It's my dog's 18th birthday today.. He's going to the vet every 3-4 months or when we think he's in pain.
Walks are short, but he's still got the hipity hop moments & loves the snacks + cuddles.
I am telling myself I'm ready, but I know I won't be.79

They’re very lucky to have you. Give them extra scritches for me tonight.

u/FixTheWisz Jan 18 '25
18!? It takes real love from both of you to make it that far. Glad to hear he’s still got his pup mindset.

Labrella made a big difference in my older guy’s life and gave us an extra year. It might help your guy.

Regardless of speed, it's still a display of a well trained dog to follow the mildly complicated instructions through the course. Definitely a good dog.

u/Johannes_Keppler Jan 18 '25
Most dogs that are used to doing these obstacle courses absolutely love doing them as long as their bodies will carry them!

Old dogs rule.

u/Stretch_Riprock Jan 18 '25
Our old lady can't control her bladder anymore... But we still love her and adapt to make her comfortable. I agree. Old dogs are very cool.

u/rumplydiagram Jan 18 '25
We've got a 16 yr old boxer/dalmatian mix... still spry as can be... but I know we're on borrowed time .

u/Difficult-Thanks-730 Jan 18 '25
My pittie/lab mix lived until 17. She was perfectly fine, still running and playing until the last week of her life. I couldn’t have hoped for better golden years for her. I hope you get the same!

u/rumplydiagram Jan 18 '25
I hope that's how it goes .. I spent an entire tax return when she was 2 because our lawnmower must've smelled tasty ... she chew a perfect fine lawn boy up and got some plastic in her tummy... I haven't spent a dime on my health in 20 years.

you better have given her all the treats and all the snuggles humanly possible...
she looks like me crawling into my truck on a cold monday morning at 6am and still trying to be cheerful.
2
u/wirefox1 Jan 18 '25
Aw. I had a friend who's father owned a towing company on our river. Every morning at 6:30 he left for work with his lab in the back of the truck. After years of this, the man developed Alzheimer's and died.
My friend said for months afterwards the lab would jump into the back of his truck at 6: 30, and stayed there until they had to drag him out. sniff.

u/DJSugarSnatch Jan 18 '25
I have personal stories as well, but the one that really sticks with me is the Shibi in Japan that would sit at the train stop for its owner, which also got shine from Future-rama and Fry's Dog...
Dogs are creatures of Habit... much like us. We need that habit to keep going.

That’s the 4” height, about as low as it gets without the pole actually laying on the ground.

If only they lived longer 😔
7
u/Yajahyaya Jan 18 '25
Yes. One time when we had to put one of our dogs down the vet said to me, “we just live longer than they do”. I don’t know why, but it was comforting to hear.
5
u/Soloflow786 Jan 18 '25
I'm sorry to hear that. Your vet is correct. Animals are better than humans. Hope you have a great weekend!

This is really nice, but do we have to pretend it's amazing to appreciate that? /r/mademesmile seems more appropriate.

I can't see a wiener dog without hearing it sound like someone who went to jail or camp, saved christmas or was scared stupid.

Strong and steady wins the race! Keep on pushing thru, little nugget. Soft cuteness aggression (because you’re older) of snuggles, kisses, ear and belly scritches,, PG-above-the-butt tail scritches, and anything else you want.

u/Wicked_Fabala Jan 18 '25
Shes the doggy version of that grandma that wanted to be arrested just grinning in handcuffs! 🥹
