Fan: Looks dope!! Great camera angle of Superman flying!! Except there's something with his face that looks a little off. I know there's plenty of time to refine the CG. 🤙🏻

James Gunn: There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David.

2

u/lavenk7 Feb 08 '25

I think they definitely went with the wrong lens in that case.

2

u/Key-Bit8093 Feb 06 '25

Mente que nem sente

2

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '25

He has that Jewish lazy eye condition that gets worse when he’s looking straight ahead

1

u/jonadragonslay Jan 31 '25

So true, Emma Stone looked hideous in Birdman.

2

u/ApplicationRoyal865 Jan 31 '25

There's no way there's no cgi. Unless they got the lighting to match perfectly, there will be color grading, digital shadows, digital lights etc.

But man if there truly is no cgi I want to see whatever 3d lighting rig they are using. With the speed superman is flying the rigs must be flying at a really fast mm/s. Or he's just sitting in those ILM volume

1

u/ALARMED_SUS097 16d ago

No, Gunn did not say they did not use CGI, he said they did not use CGI to in his face. Like making 3D models and putting his face on it. Of course they can do color grading and CGI for the background, but that is another thing.

5

u/Careless-Situation68 Jan 30 '25

lets not forget the belly. the round protuberant belly

4

u/Pseudocaesar Jan 30 '25

Only looks weird in still frame. In motion it looks awesome

6

u/Wandersturm Jan 30 '25

It's NOT CGI. It's the type of lens and angle, and it really does NOT look weird. I thought the scene looked pretty cool. He did a high speed barrel roll.

3

u/Ike_In_Rochester Feb 01 '25

The shot struck me as something that LOOKS like it’s from All-Star Superman.

1

u/Wandersturm Feb 01 '25

Yeah, they had weird artwork in All-Star Superman...
I almost abbreviated that.. until I realized what it would spell...

2

u/GamePunk2407 Jan 31 '25

It looks WEIRD. Look at the eyes.

1

u/Wandersturm Feb 01 '25

Yes, it looks weird, but it's still the angle and the lens used. It's not a CGI image.

1

u/1998-2019 Jan 30 '25

I’m still watching the movie but oof he needs to fire his cinematographer or someone needs to be fired for that shot

5

u/FlanOk4765 Jan 30 '25

My guess is that he has a lazy eye and it becomes more pronounced when he looks up.

-6

u/Right_Wolverine_3992 Jan 30 '25

You’d think someone that almost got his career smashed last time due to poor humor on social media would just stay off or at least have a PR specialist review it…

Not a Gunn fan here.

Not a Gunn movie fan either and I think this Superman movie is going to be very disappointing.

3

u/uncle-noodle Jan 31 '25

Well considering he very arguably got this job because of those posts, I think he will be fine.

Also how do you know he isn’t having some one in PR review these posts before he posts them?

-3

u/No_Public_7677 Jan 29 '25

He is a serial liar at this point

7

u/MattRB02 Jan 29 '25

I felt that the issue was more about the way he moved (too fast, lacked weight) and maybe the expression on his face was too neutral to convincingly feel like he’s flying maybe.

I mean, I trust Gunn. Love the Guardians films, TSS and Creature Commandos was great. I don’t care if a shot looks awkward, I just want a good Superman story.

Lollllllll the bad press this is getting is so refreshing

12

u/timesaver666 Jan 28 '25

It might be “100% real” but that still doesn’t fix the fact the shot looks really weird.

-4

u/jacob_carter Jan 28 '25

Ok… I guess thanks for the explanation Mr Gunn. By the way, it still looks like crap.

2

u/TheDelmeister Jan 28 '25

Well, something is off

6

u/KittenDecomposer96 Jan 28 '25

Isn't this an obvious jab at the CG removed moustache from Henry Cavill ?

17

u/Antrikshy Jan 28 '25

No, he’s addressing endless comments about why he looks wide eyed or why his face is CG in that shot.

11

u/griffshan Jan 28 '25

Gunn is far too online for a serious filmmaker. He gets upset and fires off way too easy.

1

u/Key-Bit8093 Feb 06 '25

Às vezes acho que ele é mais garoto propaganda do que CEO da dc

2

u/AllMightyImagination Jan 28 '25

That's what I just thought. He needs to shut up and let his content speak for itself

He’s always defensive as fuck

18

u/Pod-Bay-Doors Jan 28 '25

I wouldnt really call this "firing off" but yeah id personally just ingore it too

-1

u/griffshan Jan 28 '25

Many examples not just this

2

u/GratefulDoom90 Jan 28 '25

Exactly! I hate that shit! I love Gunn’s movies, but come on now do we really have to respond to every single person who has a theory to debunk it? That’s like half the fun of comic book movies.

