Thanks! I just read your description of your creative process - "picture of my old wooden fence made a grunge from it. Took a picture of a cloud(for my fog brush)" - and I love it. A natural alternative to my artificial Google image search :)

This is the idea I would have loved to have :)

Warning: Timelapse video is twice and long and potentially even more boring than last week.

The amount of work you put in to these sasquatch is truly amazing. Sick edit mate!

Upvoting for sheer effort and time put in

2

u/CptSasquatch Nov 18 '20

Thanks bud! Don't know if it translates in the timelapse but it's loads of fun.

3

u/Xzenor Nov 18 '20

It's not more boring.

Personally, I don't really like the end-result. I don't hate it either; it's just not my taste.

The timelapse however.. That's amazing. Watching you create this is fantastic. The skill and the ease in which you do everything is just awesome and I learn a little something with every timelapse.

So really, those timelapse videos may look boring to you because you already know it all but for others they're even better than the final result :)

I agree on the end result. Stylistically, it's like a merger of photoreal and illustration that may look alright for some subjects, but probably shouldn't be attempted for portraits...unless you're good at it...but I've chosen to ignore that part.

I really liked "Computer Chess", which is a reproduction of an adobe stock image using almost exclusively the source from Battle #429. Sadly, didn't do a screen recording for that one, but did do an animated gif revealing that the chess board was made from the settlers floppy disks. Shared it on battleshops but it got downvoted to zero so I deleted it.

I'm really glad you like the timelapse videos because I'm having loads of fun making them. Not gonna be able to do one next week because I'll be on the road, but will hopefully be back to it the week after.

Aaah I've seen that chess board. I remember it because of the specific shape of the bishop.
I did a submission for that battle as well. Except I was an hour too late....

u/CptSasquatch Nov 18 '20

It's best to get your submission in before the voting begins, but if you're really good (which you are...I loved your entry from last week btw) you can get away with a late submission and still do well.

I love the face! I tried to work with the water to get a shape out of it but it got too messy... yours is clean and intelligible.

I prefer the version without color matching, because it's more on the realism side and it's closer to the watery tones of the original image.

I tried to work with the water to get a shape out of it but it got too messy

I cheated by using additional stock images of splashing water.

I prefer the version without color matching

I tend to agree. Another issue with the color matched version it's difficult to tell the original image was used.

Jurassic Park

Background Source

Lots of complex layer's painted with my homemade grunge brushes, made just for this Battle!

2

u/Maymayfish Nov 17 '20

Pretty cool piece mate. Those grunge brushes look pretty sweet!

2

u/texasfld57 Nov 18 '20 edited Nov 18 '20

Thanks Maymay! I took a picture of my old wooden fence made a grunge from it. Took a picture of a cloud(for my fog brush) took a picture of my bush and added that to the Jurassic Park logo and then added the snowy mountains in the background...those are probably hard to see.. but they are there! It was fun to make! I have know ideal how to make a vid with process it would layout the process better than I can explain..I am still learning new things everyday...these Battles are great source of inspiration, love viewing everyones work, wish I had half of the imagination of some of these submissions...

Your entry is the BOMB! I love it...You put out a flawless entry! looks like a poster for a movie, you made the Gargoyle blend so well it looks real! Love your work!

2

u/Maymayfish Nov 19 '20

That's really cool how you used your own surroundings in making your brushes, adds a real personal touch to the piece. And thanks, definitely not a flawless entry, but appreciate you saying so. Always fun doing these battles

u/neigesdantan Nov 21 '20

I would love to see this with some details more striking (the water, for example). The image would gain from a less uniform softening I think...

2

u/texasfld57 Nov 22 '20

yea...the water was needed some more work..the old soft grunge effect was the type of effect I was looking for,I kind of went overboard with fog..that took away some of the detail. I changed my workflow with this composite, trying different ideas...I am always looking for different ways..thats what makes it fun and less boring. LOL
