Did I pay $1500 for oil changes?
I’m going back over my contracts a month later and if I’m not mistaken, I paid almost $1500 for 12 oil changes. It’s a 2022 CX-5. Not sure if they’re more expensive than the $60 I paid for my car..

Where I live, Walmart’s full synthetic is $60. Even Valvoline is $100-105 and they’re the priciest in my city. 😭

You’re paying for the oil and the services/labor. Dealer service is typically going to run you more hence the $125 per visit.
On the bright side I doubt they’re charging you for a full hour of labor. I’ve seen worse

Please, I’m begging you. Don’t take your car to Walmart for an oil change. I knew the district manager for my area personally and that was HIS advice. He wouldn’t take his own vehicles there. You might get a good one every once and a while, but not worth Russian roulette with your car

Where i get my oil changes, it's like 45 bucks, including labor. I did have to like hunt down this shop, though. They are great people, no bs. Cut straight to the point and are an honest family. They do the exact work you ask done. If they see anything more, they'll let you know before you leave, but they won't do the extra work to avoid the extra charge unless you ask them to do it.

Looks like it, yeah. Oil change, tire rotation and inspection every 5 month/ 5k miles until 2/19/30 or 95k miles.

That's not cheap, but you're not getting completely hosed, as long as you actually use the benefit. You paid retail price. No need to pay for oil changes/tire rotations for 5 years or 60k miles. Better not miss one though, then you'll be in the "over paid" territory if you itemized your benefits. Although, I imagine most service drives at the dealer will be willing to work with you, because they get paid when you use it, too.

Think the dealer does a certain amount of checks on others maintenance items (not necessarily fixing) but at least it will be looked at, which I’ve never gotten at any place that does just oil changes, so there’s that bit of value. Things like recalls, excessive brake wear, other fluid checks are mostly overlooked at oil change places

everyone acting outraged about this is out to lunch, there's not a dealership in the country that would charge substantially less than this. the fuckin drive-through places are all $80+ now for non-synthetic. some of the Euro stuff is like $400+ at the dealer.

I don’t think it’s a bad price to pay for a bit extra peace of mind. Some smart ass will probably mention the Magnusson moss act - but if you have a warranty claim and the dealership is where you primarily (and promptly) bring your car for service they will be a lot less likely to give you grief for it… Sometimes they will be more keen to help you.
FWIW - a Subaru oil change (6.x quarts) with tire rotation and multi point inspection is 100~110 through the dealer.

While my truck was under warranty I paid $300/oil change. 12 qt of diesel oil ain’t cheap at the dealer. But they did find a few issues they covered along the way.
But now I do them it’s $100.
What I’m saying is you can kinda see it as an extra insurance policy.

You got fleeced for sure. I started writing out what it would cost to do yourself and even with the purchase of a couple tools and filters, you'd have a hard time breaking $600-700 all-in and the time is fairly negligible.
Rather than poke fun at you, I'd like to encourage you to consider tackling the little jobs like changing oil. It's very easy, doesn't require advanced tools or knowledge, and just about anyone can give you a hand if you're unsure about something. You can also probably easily find someone local to you through reddit or similar to give you a hand and walk you through it in exchange for lunch.
Nice car btw. Mazda makes some really beautiful and unique looking cars nowadays. Mazda and Hyundai also seem to pick some really nice paint colors.

I genuinely appreciate that. I’m here to learn and I usually do so by making mistakes. I do enjoy minor DIYs; definitely gives me a sense of accomplishment so I will see if that is something I can take on.
This is my 3rd Mazda and I love them! I always thought I would stick with a solid black car. Last one was soul red and now this one too. It sure is pretty ☺️

When it doubt for crazy shit like this in 2025, take pictures and ask ChatGPT to tell you if you are being scammed or not or tell you any hidden fees.
I read every terms and service like this now using chatGPT, just take a picture of each page.

You can cancel these types of contracts if you have not used it yet. I’d call or go in to speak with the Finance manager and tell (don’t ask) them you want to cancel. When they ask why tell them it works out to 100 per visit and you can get it done for less than that price. (Or tell them it’s none of their business, you just want to cancel)

I'd get out of this. the oil change interval on the CX5 is 7.5k with 0w20 synthetic. over the course of 60k miles that's only 8 oil changes. If you are going to go synthetic no need to go every 5k like this contract says they will.
you could probably find a local shop (not a dealer) to do the oil change and tire rotations for $100 and possibly build a relationship such that you have someone you can trust when something goes wrong.

Looks like the cx5 schedule calls for a change every 12 months or every 7500 miles. Personally I do believe full synthetic every 5k is the way to go if you’re planning on keeping the car long term. Personally I don’t go with these oil change packages because I can do it much cheaper myself and I’ll know it was done right. However you do want documentation that it was done right and on time if you gave lots of warranty or extended warranty. Therefore this is probably just a good learning lesson for next time.

