You do not want to wear a life jacket in the surf because it means you cannot dive under a big wave.

u/HommeMusical 14d ago

Taking this kid into big waves is also counterindicated.

u/ManufacturerNo9649 14d ago

I doubt the kid was ever going to do that!

Kids dad is a pro surfer, pretty sure that would be one of the first things they were taught. Easiest way to avoid a breaking wave is to go right into/under it.

Based on what exactly?

r/confidentlyincorrect corpulent couch-clinger strikes again

The dude is a professional surfer and there are lifeguards and the kid can likely swim by this age as he grew up in the ocean with his surfer dad. Calm down.

Agreed. The kid is fine out there. I've been a surfer since I was a very young kid. These comments are insufferable.

Experts die all the time

11

u/LearniestLearner 14d ago

Drivers die all the time, don’t drive.

I snowboard double blacks almost daily brother

10

u/LED_oneshot 14d ago

Why can’t you just enjoy the video and the moment?

4

u/OrneryAttorney7508 14d ago

How else will they prove how smart they are and how dumb everyone else is?

5

u/turtledancers 14d ago

Why is there a section for discussion?

3

u/ShustOne 14d ago

Because commenters here like to make judgements to show they are right.

13

u/OstentatiousSock 14d ago

Yes, they do. But this is a small wave, with a professional surfer, surrounded by other surfers, with lifeguards, and someone watching closely(whoever is recording). It really doesn’t get much safer than that.

He had zero control of his kid. A small error and kid is in the wave and dad plus board moving away. Ocean lifeguards a long way from that wave. The ocean is unforgiving

20

u/flechette 14d ago

Holy shit what do you mean zero control? He literally transfered the kid from his back to the board and helped him keep his balance WHILE SURFING.

-7

u/leftypoolrat 14d ago

After riding the first part of the wave. If he’d wiped out there’s no way he could’ve grabbed the kid. Kid would’ve been 10’ away in a split second probably tumbling under water

Typical Redditors acting like they know better than literal professionals.

-5

u/leftypoolrat 14d ago

Typical redditor assuming the experienced open water swimmer and former lifeguard knows nothing about ocean risk

10

u/ShustOne 14d ago

He looked like he was in complete control...

4

u/No-Comfortable9480 14d ago

Says the redditor with zero ocean experience

-1

u/leftypoolrat 14d ago

lol I compete in ocean swims all the time

3

u/No-Comfortable9480 14d ago

My apologies good sir

In this thread, Redditors once again insist that any activity that brings joy and excitement is too dangerous to contemplate. Everyone should just stay locked up in their dark rooms to avoid any possible risk and spend their time arguing with people on the internet, like them.

-3

u/leftypoolrat 14d ago

Yeah, I’ve done some reasonably dangerous ocean swims in my day. Not speaking from ignorance. That dude was taking big risk with his kid. The ocean is an unforgiving bitch

3

u/LearniestLearner 14d ago

There’s a difference between fail safe vs safe fail.

Nothing is fail safe, no matter how much you try, there’s always a numbnut to point out a flaw.

You approach life with a safe fail mindset. Or else, why bother doing things like driving because drivers die all the time.

The kid falling off is a safe fail, he wouldn’t have gotten anything serious to happen.

4

u/Bigshmmoodd 14d ago

Have you ever surfed? That wave is pretty small and Kids play in waves all the time.

4

u/leftypoolrat 14d ago

I’m a very experienced open water swimmer. That wave was initially 5’ easily

7

u/ShustOne 14d ago

At that age I knew how to swim in surf, maybe the kid knows as well?

6

u/nabuhabu 14d ago

Lol, not 5’ by any measure. Obviously not the first rodeo for the kid. Obviously a dad with professional level expertise. There’s people everywhere paying attention to the kid - no one nearby would let that kid disappear if he fell off the board. And kids can easily be competent enough to swim safely for a short period at this age if they’re raised in this environment.

Are there some risks? Sure, but it’s not extremely dangerous

3

u/leftypoolrat 14d ago

The initial wave was taller than the dad. I don’t see where you get “professional” experience (especially with your assertion that the waves are easy).

Kid should’ve had a life vest

2

u/nabuhabu 14d ago

Nope, the initial swell looks high because of the camera angle and zoom effect only. The dude is competent enough to manage this safely, which is the only criteria that matters.

Kid didn’t need a life vest

u/openminded44 14d ago

If you never leave your house you are less likely to die.

3

u/utterbbq2 14d ago

I bet you are an expert on this kid and dads previous experience in the ocean.

So if the kid gets tossed off and buried under a wave he won’t drown.

6

u/Donequis 14d ago

They have arm bands and stuff you can wear that when activated help you float, but have a low profile otherwise.

They're really nice and have helped more people avoid drowning at sea :)

-2

u/TheGreatLiberalGod 14d ago

I'm the same. I couldn't help but think he wasn't holding onto kiddo and what if he fell, hit his head on the board.... Ugh.

6

u/thecallofpan 14d ago

Sponge topped board, surrounded by people surfing/helping, and a professional surfer. Most likely, you are more likely to drown or be injured(without the kid) trying this than that child is. Bet he will be a ripper one day!

-13

u/openminded44 14d ago

You don’t learn to surf by being scared. Enough of this protectionism crap.

12

u/Donequis 14d ago

How is having an emergency safety item on hand being scared?

10

u/IAmRules 14d ago

I also dislike over protective attitudes now a days. And I’m sure he wouldn’t take a kid that can’t swim out there but the ocean is deep, I feel like a vest is a small but worthwhile investment.

-1

u/openminded44 14d ago

You just assumed that kid can’t swim. Deep? You can drown in 6” of water.
