[photoshopbattles] DaminDrexil gets asked how he achieved a parallax effect for his submission, gives tutorial on how to exactly pull it off, with pictures!

DaminDrexil is really helpful. I contribute to photoshopbattles every so often and while I'm all right with Photoshop, there's a good bit I still need to learn. I once asked DaminDrexil what I thought was a simple clarification question, and he made an imgur tutorial that answered it. I was blown away.

People like DaminDrexil are why I keep coming to Reddit.
Who am I kidding. It's the silly cat pictures.

Okay, I see it again for the billionth time over the course of 10 months.
Where are all the cat pictures?!? I never see any!

This could be the start of 3D gifs on reddit. It could be revolutionary, I want more.

Here's a subreddit: Wigglegrams

Why are most of them so wiggling so fast?
I feel it detracts from the 3D effect.

Actually, the speed of the wiggling is what gives those pictures the 3D effect. If they were only cycling between the two frames every half second or so, the pictures would not appear to be 3D.

Why are most of them so wiggling SO FAST?
I've seen some which wiggle slower and the effect to me is better.

u/konstar Jul 14 '13
Sorry, I misunderstood what you were asking at first. What I was referring to was a wigglegram that is only composed of two images. If the two pictures were cycled through only every half second or so, the effect would not be as pronounced. In this scenario, it's better for a fast transition between the two frames. The slower ones you are referring to have more than 2 frames. They might be running at the same frame rate, but since there are more frames, the image looks less choppy and jiggly.
Oh those aren't imgur links, RES thinks they are D:

I didn't really think about the ones made of only two frames. You would need some speed for them to look 3D. I wonder if there is a minimum speed or something.

Hmm, I could definitely see that as a field of research or something, looking at how our brains perceive things in three dimensions. Sadly, I don't know much more about how the brain does this :\

I spent way too long looking at the two original pictures and not the .gif, trying to figure out what exactly DaminDrexil actually modified..

Well it should have been the hero of that movie, who eventually becomes the bad guy.

This is cool, but I think creating the scene in 3D in after effects and using a camera is actually much easier.

I'm actually confused about this subreddit. It seems as though it encourages upvoting the submitted links by not forcing everyone to post an np.reddit.com link ... This is weird

The parallax of the runner in the back is fucking terrible.
I mean, great on the guy for tutorials and increasing general knowledge of userbase etc.
But dear god, it huts my eyes because it's just so incomprehensible.

u/AlienHairball Jul 08 '13
You know he did that on purpose right? To make it look like the runner in the back was in fact in front and just a really tiny person. Maybe I'm stating the obvious and you just didn't like it though :)

In front AND flying through the are.
I was a bit obtuse, it's not like he killed anyone, and the tutorial was by no means a disservice to anyone.
Just my brain, man.
I'm okay with portals that disjoint physics and reality as I know it, but tiny flying people? Cmon, man.

Did you not read the part about tinkerbell?... Because that is what it seems like.
1
Jul 09 '13
Like I said, I was being obtuse.
I didn't read any of it because I wasn't going to apply any of it. I don't generally read guides for things that are outside of my areas of interest, I only saw the picture and deargodmybrain

On the off chance you guys aren't joking: You realize he made that runner move differently than the others because it's supposed to look like a little pixie on the other guy's shoulder? It moves more dramatically as we pan back and forth because it's "closer" to the camera.
The joke was that the little pixie won the race.

Um... hasn't this been a known trick since about as long as GIFs have existed?

This really is a best-of. Thanks, OP.