Whenever oil changes comes up there's always the dude that's like "I can do this in my driveway for $50". And yeah, you we know you could. You're also not paying yourself to do it, nor are you paying yourself to dispose of the used oil and filter. You probably have the tools already (which aren't generally expensive, but you still need them) and you probably have the skill set and space to work on your vehicle.
I just took six quarts in to oreilly. It was free to drop off, but it wasn't free to take there. I wasn't paid to do that. But I still had to. My clumsy ass spilled some in the driveway too, so that took extra time (and money) to clean up properly.
If you ever eat out, grab fast food, pick up a soda at the checkout at the grocery store, etc. you pay for convenience and labor beyond what it would cost you to make/do yourself. That's just the reality of the market. The oil change pricing shared here is pretty on par with market standards.

Hang on. The cx5 maintenance schedule calls for oil changes every 7500 miles. So, a responsible owner would perform 8 oil changes in 60k miles.
1500/8 = $187. So, yeah, priced little high imo. Never get these add on services.

Don't go to a dealership for an oil change. I got a Groupon for Valvoline and paid $27 for full synthetic and paid the extra $10 for an air filter even without the Groupon, it would've been $64.

Look over your contact, is that the only thing that is included is oil changes? I don’t know Mazda but I have worked for Subaru and Audi and both of their maintenance contracts include more than just oil changes. For example an Audi 2.0 will include a cabin air filter every other service, a brake fluid change every 2 years, spark plugs and ATF fluid every fourth service, and an engine air filter every sixth. But even so 125$ an oil change isn’t terrible for dealer work, sure it’s more expensive than jiffy lube but usually you get competent lube techs and a better inspection. And I would like to stress usually, there’s horrible are horrible techs everywhere.

Those service contracts are almost never a good deal, but usually not a terrible deal either. My wife likes having the contract -- she likes knowing that she's not going to pay for any routine service for 5 years.
If you can change the oil yourself, or have a good, reasonably priced mechanic, you're going to spend more money on the service contract than on the oil changes, but if you'd have gone to the dealer anyway, you usually break even.

This also has the Basic box checked at the top of the pic. Basic is likely a Powertrain Warranty. If you paid $1500 for both the maint plan (12 LOF and tire rotations) and the powertrain warranty, it’s not a bad deal. The maint makes up the a significant portion and you’ll want those receipts if you need to use that pwrt warranty.

😊 About a year. They go by mileage is what the dealer of financial said, so I would think they prorate it on the amount of oil changes I’m supposed to already have had up to the 10.8K miles mark. Of course I always either pay out of pocket and got the first oil change free, or do it myself.

You pre-paid for and oil change, tire rotation and inspection every 5 months or 5000 miles.
The raw numbers are in your favor until you factor in interest on the $1495 over the life of the loan.
Be sure to factor in getting the oil and filter, doing the job, recycling the oil. So, there are really 2 questions on the table. Are you handy and can do all of these things? What's your time worth?
Personally, I wouldn't do it but if I lived in an apartment/condo. I'd really consider it.

This is a big yikes if its oil changes only. There is no planet in this solar system where it is a good deal. For synthetic oil you should be getting a good 10,000 miles interval. that makes this $250 an oil change for the equivalent of $50 mobil 1 and the absolute best $15 filter. You should also be doing it yourself on a SUV IMO . refund this ASAP if possible.

It looks like you bought an extended warranty with oil changes thrown in. A basic extended warranty usually covers drivetrain, engine, transmission, and differentials. Basically anything that takes lubricants. Taking them up on the oil changes is a great way to get value back on the money you spent. Mazdas tend to be pretty reliable, so you aren’t likely to run into the kind of trouble covered under your warranty before 95,000 miles.

Are you going to a dealer? I ask because my buddies dad used to own a shop and I would pay 35 to 45 for an oil change. They didn't make money on oil changes but it got people in their shop and led to bigger jobs and repeat customers.

It’s pretty clear by reading it that you’ve got oil changes, tire rotation every 5k miles or 5 years. It expires 5years or 60,000 from now. You didn’t include pages 3-6 so there’s possibly more but we cannot see it. So basically 15 “free” oil changes and tire rotations which works out to be $100 per visit to break even. You’ve also probably rolled this into your monthly payment so you’re also paying interest on it. Also if you sell your car sooner or it gets totaled you have lost out on whatever didn’t get used. Lastly, the shop you take it to if it isn’t your selling dealer may not accept this contract or want to bother to call this in for payment as it is a pain in the ass to do so. Source: I was a service advisor for many years.

It looks like it comes with air filters and cabin filters too looking at that bottom right paragraph. That would honestly make it a pretty good deal. You get your oil change and tire rotations along with filters, so instead of 125ish for oil changes, it would be like 70-90ish for the oil change plus the cost of filters and labor to install them.
Also, the inspections are a decent touch. Should you have issues while under warranty, they would be likely to catch it and you could get it handled while you have coverage.