1

u/Key-Bit8093 Feb 06 '25

Tbm acho que ele não é muito bom de planejar universo, querendo misturar o dcu e dceu, mas depois diz que alguns filmes não são cânon. Era mais fácil começar do zero pra não ter que mexer nisso.

1

u/GratefulDoom90 Feb 06 '25

I don’t speak Spanish and I’m not on a computer where I can translate I’m sorry!!

2

u/Key-Bit8093 Feb 06 '25

I was just saying that i think gunn isn't good planning a shared universe. Because he always say things that contradict what his projects showed

1

u/GratefulDoom90 Feb 06 '25

Oh yeah he’s not great at this. He always says that he’s going to make a universe with a shared canon, but then that’s too hard, so how he’s saying canon doesn’t matter. I like his movie, but he’s clearly in over his head here.

1

u/Key-Bit8093 Feb 06 '25

Dc should forget a shared universe and go back to independent movies like the batman.

1

u/GratefulDoom90 Feb 06 '25

Yeah, but then we wouldn’t get any projects with other DC characters and we’d continue to get reboot after reboot of Batman like we have been getting. People only go see projects with random lesser known characters if it ties in to the larger story and has cameos from well known characters.

1

u/Key-Bit8093 Feb 06 '25

Yeah, but due to the last ten years, i think dc isn't good with shared universes.

I think it would be easier for each character to have his own franchise and universe. Like the 2000s .

1

u/GratefulDoom90 Feb 07 '25

Oh I agree with you, but nowadays, with the MCU having the popularity it does, people expect two different movies to connect and if they don’t, people in this terrible fandom will certainly complain lol

1

u/Key-Bit8093 Feb 06 '25

It's portuguese. My reddit translated your comment so i thought you were speaking on portuguese as well 😅😅😅

1

u/GratefulDoom90 Feb 06 '25

Lmao ooops! I was wondering cause it looked a little like Spanish, but I know a little Spanish and I was totally lost lol.

1

u/Key-Bit8093 Feb 06 '25

Yeah, people always think portuguese = spanish

1

u/GratefulDoom90 Feb 07 '25

Well, I’m seeing the “o” and the “que” and the “de” and my brain just said “that’s some weird Spanish” the “ã” and “ç” should have given it away though cause those aren’t Spanish. Ultimately, I think I just suffer from a terrible chronic and incurable condition called “Being a US citizen” where I think that everyone on the whole internet is from the US. And I even just had to correct myself because I first typed that I was “an American” but then remembered that Brazil and many Portuguese speaking countries are in fact, part of “America” too so I had to change it to “US citizen” we’re just the worst!

5

u/happens_sometimes Jan 28 '25

How is making fun of David part of the fun of comic book movies? Maybe if he was debunking other stuff like actual theories or actors who could play other characters coming up...that's part of the fun. But when people are laughing at David's face and his eyes "issue"? This isn't the thing to get upset on gunn for "firing" back on.

1

u/GratefulDoom90 Jan 29 '25

I mean this particular issue, no. But I think dude was talking about more in general.

u/GratefulDoom90 Jan 28 '25

Yeah it’s a little ridiculous though you gotta admit. Like getting super offended and snapping back at fans on social media is not the way to gain fans. Basically every single person he’s clapped back at will not be holding a grudge against Gunn and likely bring their whole YouTube following along with them. Just fix the shot if half your audience is telling you there’s a problem here. You don’t have to justify every single move you make and that’s a lesson he’s gonna have to learn the hard way

2

u/DrummerDKS Jan 28 '25

Are you saying this response was super offended and snapping at a fan? Admittedly I don’t follow him so I’m not sure how often it happens.

This just looks like an example of a fan making wrong assumptions and Gunn correcting with true evidence.

Probably a use of “any engagement is good engagement.” The more people who know of it, the better. My mom and sisters had no idea there was a new Superman in the works and after we talked about it are probably going to check it out later.

7

u/happens_sometimes Jan 28 '25

I don't really get some of these comments being upset at gunn for defending an actor. People were literally comparing his eyes to a sloth's and laughing and now are mad they're getting called out for their so-called jokes, kind of back pedaling and claiming it's bad angles instead of initial comments on bad cgi eyes or whatever.

1

u/GratefulDoom90 Jan 28 '25

I mean, this isn’t so bad, but there have been times he’s clapped back pretty hard and ridiculously in the past.

2

u/happens_sometimes Jan 28 '25

Ok but we're not talking about those moments.

