That's a dragon goby, a really interesting fish. I have one of these guys as pet. They spent most of the day hiding behind rock structures or under the substrate. They are nocturnal. They only come out to eat when there is complete darkness.

Meet Kimyona !!

EDIT : I did some more research and found out the fish in OP's post is actually a worm goby and not a dragon goby, they don't have eyes. I am sorry for spreading misinformation :(

Very beautiful little companion you have there.

How do they know when it's dark...

u/cochlearist 22h ago

They've got really shitty eyes, but can tell light and dark.

This one might have been born with a defect. Most of the pictures I’ve seen of them they have eyes.

All dragon gobies has eyes, it's just that their visions are very poor. They can't see much. Their method of eating is that they gulp a mouthful of gravel and sort out the edible particles from the gravel, after that spit out the gravel. ( yeah, sorry for my English, my sentance making and Grammer is not good)

Edit : it's actually a worm goby, they don't have eyes. Sorry for spreading misinfo :(

u/cochlearist 22h ago

He's probably closing them tight because of all the light.

I came here to ask this!

u/aoi_ito 22h ago

I turn off the lights of his tank...

4

u/Anen-o-me 22h ago

It doesn't have eyes.

3

u/aoi_ito 21h ago

Edit : OP's fish actually a different species from mine. OP's one is a worm goby and mine one is a dragon goby. And yeah, worm gobies don't have eyes. Sorry for spreading mis info :(

not relevant to this example, but some fish have parietal eyes as well. Lamprey have 2!

Love the integrity! And that’s a cool fish, what do they eat?

4

u/aoi_ito 18h ago

Thank you so much !! Oh, he's kind of a picky eater. He used to love eating diced tilapia fillets but now he loves diced prawn and shrimp. If I say his diet in general, I give him Hikari carnivores sinking pellets (for complete nutrition), spirulina and algae wafers( for calcium suppliment and digestive health), cultured blood worms and tubifex worms (he absolutely love them!! ) and shrimps and prawn occasionally(only on weekends). I also give him and my other fishes a day gap, I which I don't give them food to clear /empty their digestive tracts, it prevents from causing internal parasites and bloating.

u/SirMourningstar6six6 18h ago

That’s awesome! How big is the enclosure of you don’t mind my asking. Sorry for all the questions lol

3

u/aoi_ito 18h ago

No it's not a problem, I love answering questions lol . It's a 75 gallon long + shallow tank. In this tank only he and a small synodontis eupterus lives for now. You'll find him behind that big rock at the far behind, he rarely moves around from that spot,it took me a few minute to get that photo of him from the far behind corner. I had to squeeze my hand bettwen that small gap lol. Also I forgot to strim the roots of the floaters (pistae stratiotes), so it makes the tank a little messy at the moment.

u/SirMourningstar6six6 18h ago

So since they don’t move much this is considered a large enclosure? I may be moving soon and may finally be able to afford my hobbies again and o always thought it would be cool to build a big tank that was self sustaining and this fish looks really cool.

There's no such thing as large aquarium, bigger the better. Bigger the aquarium more stable will be the biological environment( stable nitrogen cycle) . small tanks are very hard to maintain on the other hand, they are very unstable in nature, one small mistake, and all your fishes are gone. All it takes a small mistake, like over feeding, over feeding will lead to ammonia spike in your tank boom, the biological equilibrium of your aquarium will crash down. Which will lead to ammonia burn on your fish and ultimately killing them. It can still happen in bigger aquariums but it can be brought to control with some water change and nitrogen cycle starter bacteria. The hobby of aquarium is actually very complex, idk why people take it so casually. They don't even bother doing some research on to give their fish a good life before buying from stores. They don't even know that one should not bring fishes just after setting the tank up. You should give the tank atleast 1 months for the formation of beneficial bacteria which are essential for sustaining life(and to Kick start nitrogen cycle) in the tank. If you want to get a fish tank first pls do all the research before getting one, don't make the mistake of not doing research and getting a fish tank like all the inexperienced fish keepers. It's a hard yet very rewarding hobby, once you got yourself in it you just can't go back lol. I started with 1 tank, now I have 12 haha 🤣

Thank you for the info. I’m definitely not going to rich into it. I just love watching the videos of people building giant vivariums and such. So I’ve been thinking of things I would possibly consider including. I honestly don’t think this would be a good fit for what I’d be looking for. But it’s still really cool. At the moment all I know that I really want to include is some Halloween hissers. So a nocturnal aquatic animal would be great. But I’d definitely get my landscape and plants in first. I didn’t know you should let a tank run for a month before adding animals. I really do appreciate you taking the time to teach me about the goby and the tanks!

It's okay, if you really love watching people make masterpieces with plants, wood rocks etc then r/aquascape would be best for you. People there are very skilled with their work. And you'd also able to learn a lot of new things about keeping fish too. I absolutely love that sub !!

If you were spreading misinformation and not correcting it, you would have a bright future as a Fox News host.😀

That's a beautiful animal you have there. I see some differences between your pet along with similar images online and OPs picture. Are they the same species? Looks like yours has eyes on top..

1

u/aoi_ito 22h ago edited 21h ago

I mean all dragon gobies have eyes relatively on the top of the heads but in my case, it's the bad angle. When I took that Pic, he was slightly slanting toward the rock behind him which made him look like his eyes were on the top of the head lol.

Edit : you are right, OP's fish and mine fish is actually of different species. OP's one is a worm goby and mine is a dragon goby. Sorry I got confused between them two :(

Hey Kimyona :3

thanks for info, OP's beastie looked like a Goa'uld symbiote to me

(parasitic species who burrow themselves into a host's neck, wraps around the spinal column then takes control of their body and mind)
