I think this one will have a relatively short half-life. Should peak around Thursday, with a solid but not as robust comeback by the first of August

Peak around Thursday? No no, it has peaked, today. People will have tired of it by Thursday.

Why does their prayer line curve? They should all be facing the same direction.
15
Jul 23 '13
Probably just misaligned. Usually there's marks on the carpet or whatever to keep the lines straight, but it seems since they are outside its just a little off.

u/seekfear Jul 23 '13
It's not misaligned, it's aligned toward the Kaaba; Direction, location and curvature of the earth are accounted for.

People on the right towards the end of the carpet don't want to put their head on the pavement so they kind of bend inwards. Makes it look like its curved.

Where I come from, most mosques have spare cheap slippers for people who got their shoes stolen. You can take any and return them the next day.

what's the occasion for the first pic? I recognize the location - manhattan, nyc around east 60th and 5th ave. I know there is a Moroccan or some other embassy there, but never seen this before.
15
u/Hawkbit Jul 23 '13
probably overflow from a mosque, they can get very crowded during holidays and sometimes they extend the prayer area to outside to fit everyone for the service.
7
u/donat28 Jul 23 '13
that seems really unlikely - there is no mosque on 5th and 60th...it's all diplomats and embassy staff, plus this is really weird as it would block a major cross street.
This is right on the corner of the apple store, central park, the hotel from home alone (name escapes me) - it must have been either some protest or other event that closed down the street. In the background you can see some green structure - that would be right in the middle of 5th avenue
5
u/ShanghaiNoon Jul 23 '13
Maybe protesters stopping for a prayer break?
2
u/ogleogrebear Jul 23 '13
My guess is that it was a public gathering of some kind. Maybe a demonstration, a public celebration related to ramadhan that started recently or something connected to the flags hanging in the background. Its most probably not your average prayer, women dont tend to turn up to those. On a side note, the guy with the megaphone should pick a better place to stand. Its not appropriate to walk in front of someone who is praying, let along a congregation.

I was working with a Muslim friend on a school project. I stayed over for dinner, and after dinner I was on their computer checking for when the next bus was to go home.
After checking for when the bus was coming, I wanted to ask my friend where the bus stop was. It was at this time that I noticed the house was completely silent, despite his entire family just being behind me cleaning up after dinner.
So I started calling my friend's name, rather loudly, over and over again, no response.
I got up from the computer table and walked toward the living room, calling his name again, and I noticed his entire family praying in the living room.
Awkward.

Having smelly feet would be very embarrassing in that situation.
31
u/gowahoo Jul 23 '13
you gotta wash before the prayer, and since those are 5 times a day, it's really hard to get smelly feet. see more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wudu
7
u/MeloJelo Jul 23 '13
You have to wash your feet 5 times a day?
14
u/glooreddit Jul 23 '13
Not necessarily. If you make wudu ( washing your hands, arms, head, and feet) and can manage to keep it then you don't have to do it again for your next prayer. If you fart, sleep, use the toilet, and some other things, then your wudu is broken.
→ More replies (4)→ More replies (5)4
u/gowahoo Jul 23 '13
Yes! There are exceptions and different schools of thought have different ideas on those but most people just do the full wudu for each prayer.

It would be fun to just walked in front of them and when they all rise say something like; "Thank you, thank you, but I really don't deserve all this attention."
Just make sure you can make a quick get away.

u/alt_ctrl_delete Jul 23 '13
What happens when somebody farts?
18
u/gowahoo Jul 23 '13
I can't tell if you're trolling, if so, carry on.
If not here's an answer! You have to be in a state of ritual purity for prayer. That state is broken by passing wind, so it is unlikely people would fart during the prayer. If you had to, you'd either hold it, or excuse yourself from prayer go to the bathroom, take care of business, purify yourself again, and do the prayer on your own. Ritual purification is called wudu, more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wudu
2
u/aa__ Jul 23 '13
Also, if you fart during prayer and its soundless and odorless, you can continue with the prayer. But you will have to do wudu for the next one.

Actually, it's not uncommon for someone leaving the rows or going between the rows during prayer (for example, if one broke ritual purity during the prayer he has to leave immediately)
Normally, when a Muslim prays alone, the place between him and his Sujud point (where he puts his forehead during Sujud - prostration) is sacred and the punishment in the Hereafter is heavy for those who violate that space. That's why it is Sunnah (tradition of the Prophet, sal Allahu 'alaihi wa sallam) to put a Sutrah (a noticeable object of the size of the saddle or larger) in front of you to accentuate that space.
During collective (Jamaat) prayer, only Imam have to have the space in front of him intact and the rest of congregation covered by the sanctity of that space. So if you come to the packed Mosque during Salah (prayer) you are permitted go between the rows during the prayer to find a place in the corner.
