Main complaints seem to be that it's a huge tripping hazard. It takes up a lot of space and is very hard to repurpose towards anything else. Often have trouble finding furniture that will fit in it. And it turns out when people get together for parties, a lot of the time is spent doing planned activities (cooking, eating, watching the game, playing games, etc) which means even when you are in perfect situation to use it, it still only sees a little use. If you live in a mansion, this is not a problem, but people tried to add them to smaller living spaces and many ended up getting filled in pretty quickly.
Also I cannot emphasize enough the tripping hazard. People do not expect a drop off in the middle of the room add in low light and being a little bit tipsy. And then the lawsuits begin.
