Zach and James are friends and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that

u/Weird-Wrap5836 Feb 20 '25

they did their first movie togther. gunn wrote it and snyder directer. hopefully this stop each side of the fandom from being so toxic

222

u/Arshille Feb 20 '25

Each side has known they’ve been friends. Some people just like being angry and spreading that hate and anger, for whatever reason

83

u/Pod-Bay-Doors Feb 20 '25

As someone who is literally on both sides of the Fandom , (I quite like Zacks DC films) but also trust James Gunn since hes never give me a reason to think otherwise it really is irritating how much each side tend to go at each other.

Don't do that, man. Don't play that sides game. The unhinged vocal majority on the "other side" was absolutely vile to Snyder after his child passed. So no. It's not just "one side." Some people just suck.

11

u/omegaman101 Feb 20 '25

That's really horrendous. I'm not a fan of Synder by any means though I did enjoy his cut of JL and Twilight of the God's. But regardless of that losing your daughter to suicide must be a insurmountable ill and people making fun of that really is sickening.

Every time I see Snyder mentioned, it's always toxic Gunn fans trashing him. Snyder gets mentioned unprompted in nearly every post on this sub and the other DC leak sub whether the post is about him or not. I see far more of that these days than the toxic SnyderBros. Those are very few and far between from what I've seen in the last year or so.

8

u/khalip I Will Find Him! Feb 21 '25

In the first place the snyderbros emerged because saying you liked BvS in 2016 was basically giving a free pass to everyone on the internet to clown on you and your tastes

They are more on Twitter these days but yeah.

2

u/JonesMotherfucker69 Feb 21 '25

Good, they can stay there! I refuse to even visit that white supremacist cesspool these days.

2

u/Strong-Stretch95 Feb 22 '25

I feel like people forgot the director isn’t the only one making movies there’s also writers and the cast and crew.

I don't get it either. I grew up going into comic book shops and fans of all kinds all seemed to bond over their love of their favorite characters. There was none of the tribalism that rules the cinematic domain, today.

Something I've always loved about these beloved characters is that there are so many different takes on them from different writers and artists. Sure, we have our favorites, but the beauty of comics is that there will always be new takes and new material to consume.

7

u/CrusaderZero6 Feb 21 '25

The tribalism has been a huge part of and problem in comic book and comic book adjacent culture since the days of Stan Lee referring to the “Distinguished Competition” as “brand Echhh.”

It has been made intentionally worse by bad actors attempting to create wedge issues in western culture wherever possible.

8

u/Dabny_64 Feb 20 '25

It’s frustrating to see, especially when it overshadows the actual facts.

I'd actually love to see if they could work together like that again. It might be what makes people stop this pointless bickering online.

8

u/mrbrownvp Feb 20 '25

Probably either Zack writing something and Gunn directing or backwards. Gunn was always open to work with people from the DCEU. I dont know why people are so oblivious about this

Dawn of the Dead is also a good movie, and arguably combines the best elements of both filmakers.

Makes sense to me. It seems like they both love making super stylized comic book movies too.

56

u/ImGreat084 Feb 20 '25

I’ve said it before and ill say it again, Zack Snyder could definitely direct a good dc movie, he just needs writers

29

u/monkeygoneape Feb 20 '25

Ya like Man of Steel, and the directors cut of Watchmen.

10

u/MIAxPaperPlanes Feb 20 '25

Add 300 to the list. That works for him because it’s basically one long battle Plus “this is Spartaaaa!” Is iconic

20

u/ImGreat084 Feb 20 '25

Man of steel isn’t my ideal portrayal of superman, but I won’t deny it was great

12

u/NecessaryMagician150 Feb 20 '25

Yeah I have some issues with Snyders take on Superman BUT Man of Steel is a genuinely good movie imo. Critics missed the mark on that one.

3

u/Late_Sentence_1860 Feb 21 '25

Regardless, it still has above 7.0 IMDB score

Bodes well this could happen one day. I think given the right property like The Authority or Question he could make a great film

11

u/fiero-fire Feb 20 '25

Zach gets a dogged for being a subpar writer but I don't think he's a bad dude. I think he'd be a super interesting person to talk to about film

3

u/Murasasme Feb 21 '25

If anything, get him to direct action sequences. Like you said, his writing sucks but the man knows how to make cool action shots. Superman vs all the kryptonians in Man of Steel is the best representation of super powered people going at it on film.

