[PSB] I know we already had a Beyonce one, but this need to happen. Beyonce at the half time show looking rather masculine.

What did you use to cut out the hair? It's flawless.

I just made a layer mask using a copy of the red channel, then adjusted the levels. I had to paint some of the interior stuff (face etc), but the hard stuff was more or less done.

Excellent. I've been using PS for a few years now but still haven't got around to using masks.

Then brace yourself for a life altering experience. Masks will change the way you do everything. Nothing you do in 'shop will ever be permanent again. No more erasing. ever.

I've been curious about masks, but never really gotten into it. What are the main benefits of using masks and what times do you use them?

The first place to begin learning/experimenting is probably layer masks. This tutorial is an incredibly basic example of how awesome it is.

Pretty much, it allows you to paint black/white on a layer to reveal (white) or hide (black) sections of it. The same as erasing, except you can always go back and add more white to bring parts back (hard to do if you erased) or add more black to get rid of more (same as erasing).

The advantage to all types of masks is the appearance of permanence, with the flexibility of retaining the originals. When you get real deep in it, you begin to use it to make precision selections that save acres of time.
