Questions/Advice Any of you are picky while eating too?

Been noticing these times that im picky regarding certain foods, every since I was a kid i was always highly picky when it came to chicken with bones, i just cant wrap my mind around eating it, it makes me wanna puke, its not that i dont like chicken but i only like certain parts, like chicken breast (i buy it without bone) and nuggets which doesnt have bones and when it came to fat on meat i also dont like it, when im eating red meat and i bite on a chunk of fat i just feel the urge to puke, but my family just cant understand it, im also very repulsed when it cames to fish, cuz some of them smell bad when cooking and i hate the smell, is it normal having adhd and being picky?

I don’t know if it is ADHD, but word for word the same!

Literally came here to say this exact thing and saw you say it! I’m sooooo happy I’m not the only one who has this issues like I can’t fathom even the thought of eating something off a bone

Same. I'd also add food textures to OPs list. There are plenty of veggies I don't mind the taste of, but can't stand the texture of if they're cooked/prepared in a specific way.

I don't mind raw carrots, but I cant stand them when they get soft or mushy like in a soup or stew. I'll eat an apple, but when it gets baked into an apple pie it just feels slimy to me. I don't mind mayo, or the individual veggie components of coleslaw, but together its disgusting.

😂😂 shit…….same again! Apart from coleslaw. But defo textures!!

Not everything is an ADHD thing.

Exactly, I'm tired of everyone thinking ADHD is the reason for everything.

Sounds like it may be ARFID. It's what I have and one of my docs says it's more common in people like us to struggle with it. If you have any questions about it, feel free to DM me. :)

not at all, I eat like a large dog, there are foods I don't like but eat anyway, some I don't eat (a very short list)

I can relate. I was always considered odd in this matter. I would not eat salads with mayo, ham, sausage, and other weird stuff on the table of family party. I just couldn’t. Other kids ate it. It was hard for me to learn combining different ingredients in I.e. sandwich. I actually never thought of this in terms of adhd, I was thinking I was weird, now I just don’t care. I eat what I want, usually avoiding meat. Maybe it is sensory thing, maybe people with adhd taste food in a bit more complex way.

This is because of your Sensory Processing Disorder. It frequently occurs with ADHD.

No. I like the novelty of trying new foods. There's definitely things I don't prefer to eat, and things I hate and avoid. But every decade or so, I might try these to see if I've changed my mind. Or I might try something in a different context to see if that makes a difference.

For example, I hate raw tomatoes in the US, but I found in Europe tomatoes can be good sometimes.  I absolutely can't just bite into a whole pickle and enjoy it. But thinly sliced in a burger can be good. If it's too thick I'll take it out though.

I don't know that it's a totally ADHD thing but maybe have a look at a few autism symptoms, because food pickiness (especially if you've had it since childhood) is part of that, and is harder to detect alongside ADHD sometimes. I'm not trying to diagnose you over Reddit or say you have anything, but it's worth thinking about, as I don't understand it to be part of ADHD on its own. Yes there are some sensory issues but it's not the same.

Idk if it’s ADHD but as someone who is diagnosed ADHD and Autism, I relate completely to your post. I know lots of Autism professionals will agree that picky eating is definitely associated but not necessarily a sign that you have autism. It’s honestly been a struggle as I’ve gotten older/bigger and need more food to sustain me lol

Sounds like sensory issues.

I was when I was younger but I made efforts to try new stuff as I got older and started interacting with more people. I do have foods I dislike, but I'd have to go out of my way to find something I actually refuse to eat.

You just described me to a T. No one understands my pickiness of chicken and beef and pork, and my complete unwillingness to eat seafood. Guess who married into an eastern shore family that all likes crabs and clams and seafood in general 🙃😅 they do try to be understanding though and order fried chicken for the non crab eaters (all of the in-laws including myself don’t eat seafood lol)

Yup. My grandparents tease my mom and all us grandkids because we "eat like babies". Chicken breast, chicken strips, chicken nuggets. I won't eat bone-in chicken simply because I can't get the meat off the bone though.

I hate fish. I don't like the taste. There are some ways to slip it past me. Swai I can handle a couple pieces of -- my husband fries it in such a way that it's almost like fried chicken... but sometimes I'll get a particularly fishy bite and THAT'S IT!! I can handle the fish fillets at McDonalds, and I love spicy sushi rolls (often made with imitation crab)! :) The spicy mayo hides the fish taste. I can also do some salmon sashimi rolls... but the texture gets to me after a couple.

Last night we had kielbasa and frozen pierogis. I've found that I can handle kielbasa best when cooked in a potatoes o'brien mixture. But alone I have to smother it in ranch dressing and even then I can't stand a ton of it.

