Seeing this in the theater was so surreal. Modern Anime was still something fairly obscure in America that you had to go out of your way to find and watch on VHS and guess what they were saying in Japanese. Here’s this state of the art anime on the big scream and I don’t have to guess.

It blew me away when I first watched it - I'd never seen anything like it. Still incredible to think the design team crafted the entire movie old school by sketching each frame on paper, copying it to a transparent cel, and then painting, drying, and photographing the cel against a painted background. No CGI, no AI!
