Kennedy visited indo China while the French were getting their asses handed to them and is even quoted saying that America would also never win a war there... and then brought us into war there. This policy was carried out for another two presidents. Johnson might have been stupid enough to believe the North would give up but Nixon certainly wasn't.
Putting all blame on to fr*nce for our actions is also a bit of a cope.

As HCM said, sniffing French poo for 5 years is better than Chinese shit forever (referring to being a Chinese vassal for 1000 years). The US and France are a forgotten blip. They despise the Japanese and Chinese more.