Idk man. I think is kinda cool to frequently get information about the movies, but he probably should stop doing it because engaging so much with theories, misinformstion, etc, can make people feel more entitled and we already have a big problem with that in the dc fanbase

3

u/griffshan Jan 28 '25

He takes everything to heart and has to reply.

2

u/GratefulDoom90 Jan 28 '25

I really don’t think he can help himself. That scene straight up looks bad though. I think the rest of the trailer looks good, but this looks like shit lol

15

u/Horror_Campaign9418 Jan 28 '25

Superman’s big flying reveal really pooped the bed. Im not a fan of both hands at his side, looks too weird.

And yeah the eye. 👁️

10

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

Well mister gunn, there SHOULD BE.

12

u/afcc1313 Jan 28 '25

People don't want to say it but what looks bad is the strabismus in the actor's eyes

11

u/imArmando Jan 28 '25

Well maybe he could use a bit of CG

5

u/queso_goblin Jan 28 '25

Look at his eyes. It just looks kinda weird

9

u/happens_sometimes Jan 28 '25

Those are his eyes. Look at David's pics. I thought the same, now retracting that comment cos it's kind of rude.

0

u/GratefulDoom90 Jan 28 '25

I mean, I get what you’re saying… his eyes are kind of far apart, but that’s not the issue. If you look at just that shot alone, he does this weird squinty thing with his left eye aboutw halfway through the shot. And also, it looks funny because of the kind of lens they’re using. I’m not saying that means the movie is gonna be crap. I think the rest of the trailer looks great! Just that one weird shot lol

8

u/happens_sometimes Jan 28 '25

I didn't say anything about you thinking the movie might be crap because of it. All I said was his pics are all like that so commenting on his eyes when the only thing that's wrong with the shot is the straight on angle of his face is kind of rude. His eyes are like that in reg photos too. That's just his face.

1

u/GratefulDoom90 Jan 28 '25

No it’s the camera angle and how the shot looks cinematically, not his actual facial features. It’s like a dog with a wide angle go pro shot almost.

13

u/djquu Jan 28 '25

It's not a good angle. 3/3 times we've seen it it looks off and now with confirmation that it's not even CG, just let this idea die.

2

u/c4sul_uno Jan 29 '25

It can work if David's face isnt wooden like Woody from Toy Story. We know he's Superman dat can tank a fireblast. But to sell his vulnerability, David should at least squint his eyes and puckered his lips a bit to show the struggle of high speed flying in snowy setting

5

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '25

No cg but maybe bad editing

42

u/dontshootog Jan 28 '25 edited Jan 28 '25

Yeah here’s the thing. That’s not a good idea angle - that’s an ultra wide angle at close range. And no, it doesn’t look good. It looks like those GoPro videos you have of people’s pets wandering pointed towards their faces.

No problem with the idea - love it actually - but there are better executions.

Edit: Let’s talk optics for clarity (lol). The eyes do not diverge beyond parallel normally. With an ultra wide (less than 35mm full-frame) it’s going to convex the focal plane. So, at that 16mm lens distance I’m using GoPro’s standard equivalent but they likely did not use that wide of an angle), he’d have to be looking into the centre of the lens for his eyes to appear “focused” without the potential for his eyes to appear divergent from a distant focal point.

Or, if you want him looking into the horizon/infinity/world features, as is the intent of the shot, using an ultra wide at that distance, but still have his eyes naturally not appear to diverge +0 degrees (what you would call a lazy eye), he would need to focus on something much closer to the plane of the lens. It’s optics… they should know better.

We don’t notice that effect in the “I’m Alive” shot in Get Him to the Greek for example, because the lens is not centred on Jonah Hill’s face laterally, and so we don’t notice as much from lens perspective.

1

u/Temporary_Cold_5142 Jan 28 '25

Idk, in the Adam Warlock scene it looked dope. It gives the flight emphasis. I'd say the only thing that should be edited is the eye, cause such a close and wide angle make his eyes look way too apart which distracts from the actual shot

1

u/dontshootog Jan 28 '25

Well, that’s just it. With an ultra wide (less than 35mm full-frame) it’s going to convex the focal plane. So he’d have to be looking into the centre of the lens for his eyes to appear “focused” without the potential for his eyes to appear divergent from a distant focal point.

If you want him looking beyond, using an ultra wide at that distance, but have his eyes still naturally not appear to diverge +0 degrees (what you would call a lazy eye), he would need to focus on something much closer to the plane of the lens. It’s optics… they should know better.

