Ol' Yeller Our Ol’ Yeller, Bean, lost her battle with cancer and crossed the rainbow bridge today. She’s already sent us several signs that she’s ok but man has it been a hard day. This is her last yell fit from about a week ago. We hope it brings a smile to your face as much as it does ours.

Thank you. In the few times we moved across the US, she would perch up on my shoulder and make that raggy yell the whole time. She will definitely be missed but we at least have these videos to keep her fresh.

She’s already sent us several signs that she’s ok...
I stood by your bed last night,
I came to have a peep
I saw that you were crying... you found it hard to sleep.
I whispered to you softly, as you brushed away a tear.
It's Bean, I haven't left you...
I'm well, I'm fine. I'm here.
I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea
You were thinking of the many times,
Your hands reached down to me.
You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew...
In the stillness of that moment,
I was very close to you.
I'm here so close beside you, so near you everyday,
believe me when I tell you all,
I never went away

Lost one of my cats a few months ago, still really hurts sometimes.
Reading this helped. Thank you.

I lost my cat over a year ago and still cry at the mention if his name. Although it still hurts, time does lessen the pain. I'm sorry for the loss of your precious kitty.

How did you find out she had cancer? My whiny boy is almost 14 and I want to do everything I can for him and nobody talks about warning signs.
33
u/AzaleaFromJupiter Nov 07 '20
I’m not the OP, but weight loss was the first sign when my baby Hazel had cancer. (Oral squamous cell carcinoma). I lost her about 9 months later, she was 13.
19
u/masterofhuntrs Nov 07 '20
I'm sorry to hear about your loss as well :( I lost my precious tabby Koda to cancer last year.
Adding to your point, weight loss coupled with a lessened desire to eat were my cat's problems. He also had trouble using the litterbox and had constant potty mishaps (diarrhea) around the house.
I found an article which may be helpful in recognizing constant behaviors or patterns for cats and what to watch out for!

u/luminositae Nov 07 '20
To add to this, you might also want to monitor kidney function, as that tends to deteriorate as cats get older. Typical signs include breath smelling like ammonia (urine smell), excessive drinking, excessive urination, as well as weight loss, lethargy, vomiting, etc. Kidney levels can be checked by a simple blood test at the vet during yearly visits as part of senior cat check-ups, so it wouldn't hurt to ask your vet about it. Chronic kidney disease /failure is also manageable with a low protein diet and the occasional subcutaneous fluids and has an average life expectancy of 5 years after diagnosis. There isn't a cure, but the treatments do slow down the progression of kidney failure significantly, especially if caught early. :)

So Bean was our little "maintenance-free" baby in that she never had any major medical issues throughout her life. She did end up gradually going blind for an unrelated, genetic issue but otherwise was the picture of health.
Bean, along with everyone else in our household, had an annual visit back in February which came back perfectly clear (for a 13.5 y/o cat) - great blood work, cell counts were normal, no major issues. Fast-forward to October, and we started noticing that she was missing the cat box fairly consistently which was abnormal behavior to us as we never moved it from its location and there were no stressors in the house to provoke her otherwise.
We thought it may be an UTI, so we took her in and they did a normal blood panel. They came back and said her red blood cells were down 20% (I think) but her white cell counts were 400% of what they should be. Again, thinking this was an UTI we weren't too spooked. We wanted to triple check so asked the vet to run a few specialized panels (ELISA for feline leukemia, etc) but those all came back negative. We finally opted to have an ultrasound done and that is where the vet discovered masses on her spleen and liver. We didn't do a biopsy but our vet determined it to be lymphoma.
Sorry for the lengthy post but to simply answer your question (among the other replies on here too), our warning signs was her marking outside of her box and a little bit of weight loss.
10
u/squishypasta Nov 07 '20
Seniors should get yearly check ups too aside from monitoring for all the abnormal changes.
4
u/Muzzledpet Nov 07 '20
Cats are very sneaky about it when they start to get sick (instincts often tell them to act normal as possible till they can't hide it anymore). Subtle things can indicate an issue- not eating well is a biggie, being more clingy or more stand-offish than usual, sleeping a lot more or less than they typically do. Also, in general cats can't go for long without food- 2 to 3 days of lack of food/vomiting can cause liver issues (especially for plump kitties); as well as less than adequate amounts of food over days to weeks.
2
u/enchantedchair Nov 07 '20
Definitely chat with your vet and see what kind of yearly plan you can follow to monitor your sweet boys health. Blood tests like a wellness profile is a good idea, cats like to hide their issues until the last possible minute sometimes. Of course if you don’t want to spend hundreds on blood tests every year, ask about a preanesthetic profile. Usually they do so before surgery or general anesthesia but the profile looks at all the major organs and how their functioning. My clinic offers it for $84 along with a $16 sample collection fee. I’m not sure how other clinics price theirs.

