I don’t know the movie: is having the lights with grids in frame intentional to show that they are on set?

I've watched this movie and Paadmavat several times and never noticed the grid lights before, too busy watching the actors!
Probably the DP was told where the lights were but lost track when actually filming... it doesn't bother me.

I'm willing to argue it looks enough like simple vents in the canvas of the tent to let light in and smoke out to pass for me

Yes, I was also thinking that, maybe real tents have exactly this to keep birds out.

Why is it in Indian movies, there’s always a scene like this. What’s the appeal to having a war hero sing with his merry men. And in perfect choreography.

Maybe the vibe is similar to sailor songs, war chants/war songs and stuff. These movies are musicals.
Giving a western example here for the vibes. Why do we have songs like these...

The indian songs are just made in different style of music and dance, different context...one that appeals to the local and domestic audience.
..Although the art of good intentional songs, musicals and music videos is kinda degrading in India. (Or maybe thats my subjective experience)
When done right, the songs improve/elevate the story/emotions to the next level...just as a good soundtrack by Hans Zimmer can do.

Indian culture loves their music ¯_(ツ)_/¯
It’s also a flex in a way… i feel like very few Hollywood productions can pull something off that’s this scale

Choreography was cool, but was anyone else expecting more from the actual camerawork? Felt pretty underwhelming lol

It depends on the intention of the filmmakers. I think the camera does what it's supposed to, spotlighting the incredible mise-en-scene and choreography. Too much moving around can be distracting at times.

Yeah there’s so much kinetic movement already in the frame you don’t necessarily need unnecessary angles/cuts

For dance heavy scenes I don’t think that’s fair… That’s like saying the camerawork in 12 angry men is underwhelming. Sometimes it’s best to just show the action in frame and let the actors do their thang without any flashy moves, especially if it’s something more reminiscent of a stage play, like a Bollywood dance number or courtroom drama

Same director and actor and composer as this:

You get the same vibe as well too. Basically warriors having a party.