I don’t know if this will fall on blind eyes, but here goes.

Back in the 2019-2020 (American) election season, I stumbled across a few comments buried in a certain subreddit (I’ll leave the name out). It wasn’t just any comments, these were confessions. A group of Redditors openly admitted they had 5 to 10 burner accounts each, posing as the "opposing side" just to manipulate the narrative.

They weren’t interested in debating. They were proudly engineering perception.

That moment changed how I see online discourse forever.

Now, whenever I come across extreme takes, hyper-sensationalized viewpoints, or "organic" outrage on platforms where anonymity is king, I hesitate. Because I know real people don’t talk like that. It’s most likely manufactured and orchestrated. And yet, the cycle feeds itself.

Even big YouTubers and reactors are just responding to what they see online, which means they’re reacting to reactions of reactions. And suddenly, we’re all debating ghosts in a hall of mirrors.

This doesn’t just apply to politics. It’s the same game, whether it’s the Snyderverse debate, culture wars, or any trending topic that keeps people at each other’s throats. The most triggering voices might not even be real. And that’s wild to think about.

What are you on about? He likes superheroes, but he’s more interested in trying to ask the “why” of them and say something about them and the human condition than just make empty action comedies.

Man of Steel is a superhero movie centered on a good person. Literally the first thing we see Clark Kent do is rescue people on a burning oil rig who had been written off as good as dead. Without hesitation or thought for what it would mean for him. We see him walk away from a fight, rather than abuse his powers on someone weaker. When Lois tells him he could die stopping the World Engine, he tells her he won’t let that stop him from trying. Literally everything Superman does in Sndyer’s films is altruistic and good because it’s the right thing to do.

BvS had a Batman that had fallen, but by the end he realized the error of his ways and vowed to be better.

ZSJL is about superheroes coming together for the greeter good to save the world.

His movies are quite literally about superheroes doing good.

Zack and James are probably reading the comments on Twitter and laughing their asses off aa we speak😂

93

u/Broqpace Feb 20 '25

They probably aren’t. I assume they’d have better things to do.

61

u/Qwer925 Feb 20 '25

Idk they both are really fond of social media lol

3

u/Xsphyre Feb 21 '25

Unsure about James Gunn but as I've watched Zack Snyder on quite a few podcasts, he doesn't frequent social media at all except his Vero. Sometimes his son shows him memes and stuff of him that he finds funny.

In case Zack Snyder reads this, I'll always be a fan. Just because he took inspiration for the man of steel fight from my favorite anime, Birdy the Mighty

3

u/Sea_Aspect1010 Feb 21 '25

Yeah That was such an obscure anime to take inspiration from

Its actually very cool of Snyder to have done that. I loved both the OVA and the anime back then.

The sweaties are going to go wild when they see this one.

25

u/Goosojuice Feb 20 '25

Sweatie?

53

u/Georgeorgiorgio Feb 20 '25

It was a title that the late Jon Schnepp gave to the comic book community.

24

u/Background-Ninja-550 Feb 20 '25

What a cool dude Schnepp seemed to be. Loved listening to him talk about comics and movies, he had so much knowledge and such a passion. I really wish he could have seen all the comicbook movies that has come out since his passing. Imagine him seeing Nick Cage's Superman (CGI I know) cameo in The Flash for instance. And I know he loved Fantastic 4, so really sad he didn't get to see that one (the one coming in a few months) in particular.

Rest in piece, King of sweaties.

9

u/Georgeorgiorgio Feb 20 '25

Listening to his episodes on collider was peak comic book fandom. So damn passionate and funny.

11

u/bruc3kent Feb 20 '25

3

u/BarthRevan Feb 20 '25

RIP that absolute King of the Sweaties.

6

u/matticans7pointO The Red Capes Are Coming! Feb 20 '25

I don't expect it to happen and I'm not asking for it but I would 100% be down for a movie written and produced by Gunn and directed by Snyder. Full Fat Videos mentioned the idea and I think it would make for a good combination. Booster Gold or a New Gods movie would be a fun fit with that pair.

u/SimpleSink6563 Feb 20 '25

I will never understand why some fans on social media insist they hate each other because they make superhero movies with different tones.

