European Product The keyboard producing company "Cherry" is from Germany

Post image

Today, to replace my old, cheap and worn-out keyboard, I bought a new, high-quality one from Cherry, because I found out through previous research that it is a German and therefore European company. Although Cherry was founded in the USA in 1953 by Walter L. Cherry, the company and brand have undergone a number of changes and is now a purely German one that no longer has any links to the USA. Some of the production even takes place in Germany, some in China though.

About my purchase: the quality is really good, as far as I can tell after a few hours of use. The casing is made of aluminium and the keyboard makes a stable impression overall. It will certainly last through some tough gaming evenings.

I've used them. Great mechanical keyboards but I can't afford the shipping costs from DE.

Are they not sold locally?

The cheap, basic, membrane-based Cherry is sold everywhere.

The good stuff.... can be pretty hard to get. I have a few, and it was mostly luck that I got them

As the other commenter said... the good stuff can be harder to find retail. But right now it's not an immediate need. I love the Cherry but my current Steelseries may outlive me.

😂 SteelSeries also delivers very high quality, that’s true! It is also a European company, namely from Denmark. One can perhaps raise concerns because they received investments from the USA in 2012, which is why they may still have to pay out commissions/profits to the investors at that time. Unfortunately, I can’t find anything more detailed. In any case, don’t throw away your SteelSeries products because they still work. That would be a waste of resources.

Isnt Steelseries danish? So no problem on that front

It is sad that shipping costs within the EU are this high

I still use a Cherry G80-3000 keyboard with MX black switches I bought in 1996 as my daily. Close to 30 years old now, still works.

And lately I found out that they still make this model and bought another one. It's now USB, but came with a passive PS/2 adapter (tested, works), so it can still be used on a PS/2 port.

They also make mice that are USB, but can be used on PS/2 with the included adapter.

If you want European keyboards, I think Wooting is a good one as well. It's based in the NL and the quality is amazing. Biggest difference is that wooting does Hall-Effect keyboards, which is another step up in a way (it's basically analog key input).

Logitech is European and they have a LOT of keyboards.

Their mouse is good also.

2

u/Aggravating-Roof-666 1d ago

Are their mice made in Germany?

3

u/iP0dKiller 1d ago

I actually don’t know; their website doesn’t clearly state with item is produced where, therefore I assume every product is partially produced in China and Germany. I might be wrong though.

3

u/Aggravating-Roof-666 1d ago

I think they merged with Xtrfy which makes their mice in China.

I see!

The one I have is made in China.

I that will be my next purchase when my current mouse dies.

Nice. Their keys are essential.

u/tTensai 1d ago

Switches, not keys. But yeah, they are still the best switches I've tried, by far

Best keyboards in the world.

My cherry keyboard was the best choice for a keyboard I've ever made some years ago.

3

u/Fussel2107 1d ago

Damn good keyboards, too. They basically invented the mechanical keyboard switch used in gaming keyboards now.

Highly recommended. Mechanical keys. In private, I use nothing else.

Know the brand for years, from time to time check on them but: no PT-PT layout, no MacOS support / layout. I can pay premium but to justify it I can't have compromises.

3

u/iP0dKiller 1d ago

That’s a pitty! I guess they only have French, English (UK) and German layout at this moment.

u/Huge-Brilliant-1407 1d ago

I stick to Logitech for now but I think Cherry in terms of quality would be better.

Logitech is not a wrong choice either, despite the quality difference. My second last keyboard I had was made by them and it lasted from 1995 to 2020!

1

u/Fussel2107 1d ago

They have a lot more. When you go to their website, for each model you can download a datasheet with the available options. For most there are several languages and layouts listed

1

u/iP0dKiller 1d ago

Yeah, I admit, I didn’t really delve into it because I only needed the German layout, which I knew they have.

3

u/meeee 1d ago

Well, next time you buy you might be ditching the Mac and going for Linux anyway so then a cherry keyboard will be good

1

u/Huge-Brilliant-1407 1d ago

When there's a decent produt at Mac level I'm all for it. Not fundamentalist enough to just switch over to something worse.

I’m on a MacBook M1 now, and everything Apple (TV, iPhone, Watch). I was all in. Using it until it breaks and then I’m going Tuxedo notebook and Ubuntu.

with the current climate they might be interested in offering different labels / layouts, maybe mail them

1

u/whatnoimnotlurking 1d ago

They have several keyboards with Mac layouts. Not sure about a Portuguese layout though.

Now there is a name I havent seen for a long time.

For computer peripherals we have a lot of great choices. Logitech, Cherry, Steelseries all make great products (well, Steelseries fell off in the mice department though). Also Wooting, Endgame Gear.

And they have excellent customer service. I emailed them and asked if I could buy a new key for my rubber dome keyboard, and they just sent me a new key and a new scissor spring for free. Now, I have full control again.

How come i have never heard of this brand? How come we suck at advertising so much? CHERRY KW X ULP seems to be a perfect replacement for logitech mx keys

1

u/iP0dKiller 23h ago

Well, some companies rely more on word-of-mouth, which is absolutely fine and I think that’s the best way to advertise, because if they can sell their products without having to start an advertising campaign, they tend to do it through quality.

As for Logitech: they are also a European company (Austrian, I think), so you can buy from them with a clear conscience.

1

u/eihwazz 23h ago

Hmm, we need to learn more anyway. I am sure those forums on discussing keyboards and what not are full of ghostwriters giving paid opinions looking like honest ones.

Just purchased KW X ULP for me, it wasn't cheap though xd

Their keyboards are really really good

There's also a factory tour on YouTube, pretty amazing stuff

Great Keyboards, I love the clicky blue switches! I also got a keyboard made in Czech Republic (if I remember correctly) from them, so not only Germany and (possibly) China.

1

u/Affectionate_Pin_426 1d ago

Dygma keyboards are from Spain, while being manufactured in China. They are still great.

u/renzd 1d ago

Fantastic keyboards. I had been a Corsair fan for a while but decided to make the switch and couldn't be happier. Amazing performance, nice design, quiet and comfortable at a great price. I probably would've budgeted for 2x as much if I had known how good they were.

I hear great things about their mechanical keyboards, but I personally prefer low-profile scissor-switch keyboards and I'm not aware of any in their offer. Or maybe they have one, but it's silly expensive - costs twice as much as the (also European) Logitech MX Keys (amazing keyboard, if you like low-profile, scissor-switch).

1

u/Aardappelhuree 22h ago

The keyboard was incredibly annoying though, with weird keyboard combinations putting the thing in a weird state.

I’d stick to their keycaps or keep the manual around

I have three Cherry keyboards one for the office, one for the home office, and one for my son’s gaming all of which are excellent. I never knew Cherry was a German company, though.
