entry: Life disguised as Death disguised as Life ...

This is really nice, would make a great album cover. Don't really see how it meets the brief, but it's beautiful

Thank you! the idea was that death's secret identity is life and life's secret identity is death. From an individual point of view there's a lot of difference but from a global point of view they really are the same thing. in the background you can see that spring turns into winter (and vice versa). the head wearing two masks is a recurring theme that I love. I wanted to try something different and that was the first idea that come to my mind. I put a lot of work in it so I wanted to share it even if I saw that I went "slightly" off the path :)

I dig it, it's really nice imagery and the idea behind it is hauntingly true. Hope my comment didn't come across as negative, I suppose who be more famous than death him/herself ;-)

your first comment was very nice and gave me the chance to explain something that needed explanation :) thank you again.

This is such a nice concept.... should have dropped you a note earlier.
I love how you put it into composition, and nice blends and effects. Great work <3

late and half-finished (I barely even started on details) and technically not even an edit... still wanted to share this little concept :)

Dude that's just plain art, no Photoshop about it. Amazing work °o°
You should post this up on r/pokemon it should be seen by the masses

Thanks ❤️
That's my first properly planned (digital) painting project, that I pulled through to a presentable point 😊 ... Still, there is so much I want to do. I might post this in pokemon once I rework a few things. For exmaple, texture the floor, clean up a lot of hard edges on the shelves and bench and especially make a few pokemon heads more recognizable... maybe add a few lights along the corridor.

I actually quite like the unfinished parts mentioned, gives it a rustic feel, I like the idea of another light down the hallway. Very impressive work. Shame it wasn't posted earlier, don't know how much notice it will get

I'm not going to overdo it. I like it as well when the focal elements are painted in much more detail.... It guides the eye and gives more emphasis...
Still, I want at least those heads who catch some light to be a bit more detailed, so you can track the pokedex sequence. That will mostly be Butterfree, Kakuna, Ratata, Ekans and especially Raichu, because I want the gap where Pikas head was to be visible.

I'm glad you shared this. what hardware did you used for this? I mean mouse, graphic tablet, Ipad?

I bought a Wacom intuos (graphics tablet, no screen) recently. Mostly, I want to do 3d sculpting in blender with it. I actually modeled a reference of this scene in blender first to get an impression of the light and composition:

Ditto and the Pikachu are 3d-sculpted.
At the same time I want to get into digital painting, although I am considering to buy an ipad specifically for that... I would prefer painting on a screen and there are some pretty cool apps.
It was a huge hurdle to learn navigation with the tablet. At first it was really frustrating and I kept reaching for my mouse :( Now, I'm finally starting to getting used to it.
This is my second big project... first one I call presentable. The other one still has a lot of unfinished spots but it's coming together:
(never visited but found a cool photo on unsplash)

getting used to a tablet is hard, but a mouse is useless beyond a certain point. I really like the ipad, even the base model has a great touch screen and as you said there are many great apps. I think you really have a great hand, Riomaggiore is impressive being your first big project. I think you know already but just in case I recommend for you to search for speed painting / concept art video on YouTube... really useful for grasping lighting/shadowing methods.

Thanks ❤️
It's coming out well because I have layers and undo 😜 I take my time and test out lots of techniques and approaches... I think it shows that this is an experimental piece. Like, the cliffside, sea, sky and houses are painted in rather distinct styles. I have a bit of experience with color and light from other media. But it also shows through that the individual brushstroke are still very crude... because I don't know how to chose/set up brushes properly, yet. I don't mind that atm, it's also a nice look.
About youtube... that is exactly what I do. Although, I prefer tutorial style videos where they talk about their workflow. Most useful youtubers I found were Boro Drawing and Marco Bucci.
Do you do digital paintings aswell? Got any suggestions for specific yt channels?

Haha, man I don't think this will win, but it is definitely the one that made me laugh the most. Clever use of the Travolta kiss, and is that Cage's face on the logo?
1
u/Maymayfish Oct 11 '19
Hehe, thanks man, yeah it is the cage on the logo, you should also have a closer look at his chest tattoo ;-)
Yeah I don't care if I don't win, I just went for a laugh this time around. Glad I could deliver : P

If I could edit your comment It would say:
The Pope on any given Sunday
The Pope on Friday the Thirteenth
So it's probably best I can't do that.

If i could erase your comment, it would say the exact same thing as when i would leave it there, because no one cares.

Welcome! Nice work.
Just a few tips... look out for the weekly & operation battles when they are newly posted and submit your work early if you want it to be seen. Even then, there is quite low engagement/voting in these threads, so don't be too disappointed if you don't get many votes - doesn't necessarily mean that your piece is bad.
Keep it up

Is that donkey
1
u/jasonfireshield- Oct 14 '19
Supposed to be. I wanted to put the face on it but it just looked weird so i settled for making the horse gray. Took WAY longer than the actual Shrek face, probably wasn't worth the time.
