Car Meme Throwback to losing my tire šŸ˜‚

Post image

Hit a nasty pothole only to find out I snapped 4 of my 5 tire studs. Started driving to autozone to get the replacements and I called to make sure they had them and the dude lost his mind when I told him I was driving the car there to get them. He told me to pull over immediately so as I was pulling into a parking spot at an apartment complex she finally snapped. Literally no damage (that needed attention), replaced the studs and life went on. Just came across the pic and started laughing so thought id share my stupidity.

Ya I was 18 and dumb. Still dumb because I said I lost my tire instead of saying I lost the wheel haha

Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

I had 4 out of five studs break off on I-90 on a holiday weekend. Called AAA and after 4 hours and no tow truck despite constantly calling and it getting dark with semis flying by, found one good nut and got it onto the remaining good stud.

Luckily the center hub protruded out enough to support the remaining stud as I drove 5 miles to a parts store that luckily was open. Bought a hammer and studs and was able to replace the studs in the parking lot.

Had my senior in-laws with me and was afraid of getting hit as it got dark out with no street lights.

Canceled AAA as the only other time, where I only needed to be towed a mile to the dealer (month old new car with dead battery) it took 6 hours and I lost a day of pay.

New car should have used roadside assistance. Point of a new car, all the perks

This was back in 2005 but yeah, shoulda called the dealer

It's easy to forget

Got a flat in my Camaro. No spare, just fix a flat from the factory

Gotta save that .03 MPG

I called AAA, forgetting about Chevy roadside assistance

Took 2 hours on a Sunday morning, and the tow dispatch was 1.2 miles away

Happened to me, except I didn't know in advance. The previous owner had over-tightened the bolts, I'd had the car about 2months when I was going through a supermarket car park and heard a cracking noise followed by the sound of metal hitting the floor. Decided to go to the other end of the carp park away from all the other cars to check it out. Heard another crack, then another, then as I turn the wheel the front of the car drops and I see the wheel rolling away, had to get out and chase it because it was going downhill towards a busy road. Crushed the wheel arch where the car dropped onto the wheel. Still kept the car for about a year after that, other than shearing the studs it was a great car, performed well in the snow and never had a break down. Had to get rid of it because rust set in to the damaged arch.

You mean you replaced the hub assembly?

1

u/chrschn_15 Feb 09 '25

I tapped the studs out and replaced them and that was it. If thatā€™s what a hub assembly is haha. TBH still dumb when it comes to cars and thatā€™s why I said I lost my tire instead of saying I lost the wheel.

Picture is kinda dark and I'm really stoned so I had to look at the picture better. I thought your wheel snapped off the steering knuckle somehow. Btw your brake rotor slides over the hub, then the hub sits in the bearing that is pressed into your steering knuckle. If you're confused, the hub is what holds the studs that you bolt the wheel onto. Only reason I bring it up is because I have to do both my front steering knuckles in the the next month. I was originally going to replace the bearings but then you have to get them pressed in. And that seems like the kind of precision I'd fuck up. I'd also like to save time so I'm just going to replace with knuckles that already have new hub and bearing.

Sorry for the rant

Wasn't aware that could be done, apologies

All good man, you couldā€™ve fronted like I was wrong and I wouldā€™ve went with it. Take a bong rip for me, Iā€™m on a tolerance break the rest of the month. ā¤ļø

Damn. To be clear, you didnā€™t lose a tire, you lost a wheel.

Been there a couple times. Once was just random af. Lug nuts came loose half way through a road trip. Idk if it was malicious (because to this day I canā€™t figure out what else it would have been) but I was in the middle of nowhere and the rear wheel got wobbly. I pulled over and had 2 lug nuts left, both loose. I jacked it up and stole one off each of the other three wheels and limped it to the next tire shop.

The other time I know for a fact it was the tire shop. This was years later, different rig. I had just got new tires installed and was driving on the freeway. My rear wheel passed me at 70mph, back end dropped and I slammed into the guardrail. All the lugs had snapped. Totaled. It was one of those things where Iā€™d have to lawyer up or I could just use the insurance and be thankful it wasnā€™t worse. I called them and let them know what happened but of course they werenā€™t gonna cop to it. I donā€™t blame them, liability is a bitch.

I did leave a 1 star review at the tire shops google with a detailed explanation.

Thatā€™s actually crazy bro, Iā€™m glad you were okay through it at least! That like nightmare fuel losing a wheel at 70

1

u/Lttiggity Feb 09 '25

It wasā€¦ exciting. More to the point it was a mess. Definitely coulda been a lot worse. I was fine, not even a bruise. My truck was not. Lost that wheel, back end dropped, went sideways, got it straightened out right when I came in contact with the guardrail so I just ground down that until I came to a stop. Thankfully it was 4wd so I threw it in 4 low and drug its ass to the next open pull off section of the freeway. The damage was already done at that point soā€¦ ya. Rough day.

u/mygrandfathersomega Feb 09 '25

Lost the whole damn wheel

1

u/Jacktheforkie Feb 09 '25

I hit a crater earlier now my car makes a funny noise when I turn, fucking ā€œgreatā€ British riads

1

u/lol_camis Feb 09 '25

Your tire is exactly where it's supposed to be.

Although your wheel isn't.

u/Taken_Abroad_Book Feb 09 '25

šŸŽ¶You picked a fine time to leave me loosewheelšŸŽ¶

1

u/froggqueen Feb 10 '25

Iā€™m very surprised you didnā€™t have to fix or replace anything else in the suspension system after your car literally struck a stanky leg

1

u/chrschn_15 Feb 10 '25

To be fair I was only going 3 miles an hour but there was a lil damage to the fender I didnā€™t fix and she rode until I traded it in a year later.

1

u/nhp890 Feb 10 '25

Been thereā€¦ twice. Once a tyre shop forgot to tighten the lugnuts and my wheel fell off 20 seconds after I left the shop, and the other time all of my lugs snapped on a motorway, reasons unknown

1

I bought a car sight unseen over Facebook while I was at work, and had my friends drive it home for me. As he made the last turn into town the wheel came off and completely destroyed the whole right front corner of the car.

Didn't even get to see it and it was already a wreck.

a pothole did this? i think it was more like the final nail the coffin. you def be hitting all the land mines to work

1

u/chrschn_15 Feb 09 '25

Nasty pothole. I never noticed any weird riding but hit that pothole, pulled over, and four lugs were gone. Haha couldā€™ve already had some underlying damage h didnā€™t know about tho before hand
