Commonly asked questions - check here before making a question post

If you have a question about the Municipality of Anchorage someone else probably had the same or similar question in the past.

Please use the search function to look through the past question posts before making a post or comment. Many helpful users here have already given great in depth responses to many common questions. If you have a specific question after looking over the previous posts, feel free to post your question here in this thread or make a new post.

Low effort posts that clearly haven't looked through past submissions or can be easily answered by a quick internet search may be removed, a good way to avoid that would be to specify in your post that you have already looked over the sticky and searched online.

Below is a list of direct links to some commonly asked questions. However, even if you do not see your question on the list please take a moment to search before posting. When searching or when using one of the links below you can also change the sort function from top to new to see more recent posts.

Please be kind to people, the search function of reddit is far from perfect. Tourism is valuable to our city and at one point all of us were new to the city or had questions about local services and businesses.

We took a community poll on this rule a year after implementation. Here is a link to the poll and the feedback the community gave.

Lizard stowaway with fern

Post image
22 Upvotes

We bought a fern yesterday from Lowe’s that had a tiny lizard hiding in it. We initially thought it was a gecko but now believe it to be some kind of brown anole. After a tense stand off we convinced him to surrender and get in a small plastic bin. Is there anywhere in Anchorage we can take it? We’re not really lizard people.

Anyone know any contractors/carpenters that would be willing to quote replacing roof fascia boards? I’ve tried the few I know and no one is even willing to come out to look at the job

Title pretty much says it all. I’ve been looking to have this done for a few years now and can’t find a single person willing to consider the job

Seed start soil

Hey Anchorage gardeners, where and what type of soil do you get for your seeds starts? and then follow that up with, for your veggie garden? I usually do flowers by seed, but this is my first go at veggies.

Take action: The new global tariffs announced on April 2 could hit Alaska hard.

We should tell our reps how we feel. Here’s why:

Alaska exported $1.2 billion to China in 2023, half in seafood. China’s 10% tariff on it and recently announced additional sweeping 34% tariff could cut jobs and raise prices.

Border towns like Haines and Skagway depend on Canadian goods. A 25% tariff could increase costs for groceries and $314 million in yearly fuel imports.

Congress, not the President, should set tariffs. Using “emergency powers” for this—linked to fentanyl—feels like executive overreach.

Action: Email Senators Murkowski and Sullivan, and Rep. Begich with your own version or something like this:

Subject: Tariffs Hurt Alaska

Dear [Senator/Representative], The new tariffs threaten our seafood industry, raise border town costs, and sidestep Congress. Please act to protect Alaska’s economy and Constitution. Thanks, [Your Name]

Their contact info is online. It’s quick, and if enough of us speak up, it could matter. How do you anticipate these tariffs hitting your area?

GCI

I shit on GCI with many others, but this time I actually have something nice to say.

Service has been spotty here in S. Anchorage ever since I signed up with them. I don't have good memories of dealing with them when I've been around the state on other contracts. Especially in Nome.

Service went out Sunday. I wasn't off until yesterday. They thought they had it fixed remotely, but it went down again maybe half an hour later. And because we all thought it was fixed, they cancelled the service appointment. Called back, fixed, then went down. Had to schedule service for today, because even though I had it scheduled and the time between fixed and not fixed was so minimal, they tell me "No same day."

Dude comes out today, works methodically, tracing everything. Starts with simple fixes, still sees what I've been seeing, so he kept digging. Turns out it's a bad splitter. He swaps that and next thing I know, I'm banging away on speeds I've never seen before.

Bummer that they can't id things like that remotely.

Sourcing rocks

Is it illegal to pull off on the Seward highway and load up on rocks in any of the many areas you could? And I mean safely pull off not just on the shoulder of the road.

Or any other areas to recommend for sourcing flattish rocks? Think stepping stones.

Trying to diy a backyard project and save some dollars.

Thanks!

How to help stray cats/dogs after mt. Spurr eruption?

There’s around 4-6 stray cats around my neighborhood that are very wary and we have been unable to humanely trap. What are some precautions and preparations I can do and any specific items leave for them if there’s lots of ash-fall after mt. Spurr erupts?
