Help Best race for cleric/mage multi class?

Pretty much just what the title says, just looking for some input by people smarter than me.

Edit: I think I'm going with duergar, I was already leaning towards them but it was suggested by a few people as well. Thanks for all your help.

Also, is either class better to start with? i.e. cleric/mage or mage/cleric or does it not matter?

What cleric subclass? Githyanki would be good for the proficiencies if you don’t pick a cleric subclass that gives them

I was wanting to do something with necromancy, so some kind of unholy cleric mage thing. Was leaning towards underdark races, to add flavor

duergar are top tier and feels pretty fitting for your character concept

I was leaning hard towards duergar, so I think I'm gonna do that

Drow or Duergar would fit that nicely. Drow fits better lore wise since it's the only under race that classically has clerics and wizards.

It doesn't really matter which race you choose, it depends on the backstory you've created for your character

Gnome of halfling with a 2H weapon will never not be funny.

Now I need to make a halfling monk to throw people around. I think I'll make him a Durge.

I'd personally start with cleric. They have better survivability early game and you'll start with better armour/weapon proficiencies.

Any of them are fine tbh. The bonuses are relatively small.

Clerics get medium armor and shield proficiency as a class feature, so assuming OP starts cleric and then dips to another caster this is irrelevant

The class you start with has tradeoffs. Starting with cleric gives you better armor and weapon choices (depending which subclass) and does probably have better early survivability. But depending on your party, mages hide in back.

When you say mage, do you mean sorcerer or wizard? If you take sorcerer first, you will get proficiency in Constitution. This will make it easier to maintain concentration on spells like haste and Spirit Guardian. Taking cleric gives wisdom, which can be useful, but I would rather have Con for concentration. If going Wizard, I would go Cleric first.

If you go Duergar you already have medium armor. If you go Sorcerer at level 1, you could also still get medium armor proficiency I believe by choosing Tempest cleric or heavy by choosing War cleric. You get to level 2 quickly. Having one level in each is not bad.

The rules are weird. You don't get armor proficiency from a multi class from the main class like fighter, but you do from a subclass like war cleric, I believe.
