RECOMMENDED Tasman bay from Tree house might be the best Pilsner I’ve ever had
My wife can spend all the time she wants in Sephora while I chill at the Tree house pop up bar, 2-3 hours is fine by me😂

Even their pilsner is hazy?

u/KennyShowers 2d ago
They make a bunch of different lagers including a variety of pilsners, and I've never seen one of their look like this. Most I've seen are pretty close to true-to-style.

As a professional brewer of 12 years, I officially don’t know what the word Pilsner actually represents anymore. I’m also all for creativity! I bet it was bomb tho!

u/fermentedradical 2d ago
Not me. I would be very happy to scream at the brewers with the Czechs and Germans to clarify this fucking thing.

TH does have some great Czech pils tho. They usually have them with the Lukr/side pull at least at their Tewksbury location

If you’re looking for a decent Lukr pour, I recommend Notch. TH has some good lagers, but Notch is far and away the best lager brewery in the area.

I agree. A lesser known but fantastic lager spot in the North Shore is Brewery Silvaticus in Amesbury. Amazing lagers/pils

I just read the description on untappd, and I also no longer know what a Pilsner is anymore lol.

What's the difference between this and a cold IPA or IPL? Just marketing?

An IPA would mean it’s top-fermented, a lager means it’s bottom-fermented and cold crashed/cold fermented. You can do all the steps for a technical dictionary definition Pilsner and end up with a cloudy beer, it just may not fit any of the traditional substyle categories.
Pretty sure IPL usually means a top-fermented beer that’s fermented cold.

A cold IPA (what they asked about specifically, not just any IPA) is specifically an adjunct-heavy malt bill, fermented with a neutral lager yeast at warmer than typical temperatures. It's a pretty shit style name, but that's what it is.
An IPL is basically just an IPA recipe fermented with a lager yeast at classic cooler lager temperatures. There can be about as much variety in IPLs as there can be in IPAs.
FYI, top-fermenting and bottom-fermenting are misnomers and holdovers from outdated understanding of fermentation. The name comes from traditionally cropping yeast from the top or bottom of a fermenter, but this is not something that actually reflects where the yeast ferments, and fermentation happens throughout the whole beer.

It is up there with hazy cream stout. New plan we just call everything beer or IPA.

u/ih8cheese 2d ago
Pilsner malt, lager yeast and all the hops in New Zealand I think. It’s just hazy from hoppy goodness

u/rickeyethebeerguy 2d ago
Don’t get me wrong, west coast pils are one of my favorite. It’s just unique how that word started with Czech style pils or a German pils and now it’s just a lower ABV IPA. I do love all of them too.

100% with you. One of my favorite beers to come out of Tallahassee where I live is called Lookdown by Deep Brewing. It’s a clear, crispy Pilsner that also happens to be a to be dry hopped to have great hop aroma and taste. It feels like a legit Pilsner, but with an extra step, and I’m good with that while fully understanding it’s now NOT a traditional Pilsner.
I can’t go as far as making Pilsners hazy. I just can’t get there.

I hear you man. As someone who has been drinking craft beers for 15+ years I feel like that the industry is creating new styles from something that we’ve been enjoying for a long time. Not that I care as long as the end product is good 👍

u/ImTommyJarvis 2d ago
If you've been drinking "craft beer for 15+" you'd agree that's a terrible representation of a pilsner.
5
u/socialgambler 2d ago
Word, and no lager yeast is haze positive, so it's just a yeasty pils. No thanks.
5
u/ImTommyJarvis 2d ago
I would question a "yeasty pils". I would also question the cold crash and dry hopping methods.

I just had a dude arguing with me cold ipa isn't a style.
0
u/gofunkyourself69 1d ago
It really isn't. I mean it's clearly a thing people say. But it's jammed into a nonexistent gap between hoppy cream ale and IPL.
0
u/brewjammer 1d ago
I don't understand that hate. people think thay are BJCP police or some shit. I know it isn't. that's not the point that's being made
0
u/gofunkyourself69 17h ago
Nothing to do with "beer police" it's just a marketing term for a style that doesn't even exist.
1
u/brewjammer 15h ago
You decide it's just marketing. You decide it doesn't exist. The breweries that make it must be the problem. https://byo.com/article/the-cool-new-style-cold-ipa/ That hole article must be a fever dream then.

What the hell kind of pilsner looks like that? You sure you didn't actually get a shit ugly hazy?

I love Tree House, I also love pilsners. I drank Tasman Bay last week at Tewksbury. It’s just not a pilsner by anyone’s definition. Hazy cold pale ale maybe? I don’t know what style it is, but it’s not a pils.

A pilsner? Certainly doesn't look like one. But from that brewery, makes sense.

they should just call it a session IPA or a hazy pale
4
u/KennyShowers 2d ago
I mean it's probably bottom-fermented and cold fermented, just because it's not clear doesn't make it an ale.
0
u/OatmealAntstronaut 2d ago
Ah right. Maybe an IPL is a better term since it is fermented like a lager
5
u/KennyShowers 2d ago
Per the blurb on Untappd they call it a “modern lager,” not like they’re trying to pass it off as anything traditional.
7
u/klsklsklsklsklskls 2d ago
Eh, on the can they just call it a Pilsner as well.
-2
u/KennyShowers 2d ago
Sure but they’re not calling it a Czech/Bohemian or something. I definitely agree the appearance raises my eyebrows a bit but for 2025 a hoppy Pilsner being cloudy isn’t the craziest thing I’ve ever heard.
4
u/klsklsklsklsklskls 2d ago
Look, I'm not a snob and I'm sure the beer tastes great. But a Pilsner is a very specific thing of which theres a few variations and none of them have haze. They could've easily called it a hoppy lager or any number of other things that wouldve been more correct.

u/PsychologicalYak4549 2d ago
I just went to their new spot in New York last week. Very cool facility

u/ih8cheese 1d ago
For all you out there who are doubting it’s the Pilsner just check on Untappd for pics of Tasman bay. It’s very hazy for Pilsner but so damn good

A hazy Pilsner is a shit Pilsner. This is clearly not a Pilsner lol, it’s an ipa.

u/BigBootyBro93 1d ago
God damn, why does every place pour in plastic cups now. I try to avoid any brewery that does this (unless a bit outdoor event is going on).

u/drumguitar 2d ago
can't go wrong with Tree House

u/TB1289 2d ago
A hazy Pilsner says otherwise.

For the record, I’m a big fan of Treehouse but this is not their best work…or OP ordered the wrong beer.
-2
u/drumguitar 2d ago
nah i get it. i don't think it's the wrong beer, just not a traditional pils
7
u/TB1289 2d ago
Or a Pils at all.

u/drumguitar 1d ago edited 1d ago
yeah i'd call it a hoppy lager but the brewery calls it a "modern pilsner" so maybe i'm just being generous to them. cheers!
