Tips/Suggestions What are your safe foods while on meds?
What are your safe foods? What’s easy for you to eat even when you don’t want to? I want all the suggestions and advice and even questions you might have to give!
Context: I’m on 60mg Vyvanse and struggling with the lack of appetite. At my last doctors appointment I weighed in at a whopping 86lbs (I’m not dying!) and my GP was less then thrilled. I now have to go in every month to get my refill but if I lose any weight she’s pulling me off the meds. I can’t afford to not be medicated because I simply can’t function without them.

Breakfast is most important to me. If I eat in the AM before meds, or at the same time as I take them, I find it easier to eat throughout the day. Hard boiled eggs (with salt, pepper, and tajin seasoning) and bacon is protein rich and delicious. Super easy for me to make as well. If I’m super fatigued before the meds hit, I’ll scarf down a bowl of cereal or instant oatmeal. Also love Fairlife chocolate milk. They’re the same company that owns Core Power protein drinks🐮.

This right here! If I eat before I take my meds, I def have more hunger urges throughout the day.
Overnight oats have been my goto. I mix yogurt, dried fruit, quinoa, protein powder. It tastes really good and is a huge protein boost.
It seems protein is something I can eat without issue. So I have jerky sticks, tuna packets, and cheese on hand for snacking through the day.

Liquid calories can be your best friend! Smoothies can be loaded with things like collagen, protein, fiber, and fat if needed. Also, add butter to everything!

You just HAVE to eat. I know how you feel, I lost so much weight, until I had to almost go to the ER once. I had to put a reminder on my phone that says don’t forget to eat.

Nuts, trail mix, that kind of stuff. They’re super healthy and just a handful gives you a ton of calories.

I love this side effect (from concerta) because I was overweight, but it can definitely be a struggle. When I am feeling really averse to food but need to put something in my stomach, I have a protein shake or meal replacement shake. It gets some calories in and something in your stomach, but it's a liquid so it doesn't make me gag.

As someone overweight who meds do NOTHING to curb my appetite nor my impulse control nor my constant desire for the feel good feeling that comes from eating something tasty…. This whole thread of people suggesting easy ways to take in extra calories to be healthy is just depressing.

I’m on Methylphenidate 30mg and im pretty overweight as well I tend to eat scrambled eggs with sometimes a bagel or just on their own in the morning with a coffee and then I take my MEDS and I just push through the day if I start to feel a bit sick I normally a boiled egg or something and then I’ll eat dinner. I do get hungry around 4 o’clock though. But if I don’t eat breakfast and take my meds it the suppressant higher?

Carrot sticks and blue cheese dressing. Currently have 2 lbs of the carrots sitting in my fridge and I'm thinking about retrieving some of it.

I never dealt with appetite issues when I was on Vyvanse (instead had stomach acid problems) but imo you should focus on calorie dense foods that you like the texture of — or at the very least, that you don’t have trouble swallowing. In the mornings I eat oatmeal mixed with protein powder, peanut butter, banana, and granola — this might be the kind of thing that could work for you.
Also honestly if your weight is at this level of concern you might need to do something more intensive like make a meal plan accounting for calories or even meet with a nutritionist. I’m glad these meds are working for you but sorry they’re making it difficult to eat.

A protein drink. I use raw nutrition and cut cake from gains and bulk. The first is made from plant protein and has lots of fruits and veggies in it. The 2nd is whey and has collagen and is super yummy. Mixing the two makes the 1st one way more palatable.

Sourdough toast with jam and cream cheese, Jolly Time kettle corn, oatmeal, cereal, trucker mocha.
That's almost my whole diet. (not a cry for help)

Vanilla greek yogurt and honey oats🫶🏻 it also helps me to think of the food itself as medicine that my body needs, bc we literally cannot function without some amount of nutrients going in. Also Boost & PowerCore protein drinks, I like those too🙌🏼

Honestly, if you can’t make it work like this you might need to decrease your dose a little. It sounds like the side effects might outweigh the benefits on your current dose. And for me personally just a 10 mg decrease made all the difference and I can actually eat again

I love those yogurt packets for kids. Feels like you’re just drinking something. It is better than nothing at lunchtime.

I been on a smoothie kick! We have a little single serving blender, so if I’m having a bad ARFID day I just dump some fruit & OJ in and buzzbuzz

Whipped cream and berries.
Or just whipped cream. Delicious but plenty of fat for calories.

5-min silken tofu. I do like is for breakfast and then I have a lot of protein in me before I take my meds

Tbh lately I've been eating a lot of sugar free beef jerky sticks lol. And Greek yogurt. Protein/nutritional shakes.

Also on 60mg Vyvanse! I don’t have specific food aversions on it, everything just seems unappetizing, and I don’t really get any pleasure from eating something tasty while my meds are working. :/ My go-to meal for something quick, filling, and reasonably nutritious is 90 second red beans and rice with a pouch of tuna and hot sauce.

Triscuits, Wheat Thins, popcorn(my dog loves this one) apples, bananas, grapes, any type of nut bar, trail mix

Breakfast. As much as I can eat. Hard boiled eggs, oat muffins, toast. And then a fruit smoothie at my desk in a thermos mug all day. Then dinner as late as possible.

Peanut butter or just nuts in general. Will definitely help you get your weight back up.