Yeah synthetic oil changes are expensive. I pay this much when I don't change the oil myself.
A lot of the quick lube places have pretty big coupons, if I am not changing my oil I find a coupon to a place I haven't been to recently( I think there is a limit on how many coupons you can use in a timeframe) and do that.
here is 50% off conventional oil change and 25$ synthetic at jiffy lube.

You could just do it yourself, it’s a Phillips head to move a plastic cover, a ratchet with 8mm hex head for the drain bolt, oil pan, block of some sort and a filter wrench. So 30 bucks in tools, one of which you should already have. Your first oil change will pay for itself.

You paid up front and missed out on the time value of money for something that you could have paid for as needed. Really for no benefit. I’d avoid doing this sort of thing in the future. There’s a reason they offer this kind of stuff… it’s free money for them. Also, odds are most people don’t use all the scheduled oil changes.

It's a standard contact. You get an oil change every 3 months regardless of miles since you're covered for 60k miles. You got a deal here. Could be as little as 12 changes, or it could take a lifetime to get to 95k.

5qt Mobile 1 synthetic is about $30, Fram filter about $10. After tax $45 for all parts. I bring my oil & filter to my mechanic and he charges $25 labor (used to be just $15 a few years back). But $45 + $25 = $70 per oil change. And that's with my choices of oil and filter. Don't get a choice of what is used on/in your car if you just let a shop use their parts (although a dealer should use OEM filter and good oil). But yeah, that's a ripoff. They got you to prepay way too much. When buying a car, buy the car ONLY. Never get any ads ons, they are all scams. Never get extended warranties (if you really want one, you can get one yourself after purchase from another company).

I’m wondering where people are seeing this is only for 12 oil changes. On the paper where it says “maintenance service interval” it has a checkmark on 3, which would presumably mean every 3,000 miles. If that is correct then op would have 20 oil changes under this contract and each one would average out to $74.25.

If this is only for oil changes, then this is very expensive. Since manufacturers recommend oil changes only every 10k miles then you will only be getting 6 oil changes. When you buy new tires, the rotation and balance are typically included in the price. Make sure you can actually get 5k oil changes but I think this is still a really bad deal.
These maintenance contract deals are always in favor of the company.

Looks to be 20 oil changes to me… if the interval is 3… assuming that’s 3k miles… you’ve got 60k miles on the term of the contract… so that would mean an oil change every 3k miles until you hit 60k that YOU hv driven … which would be 60k/3k… which would equal 20 changes

Everyone's math here has me baffled. This is EITHER a 60,000 mile contract, meaning 20 changes at $75.. or it runs UNTIL 60k, which means it's 8 changes at $180... Either way, unless you drive a LOT, you're gonna run into the 60 months first.. so BEST case scenario, you're paying $75/change which isn't all that bad to have someone else do it (not GREAT deal) or worst case $200+ which sucks. And KNOW that the dealer is going to "find" everything that's "wrong" with the car EVERY time, and charge you $3500 for a brake job.
That being said, if you can't do your own changes... probably marginally safer than going to a quick lube and having them forget to put.. oh, I dunno.. oil... in the car, or leaving 7/12 screws out of the pan underneath the car which will fly off next winter.
Seeing shit like this is why I do all my own work.

Everyone here is speculating on the pricing. If you bought this from a Mazda dealer go to their service department and ask a service advisor for the breakdown of service costs and if this would cover those. Since you added this to your loan as well I would make extra payments asap to pay that amount off.
Based on verbiage in section 5, they may not even cover the full cost of the service that the dealer charges.

The fine print seems to indicate that tire rotations and multi point inspections are also included in the maintenance services covered. Those things also cost money.
For somebody who doesn't know shit about working on cars, paying $125 every 3-5 months for somebody to change the most important fluid in your engine, loosen and tighten the most important bolt on your engine, and rotate your tires while they're at it, ain't that bad of a deal.

Is this saying every 3 mo you get an oil change? If so, 80$ for full synthetic is pretty average here bbut you can do better

You're buying convenience and peace of mind. I could tell you many horror stories about Jiffy Lube and other such places. Just make an appointment every 5k to get your service done.

0-20 oil changes are routinely 75 bucks at valvoline. In and out in 20 min tops. Cheaper if you do it yourself. Paying a premium is the norm at dealers so yeah its overpriced but that is dealerships going rates. I have seen worse. My moms volvo dealer tried to charger her 250 once. My father yelled over the phone tell them to take the oil out lol. Its not terrible if convenient but you can do much better.

that's $125 per oil change. The CX-5 takes 4.5 quarts of 0w20 oil. That means you'd probably be buying 5 quarts and spending $45 on oil. A filter is around $12 as well. That means you're paying around $70 in labor for both the oil change and disposal of the old oil, which is pretty reasonable, all things considered. I wouldn't stress over it.
