There isn't a widely accepted short answer. In the humanities, the transition to modernity is often thought to fall around 1500. In the arts (music, literature) there's a notion of "modernism" where the turn is more like 1910 -- but even then, there were outliers and forebears as far back as Turner, Blake, and Goya.
