. I guess I sort of figured that, but how does it not look like the shape of the removed image with this single color? If I look closely I can't see any border of where the object was.
6
u/Jagerlowe Jan 04 '13
Clone stamp replaces the area with the other area as big as the brush. SO if your brush is big enough to copy an area of dirt with five rocks in it, then it does just that.
2
u/Graphiite Jan 04 '13
Also, brushes have a hardness property that defines whether it fades or not. If the brush is hard, a circle would be a very defined circle with clear edges. If it's soft, it fades out at the ends to nothing. That's why it doesn't look like someone just pasted the other areas on. A soft brush is smooth so that the similar colors blend together.

u/humortogo Jan 04 '13
Clone stamp tool + *content-aware filling.
* Use pen tool, draw slightly around the object you want to make disappear, once done right-click on it and choose "make selection" (don't change anything in the settings), then go to "Edit" and choose "Fill", now choose "Content-aware" and that's it. It works perfectly when the surrounding of the object is of one nature/element (ground, water, wall, etc).

That is a Sinclair "Dino" Dinosaur in front of an old Sinclair station.
2
u/jacobchapman Jan 04 '13
Really? We have one of those exact same dinosaurs at a mini golf course here.
1
u/Pocketzest Jan 04 '13
Yup, there are also several Gas Globes from Sinclair with the famous dino on it, as well as signs and other similar things. Your's is probably a dino from an old station that somebody thought was cool, and decided to keep after the station closed.
I know someone is going to want more info on whatever the hell a gas globe is, so here http://www.gasglobes.com/ Gas globes used to sit on top of gas pumps to advertise different brands and grades of gasoline, and are quite collectible today.

u/Chimp96 Jan 03 '13
...HOW?
5
Jan 04 '13
Photoshop now has a feature that allows you to cut things out of a picture, by copying and pasting little bits from around the piece you're removing. It gives you a smart approximation of what it would look like behind the object.

u/sleeper141 Jan 04 '13
As someone who doesn't know shit about photoshop, i find this amazing! But I'm also the type who likes magic card tricks and has no interest in figuring them out, i just like the magic.

Hey guys, I need your help. Which of you left this comment on r/photoshopbattles about this cat looking like two people in bed? I felt bad that you were getting downvotes, figured out what the hell you were talking about, and am almost done making it a reality... but you deleted your comment. WHO ARE YOU?
EDIT: Whoever you are, your gif is ready: Kitty/Eskimos
EDIT: Here's the timelapse on YouTube

Hey ListenChump,
Sorry, that was me swinging the scythe at the thread. I didn't notice your edits there. Your comment is back up in the original thread, please put these in there if you'd be so kind. The top-level comment stays deleted (no top-level non-photoshop comments allowed in the subreddit for now. Well, unless it's source or more info or something, but no requests, meta, reaction or any of that normal shit.), here it is:
/u/strik3r2k8
Am I the only one who thought the thumbnail was actually the heads of 2 people laying in a bed with white pillows an sheets?

u/TheNarwhalingBacon Jan 03 '13
It was all well done until thebreno123p guy shoddily removed the car, could've been a better job but oh well.

why is this in r/bestof? it was mildly amusing the first time, and now its just annoying

u/TryUsingScience Jan 03 '13
It's a bunch of redditors demonstrating teamwork and skill to do something mildly amusing. It is probably better than most of the things on that subreddit. Hence, /r/bestof. If you're looking for profound comments, that isn't what this sub is for; try /r/depthhub.