Like do they think creatives are only ever friends with other creatives who make the exact same sort of art as them?

44

u/mrbrownvp Feb 20 '25

Same thing with Marvel vs. DC, they always wish each other well and get excited about each other's new projects. But people actually think that there is some kind of pseudo-rivalry. Like they have been sharing creative back and forth since the comics. They may be competitors, but they know they need each other. The so-called "rivalry" is mostly a fan-driven narrative.

→ More replies (3)

17

u/comineeyeaha Feb 21 '25

It’s absurd, because James Gunn literally wrote the screenplay for Zack Snyder’s first movie, Dawn of the Dead. They’re clearly long time friends.

3

u/nightcitytrashcan Feb 21 '25

It's like back in the day when John Milius was the only conservative guy in a friend group that consisted of him George Lucas, Martin Scorsese, Brian DePalma and Steven Spielberg. Try to imagine the discussions among these guys.

3

u/Jessency Feb 21 '25

Reminds me of that time Steven Spielberg wrote a very kind congratulatory letter to George Lucas after Star Wars beat Jaws.

If that were today, people would quickly go online and go "Jaws sucks! George Lucas humiliated Spielberg at the box office!" or something like that.

Though there's a great chance there were people who did think that. They just didn't have the internet then to share that opinion.

84

u/Aidyn_the_Grey Feb 20 '25

Man of Steel is so underrated. It really does suck that the DCEU never really had room to grow organically.

46

u/ItsMeBenedickArnold Feb 20 '25

That movie deserved its own sequel and Ben Affleck deserved a solo movie before they made BvS or Justice League.

19

u/gamepig31 Feb 20 '25

Absolutely. If WB hadn't rushed it, the DCEU would have been so much better.

11

u/BLueSkYBrOwnPotaTo Feb 20 '25

I fucking love Zack Snyder. Sure, he might not always make the best movies and his vision can be a little grandiose, but the man's been through the ringer. There's a genuine sadness and look of emptiness in his eyes sometimes, and I think this photo captures that. He's dealt with so much personal pain whilst at the height of his career and yet he still turns up to give his all on passion projects. The man loves cinema and works his arse off to try and please his fans. The end product may not always be perfect, but he seems like a genuinely good bloke. Love to Zack (and James Gunn who is also fucking awesome).

2

u/flashrex777 Feb 23 '25

Yeah, I lost a family member to suicide once too and it’s not pretty. As a person, I fucking love him and Ive loved every single DC movie he’s made from Man of Steel to BvS: Extended Cut to ZSJL.

30

u/TheFastestKnight Feb 20 '25

Somewhere, the worst person you know is getting real mad.

But this is actually wholesome AF.

20

u/jdyake Feb 20 '25

His recent films haven’t been the best but I’d be down for a Zack Snyder film in the DCU

12

u/CHEEZYSPAM Feb 20 '25

I feel like visually all his movies are appealing and has this epic, grandiose beauty to them.

However. when he's writing original scripts and then puts those to screen, it seems to be his weakness (Sucker Punch, Rebel Moon, his 'Army of the Dead' flicks).

If it's an established property where the IP is already established, or he's filming someone else's story? I think that is where he really shines (Dawn, 300, Watchmen and of course his DC trilogy). Those tend to be commercially successful.

If I were him, I'd stick to known properties and directing other writer's work.
Leave the original ideas in a box... There's not a great track record there.

7

u/ThomasG_1007 Feb 20 '25

While I wouldn’t want him doing DCU Batman I think he would kill a Dark Knight Returns movie. Ik BVS is already partially that but a faithful one would rule

5

u/gamepig31 Feb 20 '25

He himself said that in some interview once. Can't remember where tho. But it'd be definitely interesting.

4

u/ThomasG_1007 Feb 20 '25

I remember that that’s right. I think he also said he wanted to do a daredevil/Elektra movie in that interview. Hoping that one doesn’t come true lol

8

u/YorkshireFudding Feb 20 '25

I hope once the toxicity from certain people has died down, that Snyder gets a chance to direct something for DC again. There's definitely a project for him further down the line.

11

u/KingCodester111 Feb 20 '25

2 goats, love to see it.