I'm so sorry for your loss,
At the same time, I want to sincerely thank you for posting this. At first, watching Bean reminded me of my cat who lost his battle with kidney disease in September, and it made me cry a lot both for your loss and mine. But it also gave me the courage to watch videos of Milo again. The first week or so after he passed even the thought of watching videos of him made me immeasurably sad and led to fits of sobbing, so I've avoided it for the last month. But thanks to you sharing a wonderful video showcasing Bean's personality, it made me gather up the strength to watch Milo videos again. And instead of crying this time, it made me smile. So from the bottom of my heart, thank you 🥰
The feeling of pain of losing a companion doesn't hurt less, but it has become a lot more manageable as time passes. And eventually the sadness of loss has slowly shifted more towards the happiness of the time we got together. I hope you find comfort in the good memories you've shared together. ❤

I’m so sorry for your loss, and to everyone else in the comments who are also grieving their for their kitties. One day the pain will pass, I promise. I had a little ginger Tom when I was a kid who unfortunately died suddenly, and I was heartbroken, but now I fondly remember him running through the garden to me when I called his name, the cuddles, I laugh when I think of how much he hated my sister’s rocking horse and attacked it when he first saw it, how he’d surprise me by jumping on my head in the middle of the night and run off. I miss him and I’ll never forget him, as I’ll miss all the other cats when they’re gone, but the pain turns into deep love and happiness when I think of him. Hope you’re doing well, OP ❤️

He does a little shake at around the 22 second mark. My cat has been doing the same thing for a few weeks now and I’m wondering if I should take him to the vet. Is that a symptom of cancer or pain in cats? He’s a very old cat; I don’t know how old because I just rescued him a few months ago

Poor girl. My old boy grey Sir Pendleton went down with a good fight too. He had something similar to cancer, albeit different enough. FIV. Poor bastard just went downhill steady, and even the IV we gave him daily wouldn't help him enough. Eventually I had to put him down. The last time I heard him purr was the day I left for work. That afternoon, mom had him to the vet for struggling to breathe. Pets are something else, and I miss him dearly. He was 14. I wish your old yeller has a peaceful afterlife as I would imagine Sir Pendleton might have.

I always cry when I think about rainbow Bridge. I lost my childhood dog 3 years ago due to wobblers syndrome (Doberman) and the vet gave us a card that told the poem. I don't know if I believe in heaven and all that, but if there is, I truly hope we can see our pets again.
5
u/Xxteve Nov 07 '20 edited Nov 07 '20
I was just thinking about this. I’m not religious in the slightest, or spiritual. However, for some reason, I can feel the presence of my pets who’ve died. Never people, just the animals. I can feel my old dog sitting by me in the kitchen and my cat curled up with me in bed at night, and sometimes the dog will join. It’s been years and I don’t even live in the same house where they died, yet I feel them there and just wanna give them one last cuddle and a pet. Is that weird?

Nov 07 '20
What a pretty girl she was! She looks so much like my friend’s cat Kitty who passed away last week due to cancer. My friend and his parents made sure Kitty’s final moments on Earth were comfortable, filled with love and warmth. I know Kitty greeted Bean at the Rainbow Bridge today.

I wanted to thank everyone for their kind words and my heart goes out to all of those who have also experienced loss, whether that is recent or not. Bean was our best friend for the last 14.5 years and it's eviscerating to say the least to not have her physically bumming around the house any longer. I'll try to respond to as many of those as I can, but if I can't again, thank you.

The worst part about loosing an Ol’ Yeller is how quiet the house is after. I lost my orange boy Pigpen a couple years ago, he was 19. I was so used to hearing him yell and chat and be his talkative self that when we said goodbye I couldn’t sleep that night because not hearing him yell was so odd. Bean was an adorable girl and I’m so sorry for your loss ❤️
