ADVICE & TIPS ADHD and aging

Does it get worse ? What am I going to do? I was diagnosed at 25 I am now 49, I think sometimes I should live in an institution.. I’m on the highest dose of medication. Any advice on supplements or strategies?

Are you a woman? ADHD gets worse for women as their estrogen depletes with age. Might be worth having it checked (if that applies to you.)

I have been through menopause in my thirties never had estrogen checked.

Menopause never ends. It’s something that you live with until you die. As mentioned estrogen declines which causes dopamine to decline. It may be an idea to get your hormones checked to see where you are so you can consider HRT.

So true. I’m hating life at 51 right now.

Perimenopause? If so, see if you can get HRT.

Try magnesium supplements, see if that helps your medication absorb better.

As for does it get worse? I feel some things are worse as I get older because I used to have limitless energy, and now I’m just tired. Other things are easier because I’ve learnt to deal with them far better than my poor emotionally regulated self in my 20’s ever did.

For sure that’s how I felt until recently now I feel I’m emotionally unstable.

After I posted this I realised I wasn't in the adhdwomen sub but the general adult sub. If you are not dealing with the hormonal realities of menopause, ignore this one. 🫠

I hope I'm not a truthsayer for your future with this OP, but yeah, it gets worse with age. Mine sure has, and I believe this is (partly) why do many women are being diagnosed at the same age as they begin dealing with massive and predictable hormonal changes.

My overall function started to drop at 45 and I thought "is my previously-not-100% -managed-with-lifestyle-depression and anxiety getting worse?"

Got diagnosed at 46 and I'll be 50 in a few months.

Everything is harder for my brain. Every day is harder than the one before. While I "managed" throughout my life with hundreds of hacks and self-talk and vitamins, none of it mattered over I hit perimenopause.

I should not be in charge of anything because managing any part of my life just stresses me the hell out, because I used to be better at it.

The drop and variability in hormones that comes with perimenopause does exacerbate ADHD. It's a whole thing.

What specifically are you struggling with? It's ok if it's a huge list. But that might work better for folks to offer specific suggestions or solutions.

And if none of them work, you can come sit next to me on the struggle bus. 🚌

Cumulative stress and slowly, but progressively slower recovery will do a person in. I was "fine" with unmanaged ADHD until perhaps my late 20's early 30's but with age, more demanding jobs and responsibilities, increasingly fucked up world and all the other thigs, the overwhelm just... gets me. As much as I hate to admit it, I no longer thrive on change and irregular schedules, instead I need much more structure in my life to ensure I also have the time to deload, sleep and relax.

It gets worse, and if you have gone undiagnosed/ unmedicated you will most likely hit a wall and fall into debilitating adhd burn-out and you will not be able to pull yourself from it without help.

I'm pretty sure this is what happened to me. I was diagnosed this year (I'm early 50s), after having a huge burnout last year. I'm kind of lifting myself out of it slowly, but it's been really tough going.

Were you posting from personal experience, or based on some research?

Switch meds, you might have a little less tolerance. Agmatine helps revert tolerance. Try to recover your dopaminergic system: ALCAR, bromantane, nsi189, 9mbc. Cycle all of these and start at low doses. Get from reputable places like science bio. Try to skip your stimulant dose whenever you can. If you need something for mood, maybe try saffron extract or a different drug. Good luck!

THIS SOUNDS AMAZING! ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH USING THESE SUPPLEMENTS, FROM THE SCIENCE BIO COMPANY, IS THERE ANY TYPE OF SUPPLEMENT THAT WORKS WELL TO RESTORE CHEMICALS FROM OPIATE USE OR LONG TERM OPIOID AND USE DISORDER THAT'S NOT ALL HEROIN OR ANY OF THE SWORD ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH ANY REPUTABLE AND SUPPLEMENTS THAT ACTUALLY WILL WORK AND IF YOU ARE DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD AS WELL?

Are you familiar with Lithium Oratate? Have you seen a lot of people being diagnosed bipolar they were actually ADHD or people that was comorbit diagnosis of bipolar and ADHD I actually write it another woman that was suffering with like emotional disregulation she was doing excellent actually from her doctor that she was so hyped up about there is much a lithium or something in the soil nowadays and that it's causing emotional issues so 100 mg which is of such a small milligram of lithium carbonate dissolved within water and sit throughout the day has made a world of difference for her and her emotions

I actually had to decrease my dose from racing heart. I take Omega-3 supplements morning and evening and I also take vitamin D and magnesium.

Intermittent fasting has really helped me. I don’t take medication anymore. The food train is one of the many stimuli that I will Chase during the day. And I think it starts with food. just not eating till later lets me focus on other things. I still drink coffee.

What is it helped you with to be doing the intermittent fasting are you getting any type of headaches and how does it actually give you energy are you overly concerned about your weight at all I just ask because and I really have been healed from it now I believe sometimes however I want to always have a nice body image and feel like I look good I put on a way and I was like 140 some pounds and I felt like oh my goodness I am very thankful for 20 lbs came off and they have some boobs that were messed up I naturally was a three to see why he's crazy on different types of medications and I am not obsessed with any of our I just want to be able to feel like I so look good and I'm strong in my body and I feel good and when having an extra weight and then having been deformed basically in a plastic surgery and I doubt you're telling me he know I need a revision the next time I started throwing up into and I was being exotic dancer things I had a lot of hatred for my mother though and I think spiritually and a lot of people share that when there's hatred from other and which I've forgiven that believe me is very common and I know that Vyvanse actually is prescribed too for the binging disorder or I don't know exactly the purging it actually made them so much more money and tagged on an extra seven years ago and the whole 21 years that had to be planned and I don't know my doctors like really really pro the actual brand new drug doesn't anyone else really notice a difference with certain generics I do on some some of them I do not even feel it with Adderall XR and I can't believe it now there are other generics generic Adderall XR and the brand name one now they're made by the same people but the generic one some people say that it's awful how could that be and can they really differ by 40% and strength I mean you would think it would just be a different color or like taste or just some tiny differential for

I very likely Get the same about of calories, I just eat at a different time. It really does boil down to: eating later in the day lets me focus on other things earlier in the day. I chase stimuli and loose my awareness: that’s a big part of my ADHD.

Eating first thing starts up That food noise. But if I haven’t slept and fast, other things will take the place of food noise, like podcasts, so it’s just one tool in the toolbox. And not for everyone

So relatable, and people don’t understand …ughh.

u/MindfulImprovement 12d ago

Everyone is different of course, but I manage my ADHD completely with my lifestyle choices. Mainly mindfulness, healthy living, and appropriate technology use (calendar and lots of notes of the most part).

What are you actually asking?
