CONTROL YOURSELF.

TAKE ONLY WHAT YOU NEED FROM IT.

Was etched into my heart the moment I first heard this song.

A baby is born, crying out for attention. We like to watch youuuu laughing.

This song means so much to me. It was like the anthem when I met and fell in love with my now wife. It came on in the car the other day and my now 3 young kids were jamming to it and those words just hit me. This song brings lots of feels for me.

u/KnewAllTheWords Jan 23 '25 edited Jan 24 '25

This song was seriously the only thing that would get my baby son to stop crying when he was 1. It'd put it on and he'd just stare, hypnotized at the speaker... So id play it on repeat all night for him while he slept. Needless to say i'm overwhelmed by feels every time it comes on

12

u/geb_bce Jan 24 '25

Haha, when my now 16 yr old was a baby the only thing that would calm her down was the sound of Gordon Ramsey yelling at people on Hell's Kitchen. 🤣

11

u/Ioaskaaaa Jan 24 '25

Her first words were, DONKEY.

u/jeroboamj Jan 24 '25 edited Jan 24 '25

When my son who's now 9 first saw this video he was maybe 3 or 4. I think his big sister had it going, herself barely 10, he would talk about it all the time and request it. He even tried explaining the video to a neighborhood kids mom and we were all "uuuh yeah he saw the video accidentally- "and she was younger herself and was like, " oh yeah, my kid is obsessed with it too" Sometimes it pops up and he responds to it fondly

My brother was paralyzed when this song came out.... 22 years ago. I called him while he was in the hospital to listen to it. I cried this morning when it popped up on the thread. Fuck time Flys. I remember getting the call he was in an accident like it was yesterday. Great track.

3

u/Stick19 Jan 24 '25

It's crazy how just hearing a song will transport you back to a specific place in time.

I hope your brother and family are all doing as well as they can be.

1

u/slugvegas Jan 24 '25

Man crazy how music can just transport you somewhere. How this transported us both back, different places, but it brings back the thoughts and emotions from the time.

Electric feels?

2

u/slugvegas Jan 23 '25

Kids, but I love that whole album as well as Congratulations

Edit I’m a dumbass I got that right after I replied lmao it shocks me like an electric eel

1

u/Gtoasterboy Jan 24 '25

Don't let them watch the music video lol

1

u/hohenheim420 Jan 24 '25

this video brings up lots of feels for me.

if you like this song you might like the Xaphoon Jones - Bob Marley x MGMT remix, if you like Bob Marley that is.

https://youtu.be/41gnG5rYqk8?si=YrD2nwZd2EVgDKE8

that song always makes me feel big time stuffs

1

u/EmploymentPutrid4649 Jan 25 '25

Some would say they bring electric feels

1

u/sonny894 Jan 27 '25

It's wild how the same song can be extremely emotional for people for different reasons. For me this evokes memories of when I moved to NYC in 2008 which was exciting but my ex-wife introduced me to the song, and it reminds me of both the fun times and the pain of divorce.

u/SuckMyB-3Unit Jan 23 '25

Boomers coulda used this song.

u/LiberacesWraith Jan 23 '25

Lead poisoning adds 85% resistance to self reflection.

3

u/psychedelicpiper67 Jan 24 '25

Someone has never heard “In My Life” by The Beatles. Sad.

1

u/jmhobrien Jan 24 '25

Boomers, apparently.

1

u/A_Good_Boy94 Jan 25 '25

They had a lot of good music and a lot of decades to pick it up from the collective psyche of artists. They just chose not to retain any of it. The ME generation, the cocaine generation.

2

u/bulbous_bean Jan 24 '25

Have a source for that? I’d be fascinated to read it. Or am I an idiot and this is a joke?

1

u/bulbous_bean Jan 25 '25

Wow! Thank you!

2

u/visitprattville Jan 24 '25

No, this claim is not based in scientific fact. Lead poisoning can cause a variety of neurological and psychological effects, including impaired cognitive function, reduced impulse control, and difficulty with decision-making. However, the idea of “85% resistance to self-reflection” is not a recognized or measurable concept in medical or psychological research.

Lead toxicity primarily affects brain development in children and cognitive functions in adults, but the impacts are not quantified in such a specific manner. If you’d like, I can provide more detailed information about the effects of lead poisoning.

1

u/jonny32392 Jan 26 '25

No that’s fine thanks. You’ve already sucked all the fun outta the room.

11

u/Eggmodo Jan 23 '25

You know the Boomers had Dylan right?

