Funnily enough there are some villages in South America?, Africa? (I'd have to look it up again), that kind of keep saltwater males as pets. They feed them regularly and interact with them to an extent. This allows them to keep a healthy male that will fight off others from coming near the village, therein keeping everyone safe from crocodiles by semi- keeping one as a pet.
American crocodiles are only found in saltwater dominate and brackish waters. Alligators primarily reside in freshwater habitats but are commonly found in brackish areas as well, and sometimes salt water. Just the other day I saw an alligator swimming in the ocean here in Florida while I was on my morning run.

Things I wouldn't dare with a saltwater crocodile.
