I should explain: This is even more appropriate than you might realize. I'm actually in the Navy myself and when a VIP flies aboard, they get sideboys honors by members from each part of the flight deck crew. Since all the different jobs have a different color jersey, they're called "Rainbow Sideboys"
That's a slang term that I've heard a few times. It's not often used on my ship. Maybe it's more common depending on the area you're stationed at. Like maybe they call them that all the time on the ships out in San Diego, wouldn't know, the ship I just transferred off of was in Norfolk, VA.
Might be a Pacific vs Atlantic thing then, sure. I was in Yuma, and anytime we had sailors come here to train or I'd go with a squadron to do ship-based stuff, I heard that term kicked around. This was also seven years ago, so maybe it's just fallen out of the vernacular.
