Body Why do American "trucks" always have tub backs?

Tub backs are fairly common here too in Australia but tray back is the norm. When I was in North America however I didn't see one normal Ute with a tray back. Why is this?

The tub back seems so inconvenient. You can't bolt or weld to it. You can't load from the side, and 15-20% of the volume of the bed is wasted in the thickness of the body panels and wheel wells. They also seem to get damaged much easier.

How do you get around these issues with the tub? Are the trays just not sold over there? Would you like them?

Body Could I have done this with a bracelet on a 4 minute drive?

My friend took me for a spin around the block in his car. He had the windows down and I do wear a small gold bracelet on that arm but I’m not really the type to hang my arm out of the window.

If it was one scratch in roughly the same area I’d be like “shit dude that must have been me, I’ll pay for it to be fixed”, but the amount of scratches, the distances apart and the direction some of them are heading in seems absurd that it could be caused my jewellery on such a short trip.

I’m a bit of a pushover and while at first I was like, no fucking way this was me, I’m starting to question myself.

Body My wife was involved in a car accident which at first it didn’t seem so serious, we took the vehicle to the body shop and a couple of days later the insurance company called stating the vehicle was totaled. I’m not a car expert but that seems suspicious. Any idea why they would do that ?

My ‘91 toyota has started rusting. How could I stop the spreading? Or is this fine? I don’t need it to be seamless, most of the paint is sun faded anyway. Any suggestions?

Body How can you be a car enthusiast in the Rust Belt?

I’ve always loved cars. but I’m based in the Rust Belt, and it feels like the constant battle against rust and harsh winters makes it harder to enjoy cars. I’m wondering how other car enthusiasts in this region manage to maintain and enjoy their vehicles?

Do you have tips for protecting cars from rust, especially during the winter months? What’s the best way to prevent them from deteriorating? Or, is it just a part of the experience to have to deal with rust and damage on a more frequent basis? Would love to hear your experiences and advice!

Feel free to share any success stories of keeping cars in good shape despite the challenges of living in the Rust Belt!

Body Matte finish: What’s the lesser of two evils? Touch free car wash or winter road sludge?

Thumbnail

I have a Hyundai Santa Fe with the Earthy Brass Matte paint. It’s a gorgeous color, but I didn’t know that matte finishes required special maintenance before purchasing. I didn’t realize that automatic car washes - even the touch free ones - are a no-go because of what the chemicals do to the matte finish. During the spring, summer, and fall, this extra maintenance is not an issue for me. I’ve since read up on what’s good to use on the matte paint and I’m generally happy with my car and maintaining the finish myself.

Winter has been rough though and with the sub-zero temperatures, my hose is put away for the winter (as it would freeze up) and my outdoor spigot is shut off, so I don’t have access to cleaning my car the way I usually do. I recently changed jobs and have a much longer daily commute. I live in a very rural, snowy/mountainous region and so my car is currently filthy with all of the winter sludge from the roads. Yesterday I realized how badly my headlights are covered, and it’s likely impacting my visibility.

So my question is: what’s the lesser of two evils: is the winter road sludge (salt, chemicals, etc) worse for the paint than going through a car wash would be? Will I completely ruin the finish by going through a touch-free car wash a few times during the winter? Paying to have my car hand-washed and detailed during the winter is likely out of my budget and there aren’t any businesses like that within 45 minutes of where I live…

Body Is this too much rust for an 08 Nissan Xterra with 130k miles?

This Nissan Xterra is at a reasonable price with a clean carfax. The rust on the bottom makes me pretty apprehensive. Car was previously in Maryland. I would definitely have to get a new tire, but I don't know about the rest of the undercarriage.

I’m interested in buying a used 2014 Mazda MAZDA MAZDA3 · i SV Sedan 4D that has 192k miles but has a clean CARFAX, regular maintenance records, and was reconditioned about 5 months ago. I’ll be paying $5,500 from a private seller for it, if I choose to go through with it.

This would be my first car, and I know the mileage is pretty high, but I’ve heard that Mazda’s are very reliable; this particular one is within my budget, and has all the safety features & tech that I want. I also have a father that can do minor fixes & oil changes.

But is this a bad idea? I’ve heard rust can be a problem, and I’m not sure if the mark is a sign of that… I do live in GA if that helps (& the car has only been in GA as well).

Looking at this Suzuki Jimny and after some inspection in saw this particular black coating on the bottom of the car near the suspension. I think it’s an anti rust coating and I think I see some donor metal welded onto it.

Please give me some advice on this