6

u/Ricepudding1044 Jan 24 '25

The boomers had the whole fucking 1970’s which was probably one of the most creative years for inspirational music.

6

u/USMCUSNA1983 Jan 24 '25

You know they think all boomers are putrid losers that greedily destroyed their futures right. According to my kid.

0

u/DuRay69 Jan 24 '25

there are a lot of gems, but there are also alot of vocally unapologetic assholes. Idk which there is more of, but there is definitely more noise coming from the assholes.

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '25

0

u/Eggmodo Jan 23 '25

Yes the famously unpopular and unknown Bob Dylan, listened by no one.

1

u/danyukhin 19d ago

didn't dylan kinda sell out at some point?

11

u/buggsy41 Jan 23 '25

I guess you missed all the protests that Boomers did back in the 60's/70's. Hey, here's a nickel to go buy a clue that yours is not the first generation to have social/cultural/political and nature awareness.

3

u/p8nt_junkie Jan 24 '25

Narcissists, the lot of them

Oh wow! That's an amazing sub! Everyone should check it out..../s (Do Not Click That Link...you've been warned)

1

u/AndrewMac3000 Jan 24 '25

Goddamn you weren’t kidding! I should have listened and stayed away… now those images have been burnt into my memory Lol

2

u/ColoradoWeasel Jan 23 '25

Ok. I’ll bite. Gen X here. Who is this and what is the song?

3

u/nightcayman Jan 24 '25

“Kids” by MGMT.

From one Gen-Xer to another.

My first kid was almost three when this came out and my second was a year away.

1

u/ColoradoWeasel Jan 24 '25

Sadly, I’ve never heard of either.

1

u/USMCUSNA1983 Jan 24 '25

Some of us listened with content. Don’t be so hard on us. Not all are greedy fuck faces. I give tens of thousands a year to my church. Why? Because they give it back to the community. And the community deserves it.

1

u/SuckMyB-3Unit Jan 25 '25

Weird flex, but okay.

1

u/Meltedwhisky Jan 27 '25

They had Bob Dylan

u/Correct_Suspect4821 Jan 23 '25

Blaming boomers for everything, such a millennial thing

29

u/rufusbot Jan 23 '25

You're right let's blame gen alpha 🙃

26

u/Davistele Jan 23 '25

Phew… Once again everyone forgot about GenX! My time for blame will come, one day.

13

u/rufusbot Jan 23 '25

Gen Who? Sorry, you're not on the list.

5

u/adrenalinda75 Jan 23 '25

Yeah, I will celebrate this comment with Rush's Subdivisions! We will be the dirt under the fingernails soon enough.

6

u/iCantLogOut2 Jan 23 '25

Forgotten as kids .... Forgotten as adults. 😂 Y'all really are the middle child.

5

u/stue0064 Jan 23 '25

People act like everyone of a generation did anything. Look at every other generation that can’t do anything. The system is against us and always has been.

3

u/Jlt42000 Jan 23 '25

It’s a fair assessment. Reaganomics has got us here.

1

u/Double-Risky Jan 23 '25

Feel free to stop

7

u/alittlestisious Jan 23 '25

Wait what, it's not "Enjoy yourself"!?

1

u/HornyAIBot Jan 23 '25

You Enjoy Myself

1

u/MoistStub Jan 24 '25

My you joy enself

55

u/Complex-Situation Jan 23 '25 edited Jan 23 '25

They tortured that poor toddler in the kids video. Just nuts.

Edit: spelling

29

u/PirateMore8410 Jan 23 '25

No they didn't. Watch the making of it video. The kid is laughing and playing with the monsters. The parts of him crying is just from him getting fussy during filming. They introduce him to all of it way before they start filming. They also took breaks when he would start to get upset.

Idk where all this made up stuff comes from when there's been a making of video on YouTube for 15 years.

19

u/shamoomoofartpoopoo Jan 23 '25

Need to do a “where are they now” on that poor soul.

6

u/CranberryEmotional35 Jan 23 '25

I remember something about them using a blind baby that couldn't see the monsters, but I don't know if that's fact.

5

u/bencit28 Jan 23 '25

Saw a pic of him recently hanging at a pool party with the Nirvana album cover kid.

4

u/lochonx7 Jan 23 '25

yea that was fuked honestly lol

6

u/No_Combination_9087 Jan 23 '25

Oh shit, 20 years later and I just realized that line is about The Giving Tree.