3

u/Temporary_Cold_5142 Jan 28 '25

Yeah. I'm saying that they simply should edit it since the shot was already made in that way and it's distracting. It should be fairly easy to fix in postproduction. Other people are saying that other things look weird, that he's too white or something but I don't really agree. I think the rest is just fine and his eyes are the only thing that looks off putting

1

u/dontshootog Jan 28 '25

For all the things that are fixed in post, I’d agree, they should fix it. It is arguably not an effect they would want if it was shot correctly.

6

u/Kubrickwon Jan 28 '25

Your GoPro comment is spot on. That is literally what they are going for. They are trying to emulate the look of the helmet GoPro footage we see from extreme sports athletes, like skydivers, snow boarders, etc… They want to emulate real flying footage to make the Superman flying shots feel more real.

https://youtu.be/kooYQ0IOnoM?si=lnXbid_mpa1ROG2b

2

u/dontshootog Jan 28 '25

I know what they’re going for. The problem is there’re cinematic considerations. To start with, in those GoPro videos, the plane of the lens is farther than what they used. Any closer and you’d be getting even more of the fish eye effect we’re seeing. As they shot it, their eyes could be focused on horizon/infinity and they still would appear closer to parallel than what Superman has.

11

u/DaniOverHere Jan 28 '25

As a VFX artist, I’ll note:

Sometimes exaggerations in single frames actually makes the end product look better.

If folks did this with Into The Spiderverse, they could claim the animation is slop - just because certain frames are wonky on purpose for implied motion.

6

u/JediJones77 Jan 28 '25

Think he’ll do a Krypto GoPro scene? 🐶

4

u/Horror_Campaign9418 Jan 28 '25

Guaranteed.

3

u/JediJones77 Jan 28 '25

Maybe the dragon is Krypto mutated from yellow kryptonite.

5

u/WilliamMcCarty Jan 28 '25

That's too bad. At least they'd have an excuse.

11

u/ed_ostmann Jan 28 '25

Sadly. Needed it a bit in the Skarsgard shot.

AI will dominate if real thing is not good enough for people. Otherwise i agree that this shot is weird. That said, trailers have shots that wont make a cut in final movie all the time..

14

u/First_Function9436 Jan 28 '25

I was there. None of it's CGI. They used this new technology that allows the actors to fly and perform all the stunts for real.

4

u/Calel07 Jan 28 '25

His face is real but that hair is CGI.

0

u/ProfessorEtc Jan 28 '25

The moustache is anti-CGI.

3

u/cosmic-ballet Jan 28 '25

Says who?

1

u/Calel07 Jan 28 '25

The turbulence of the hair is too repetitive and has little directional break up. His hairline and sideburns are full of thickness and there’s no skin poking through the roots.

Two odd things about this shot, it’s the lens and the transition from cgi hair to his face. Just look at the actor in any other shot. The hairline is different

5

u/cosmic-ballet Jan 28 '25

Sometimes things are a lot simpler than you think. Why would they put CGI hair on a man who already has hair? I am 100% certain they just have a fan blowing on his face to simulate flying, and that’s why his hair looks different.

1

u/sayan11apr Feb 01 '25

They do this all the time, especially in underwater and stylised slo-mo shots (Iris' hair and clothes were 100% CGI in ZSJL). If they blew such high speed wind onto David's face, we'd surely see ripples.

1

u/Calel07 Jan 29 '25

You would be very surprised what they replace. To me the hair looks odd. Lighting on set could be wrong, the look they shot on set they could decide they don’t like it in post production. It costs millions to re shoot all this stuff so they do it in post. Hair replacement is more common than you think.

VFX artists are amazing because they have to deal with bad direction and hopeless studios. People are so used to ‘bad’ cgi and call it out but alot of good cgi is hidden and you don’t even notice what they do. Go watch some breakdowns of impressive movies and see how far they go. I could be wrong for this shot but to say why would they replace the hair because CGI allows for creative freedom in post and directors like that option.

0

u/Total-Guest-4141 Jan 28 '25

Looks like a Face swap filter 🤣🤣🤣

21

u/Soft_House7669 Jan 27 '25

it's a weird shot, but it's also probably less than two seconds of the movie

-17

u/JRon21 Jan 27 '25

And that's supposed to be a good thing? CGI or not, it looks shit. Anybody who says otherwise is just coping hard. Like do people hate Snyder so much they'd take any garbage as long as there's no Snyder in it?

1

u/Agent_RubberDucky Jan 31 '25

I’d take a bad shot over an almost entirely bad movie, lol.

1

u/JRon21 Feb 01 '25

That's not even the question but go on, keep proving you have low standards.