I love pierogis but I can taste the frozen. In general I try to keep most frozen items out of the house because I tend to only be able to stomach enough bites to take the hunger edge off and then I cannot stand the taste anymore. (This was difficult early on in mine and my husband's relationship because frozen foods were his bachelor chow)

The sad thing about the frozen foods thing is... I didn't used to have that problem! I didn't used to be able to taste the frozen taste. But after recovering from accidentally starving myself for 7 months I found I couldn't stand some of my favorite frozen foods. RIP pizza rolls. T-T

I don't know if it's because of ADHD, but I was the same back when I still ate meat. I could never eat it off the bone and I'd have to cut off every weird little piece of fat or gristle. I only eat fish now, but I prefer it with no bones or skin (and I cut off any weird looking pieces). I do that with veggies, too, though. Weird brown spot on my frozen broccoli? Needs to be cut off before I'll eat the rest of the floret!

I never attributed this to ADHD, though. I just thought I was an overly picky eater.

Very, could probably write a list of the snacks/meals that I eat on repeat lol. And I am super weird with fruit because of how not consistent they are in texture, vegetables are a little bit better. And I go through fixations where it’s the same food for a week, and then I’ll never touch it again.

1

u/pupfloyd 1d ago

I mean, same. I actually gagged reading your descriptions of chunks of fat and bones. I feel like I'm going to gag again even typing that out.

1

u/UtopianSkyVisitor 1d ago

I am 💯 exactly like you are except fish, I love fish. But the chicken with bones, any meat with bones honestly other than ribs for some reason, and even then I typically use a fork to pull the meat off first. I never thought it could be an ADHD thing.

I haven't been properly diagnosed yet anyway. I'm about to turn 46 and it's only in the last couple years I have noticed the traits I share with ADHD diagnosis. I just felt the need to share I haven't been diagnosed so you know my experiences may not be ADHD related, or they possibly could.

I’m not picky with my food but the very few foods I don’t like is because of the texture.

1

u/pri_ncekin 1d ago

Sometimes, but that’s due to my autism, not my ADHD. If anything, my ADHD makes me try new things constantly.

1

u/DecemberPaladin 1d ago

I’m very broad in my tastes—I’ll try just about anything, and I’m generally excited to do so.

But the foods I do hate I fuckin hate. Mayo, get that shit away from me.

1

u/Kelsosunshine 1d ago

It's the weirdest thing but when I'm feeling down or sick I cannot stand even the thought of the texture of toast.

u/Recondite_Potato 1d ago

I recall being extremely picky as a young eater. “Let it be known that henceforth a line of demarcation shall exist betwixt all foods existing on and encompassed by the boundaries of mine plate!”

I mostly got over that as I got older, but new legislation was also introduced and adopted to support a policy of stricter border regulations vis a vis which foods even received the opportunity to experience said plate. So I guess I didn’t really grow out of it, it just changed forms.

1

u/LetsGoGators23 1d ago

No I am a varied eater. A lot of it comes from never wanting to be a pain in the butt though, so I taught myself to tolerate all foods.

I always had my parents cut the meat off the bone for me and my dad would eat the fat globs 🤢 I also just feel weird about meat in general, I still like it and eat it. But I don’t like the different textures. The random hard piece, or the veins… gross. And I do not trust myself to cook meat. Someone else has to

u/tropicjuicejet ADHD-C (Combined type) 1d ago

Yes like when you eat meat and you bite the squishy part i have to spit it out word for word the same

1

u/TAPgryphongirl 1d ago

For me I love eating meat off the bone because getting all the meat out of the nooks and crannies is like an enrichment puzzle to me (though nuggets are good too). Though I definitely have my brain nope out at certain foods. There's this Souplantation-brand broccoli salad my parents and I have with dinner a lot, but last night I imagined trying to eat it and my mind and throat just noped out, so I had a leftover veggie from something else instead.

u/Soy_un_oiseau ADHD-C (Combined type) 1d ago

It’s not a symptom of ADHD but something many people with ADHD struggle with. I’m the exact same way. I hate eating chicken on the bone, or biting into cartilage or a tendon, fish, or any foods that have a slimy, squishy texture. When I’m eating a meal I need a little of everything in one bite because I can’t stand the texture of just one thing in my mouth. Things just taste different to me based on their texture.

1

u/tiredoftryingtobe 22h ago

As an adult I was able to realize it's the texture of the food when I'm chewing it that makes it hard for me to eat. Raw onions, the base of iceberg lettuce, fat, gristle, meat, chicken legs... Anything that might be tendony- just yuck. Shrimp, lobster, and crab are hard for me to eat too.

1

u/La_LunaEstrella 20h ago

Yes, but I have autism.

1

u/Available_Bother_864 12h ago

Yes I have ADD and I am a very picky eater and even if I like the taste I can't eat it because of sensory issues

1

u/badboyme4u 12h ago

I hate sour stuff and absolutely hate fruits. Don’t like the smell and texture of eggs. I am a vegetarian.

1

u/Personal-pleb2001 8h ago

I’m the same... Cannot eat chicken or steak off the bone.