5

u/MememeSama Jan 23 '25

I never understand lyrics. I always wondered take from what? English is hard..

2

u/Fantasykyle99 Jan 24 '25

Just don’t be greedy, take what you need

1

u/thisbenzenering Jan 23 '25

it

such a pain in all our asses. Feel free to understand it as anything you want unless the speaker is clear about what it is

4

u/linuscarlson89 Jan 23 '25

Tf is wrong with me. I've always heard "show yourself, take only what you need from me" . Thanks for letting me know

8

u/ashleyorelse Jan 23 '25

Today is the first time that I know of that I've ever heard this song. Wow.

0

u/MoistStub Jan 24 '25

Genuinely asking- how old are you? I'm 29 and everyone I have ever met plus or minus 10 years has heard this like a billion times lol.

0

u/ashleyorelse Jan 24 '25

I was in my 20s when this came out and big into music. I know all the popular songs from that time...and this wasn't one of them. The charts and airplay information back it up.

The people you know aren't everyone. Plenty of people on this thread alone have said they've never heard it.

3

u/BrownShoesGreenCoat Jan 23 '25

Shit. Until this moment I was sure it was “Enjoy yourself”…

My life was a lie

2

u/LePetitRenardRoux Jan 23 '25

Same same. It’s been a mantra of mine since.

2

u/Hyperion_47 Jan 23 '25

Omfg, all this time I thought the lyrics went "ENJOY yourself. Take only what you need from it" As in, have fun but only take what's needed. This softa the song quite a bit. Still legendary and very cool to see this early performance!

2

u/Herknificent Jan 23 '25

It’s a good message that people these days should pay heed to.

2

u/Throooowaway999lolz Jan 23 '25

I love this song sm Im 17 and it’s stuck with me the moment I heard it for the first time 😭😭😭

1

u/Mysterious-Primary-6 Jan 23 '25

Right but what the fuck does the next line mean

4

u/JohnnyKarateOfficial Jan 23 '25

No one knows what it means but it’s provocative.

1

u/bjbark Jan 24 '25

It gets the people going

1

u/Recreant793 Jan 23 '25

As an addict, that line really resonates with me and makes me ask myself “Dude, what the hell are you doing?” ☹️

1

u/Fantasykyle99 Jan 24 '25

Hey, I’m a recovering addict/alcoholic and if it were that easy for people like us to moderate that would be great, you like most all addicts know this but it does not matter. We have a condition that overrides any rational thought and we instead gradually rationalize our ever increasing insane behavior which eventually results in our substance of choice being all we really have left.

This song has always meant a lot to me too. When I was in the worst of my addiction I would hear that line and think exactly what you are thinking here, and hate myself for it. But honestly I didn’t have control over my brain, and it’s amazing how much I love myself today! Sorry for dumping all of this randomly this song just gets me beyond emotional lol.

1

u/Recreant793 Jan 24 '25

No, it really means a lot to know I’m not alone. I mean, I know I’m not alone, and that there are millions of people in the same predicament…but specifically with the lyrics and everything. It’s just nice. So thank you. And it did the same thing to me. Literally had tears running down my face because it’s just so beautiful and relatable.

1

u/FrankFrankly711 Jan 23 '25

And here I was singing “Enjoy Yourself!”

1

u/ChebsGold Jan 23 '25

Stop it.

You have just made me realise for like 15 years I have been singing…

“Enjoy yourself, take only what you need from me”

I don’t know how to feel.

1

u/OkAdvice3372 Jan 23 '25

I have been living in a lie. I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THEY SAID ENJOY YOURSELF. I THOUGHT THEY WANTED US TO ENJOY OURSELVES!

1

u/CuTe_M0nitor Jan 24 '25

What does it mean?

1

u/EnsignAwesome Jan 24 '25

Huh, I thought it was "enjoy yourself" which I like better

1

u/CraftyKuko Jan 24 '25

Oh god, all these years, I thought the lyrics were "Enjoy yourself, take only what you need from it". 😳

1

u/rnavstar Jan 24 '25

Damm, I always thought he was saying “enjoy yourself, take only what you need from it.”

1

u/drsteve103 Jan 24 '25

I always thought Electric Feel’s chorus said “SHACKING UP WITH (an) ELECTRIC EEL”

1

u/BodyDisastrous5859 Jan 25 '25

I understood "Enjoy yourself, take only what you need from it"

1

u/hiyathea Jan 25 '25

This song was made to make fun of pop music, dingbat