16

u/wookiewin Jan 27 '25

If it doesn’t have any CGI then it needs it lol. That wide lens on his face doesn’t look good.

5

u/SecretRefrigerator4 Jan 27 '25

They used wide angle lens throughout the trailer.

The skin color doesn’t bother me at all, he looks like any other white boy including myself that lives in Kansas

0

3

u/Impossible-Bid-8187 Jan 27 '25

4

Obviously, it’s too soon to tell if this movie will have a disappointing box office, but as silly as it might sound, people like his parents and grandparents make up the bulk of the box office and definitely drive whether these movies are successful or not. These kinds of trailers definitely need to appeal to that demographic, not just a hard-core comic book fans who have been wanting a solo superman movie for years now.

2

u/fenixsplash Jan 27 '25

I think a lot of box office predictions have been based on the idea of a Top Gun Maverick type wave of nostalgia, yes. A four quadrant hit should interest people in their fifties like my parents.

3

u/Soft_House7669 Jan 27 '25

I think Top Gun Maverick worked because it was the same actor and it appealed to an older audience specifically. (older guy showing the kids that he's just better)

-1

u/Express-Act-3637 Jan 27 '25

Muted like everyone was in awe over how cool it was ?

8

u/4totheFlush Jan 27 '25

In no context does muted carry that connotation.

0

u/DukeOfLowerChelsea Jan 28 '25

He misheard, he thought you said Mewtwo

6

u/UnbuiltIkeaBookcase Jan 27 '25

This actually makes it worse to me lol

-17

u/rebel099 Jan 27 '25

So basically Gunn is saying that Corenswet's face is naturally messed up

5

u/Maleficent-Jello7279 Jan 27 '25

More like his face looks funny if you put a wide lens right up against it. Imo, even if it’s less realistic, I would much rather have his eyes facing in the same direction in the final movie then whatever is happening in this frame currently lol.

Did you read the post lmao. He says that the wide angled lens up close makes a face appear differently

0

u/nootropic_jeff Jan 27 '25

Despite not being one of the X-Men, I guess you could say his face is a little Uncanny.

9

u/sladeshied Jan 27 '25

The dude’s eyes look weird in ONE shot where he’s blasted by the wind, looks normal in the rest of the trailer, and you wanna say he’s naturally messed up? This is something I expect from a whiny 4 year old.

20

u/humansince1989 Jan 27 '25
  • Black Adam
  • Guardians 3
  • The Batman
  • Superman

How long until these guys understand that this is just a goofy, ugly shot?

2

u/Temporary_Cold_5142 Jan 28 '25 edited Jan 31 '25

Hell nah, that shot looked dope in Guardians (In The Batman looks fine but it doesn't stand out much). People just hate on it because they aren't acostumed to it, but it gave the scene a lot of motion and dynamism

2

u/harbourmonkey Jan 27 '25

Add Mean Girls (2024) to that list right now (skip to 2:53)

8

u/keithblsd Jan 27 '25

They don’t need to be so close! Have superman flying fantastically around without us having to stay 100% focused on him just the beautiful shot overall.

I think the fact that so many people are on the fence about this movie is alarming!

Normally by now it would be fans gushing over the smallest leak. Not nitpicking it for flaws.

What alternate timeline do you live in? Everything is nitpicked now

I’m just… so tired of seeing Hoult in every single thing under the sun.

Like what? He’s been in some good movies but he’s hardly a mainstay like the Rock etc.

Nosferatu, Juror #2, The Order, The Great, Renfield, The Menu, Those Who Wish Me Dead, The Banker, etc. Those are just his movies in the last five years that I’ve seen. I don’t even think he’s all that good of an actor. According to my Letterboxd, I’ve seen 33 movies that he’s been in just since the turn of the century. That’s a shit ton.

This is crazy hyperbole lol the world at large isn’t hype for this movie. That’s not me being a hater or me nitpicking, if I go outside and ask 10 random people if they know that a new superman movie was coming out I guarantee you that most if not all of them would say no. Maybe when the marketing starts to pick up a little bit that’ll change, but you can’t take YouTube views and Reddit discourse as evidence of the world at large being excited for this movie. People like us are in the minority, especially when it comes to who contributes to the movie making money.

Is this not true for any film that is 6 months away? The hype is as present as anyone can hope for right now.

Edit: Come Superbowl time it'll be interesting to see reactions from some more "normal folks"

Exactly. Which is why I brought up the fact that once marketing picks up we’ll have a better idea of if regular people beyond the nerd space are excited for the movie.

I agree, the superbowl and subsequent tv spots that follow should put a lot more eyes on this thing, on top of whatever reviews we see
