Brianne is depicted as hella-ugly in the books. Gwendolyn Christie is anything but ugly.

They did a great job of making a beautiful woman look homely as hell for the show. And she did a great job not-being-pretty - sinking her chin in for turkey neck, gruff tone of voice. I always pictured book-Brienne to be a worn saddle looking lady.  Gwendolyn got as close as she could.

Agree completely. I’d only seen her on the show, so I was pretty knocked over the first time I ever saw her doing a civilian interview.

She and Dinklage as Tyrion got the “Hollywood Homely” treatment — give a bad haircut or a small scar to an otherwise objectively beautiful person and act like they’re hideous in-universe.

Yeah Tyrion in the books is described as almost an abomination, then later picks up a battle wound that disfigures him horrifically. In the shows he starts off as "smouldering" then picks up a battle wound and becomes "smouldering with a scar".

Fr, in the books he pretty much gets his entire nose cut off in the Battle of the Blackwater, in the show he just gets a sexy scar across his face. Though I assume at least part of the reason for them changing it is because the prosthetics/CG would be more trouble than it's worth.

"smouldering with a scar"

This just made me think of Jeremy Irons's Scar from The Lion King.

Honstly, I it is more powerful that he gets treated like shit because he has dwarfism and his mother died giving birth to him. The public prejudice exists from gossip, and the hate of his father from mourning for his wife.

When they’re both as hot as they are, you can only tone them down so much.

Tyrion, Arya Ramsey,, and Jorah were also described as ugly in the books for various reasons and casted by good looking people.

Arya is not described like tyrion and jorah

"Your sister used to call you Arya Horseface."

“Hodor!” Sansa yelled. “You ought to marry Hodor, you’re just like him, stupid and hairy and ugly!”

''Jeyne used to call her Arya Horseface, and neigh whenever she came near.''

Children calling other children ugly doesn't make it true. Kids are just shitty to each other.

Almost like sisters, and siblings in general, will be asses to each other just to be asses. And Sansa was described as kind of always being a bitch to Arya.

Also it would be a bit harsh to tell a 10 year old girl "you're perfect for the role because you're hideous!"

She’s called beautiful too. With tyrion and jorah there is no disparity

Arya is an 'ugly duckling' who begins to grow into her beauty as the story progresses. Bran sees Lyanna as a girl and mistakes her for Arya at first suggesting that like her aunt so will become a great beauty. The 'Kindly Man' also suggests that a grown Arya with her intelligence and beauty could become a courtesan of great influence.

The only characters that call her ugly are 2 pre-teen girls.

Especially since they are girls that have a certain idea of being lady like and Arya did not fit that role.

Arya Ramsey…?

Imagine a , betwixt the two

Just a fact of Hollywood.

2

Although it's unclear how much that is simply because of her height and build, and that she dresses and acts masculine.

Is it like even allowed anymore to specifically cast somebody as ugly? I feel like that would cause an unfathomable amount of problems in the public eye.

For real. The makeup and wardrobe department did a great job at making her look hella average.

No worries, the casting choices from The Witcher more than compensate for Game of Thrones.

Her acting has limits.
