Data is compiled via software developed by the researchers, based on open source satellite imagery (SAR). Though excellent for maps/earthquakes/ archeology and so on, it doesn’t penetrate that deep into the ground (only a few feet).

Would get better results with GPR devices dragged along the surface, and even those can be tricky to interpret.

It likely isn't a "city", as it's doubtful people actually lived in the underground structures. Though, it could be the halls of amenti. The researchers even found possible evidence of glass in the data, and the pyramids are said to be built at the entrances to the halls of amenti.

The same technology was used to successfully identify other underground structures, some of which are even deeper. So, the scans are very likely accurate and something is likely there.
