Just a note on the [deleted] comments under mirautaj's image: Directly below was a pun thread, and further down was an off-topic discussion about Animorphs.
As some of you may have noticed, we occasionally remove chains of text comments in large threads (like this one). The reason we do this is so original photoshops don't get buried.
By default reddit only displays 200 comments, and when this number is passed new comments get pushed below a "load more comments" threshold.
As this is a photohop-oriented sub, and creating images can take quite a bit of time and effort, it is unfair when that work is hidden under a mountain of relatively low-effort joke / discussion comments.
Edit: People are still posting OC in this thread, which probably wont make it past the threshold... without your help. If you're feeling generous, please scroll down to the bottom of the thread and click the "load more comments" button - or sort the comment section by "new" - and help our starving artists!
To add to this, if you click 'preferences' in the upper right corner of the window and scroll down to 'comment options', you can raise the comment limit to 500 by default. It helps quite a bit for some of the bigger submissions here.
Edit: BTW Damin, we all miss your shops..shops..shops..
All of the strange topics that the comments dive into are the reason that many people love reddit. I think it's a little silly to come in and moderate in a way that affects what people are posting. Low effort or not, the things that people were posting could have been very funny. It seems a little bit Big Brother style to go in and change what the people are doing and posting based on how you feel the comments should be organized. If there are 200 off topic comments about animorphs, then so be it.
We have no problem with people having discussions. In fact the mod team puts quite a lot of effort into making sure /r/photoshopbattles is open to anyone who wants to contribute to the posted topic. Trust me, it'd be far easier on us to have AutoModerator just remove any comment that doesn't contain an image link!
Off-topic comments become an issue when they obscure original content. It takes anywhere between 20 minutes and a couple of hours to make a high-quality manipulation - and often these are posted in parent-level comments. It's just not fair that someone else make a joke in response to the top comment, in a few seconds, and receive orders of magnitude more exposure.
Reddit's commenting system is heavily biased towards quick responses, so in a sub dedicated to image manipulation it's necessary to level the playing field.
I get that. But as a fan of pun threads, I wish there was a way to level said field without, in effect, censoring the discussion. Perhaps in future reddit improvements.