7

u/SkkAZ96 Feb 20 '25

Pop culture fandoms are like sports hooligans. The supporters go hard in their tribalism, stirring up rivalries and conflict between their "teams" and go apeshit crazy at each other. Meanwhile, the actual athletes, actors, and directors are friends, go party, or hang out together because they're colleges and at one point or another may end up working in the same team/project.

Imagine if he's replacing Andy Muschietti with Zack Snyder for the DCU Batman movie! (because let's be real, Muschietti isn't directing it)

29

u/Maleficent_Problem_9 Feb 20 '25

As long as he does not mainly write the movie i'll prefer him over anyone to direct it . The warehouse scene in bvs is genuinely the best batman live action sequence ever.

29

u/BatmanNewsChris Batman Feb 20 '25

Yeah, there's no way he'd be writing. If you pair Snyder's directing with a James Gunn approved script, it's the best of both worlds IMO.

I think that might be something and with Studio interference down to Gunn that could be pretty kickass. Not going to be Afleck but still a beefy Batman would be great to see against a formidable Rouges gallery that uses acid squirting flowers and wind up exploding penguins

3

u/Sad-Assistance-8039 Feb 20 '25

Honestly, I like that idea. Snyder is much better choice for Batman than Muschietti. And I guess after the failure of Rebel Moon, he could also use a smaller project from a great writer, like Clayface.

3

u/Necessary-Layer5871 Feb 20 '25

6

u/darthcjd Feb 20 '25

With a good script, which James could provide, Zack could direct a good movie for the new DCU. It would be the best of both worlds. Give him something action-packed and pulpy to suit his style. My dream would be something like The Authority. Or Lobo. I could even see a Snyder Green Arrow going crazy with slow mow arrow shots and acrobatics. Lots of possibilities.

u/Negative-Country-600 Feb 20 '25

I watched his animated flick Owls of Ga'hoole a few weeks ago. Hadn't seen it before. And it was REALLY good. You can see how it was a precursor to him doing Man of Steel in so many ways, especially with the action and flying sequences. There's no denying his contributions to cinema as a visualist who has created some of the most memorable images in recent history. I think Justice League is one of his best movies because he's just taking a script written by an Oscar winner and bringing it to life. You get good shit when that's the case. When he's writing his own thing, well then it tends to not work.

6

u/pipboy_warrior Feb 20 '25

Nope, visuals are something Snyder does well at. It's everything else that is arguably weaker. It's why I'd like to see him doing something like a Dragon Ball Z movie.

5

u/Odd_Advance_6438 Feb 20 '25

While the opportunity presents itself, I’d like to mention something I’ve noticed from talking with people that have worked with Snyder and Gunn. I haven’t, but I’ve talked with crew who have

They described both as incredibly nice, hard working, and passionate people. However, something that was kind of interesting is that both of them are kind of the opposites of how people see their movies. Gunns known for making lighter hearted movies while Snyder makes darker stuff, but from what I’ve been told, Snyder was actually more light hearted and prone to cracking jokes, while Gunn was a little more serious and focused.

That’s not to say Gunn was too serious, or Snyder was unprofessional, that’s just the vibe they described. Snyder sounded kind of quirky, but the good kind of quirky. They mentioned he would usually ride a skateboard or bike around set, and there’s actually a funny story of his wife getting mad at him for playing too much Fortnite, and she told him to do pottery or something instead.

They said that Gunn was still a very friendly guy, just that sometimes Marvel would put him in stressful positions that made him a little more serious

8

u/Technical_Drawing838 Feb 20 '25

You can see this in interviews with Snyder. He's almost always smiling. He's upbeat and positive and enthusiastic. And he cracks a lot of jokes. He had the Russo brothers laughing a number of times.

u/Technical_Drawing838 Feb 20 '25

I've been saying for awhile that since James Gunn and Zack Snyder are friends, hopefully James Gunn will at some point restore the Snyderverse as an Elseworlds series.

The hopeful side of me sees this as a step in that direction. The cynical side of me sees this as James Gunn hoping to get more Snyder fans on his side with no intention of ever restoring the Snyderverse.

And I understand it could be neither. It could be just two friends getting together and hanging out (However, it seems very unlikely that they wouldn't at least discuss the possibility of restoring the Snyderverse).

7

u/ShadowExtinkt Feb 20 '25

I’m fully aware it will never happen and had no chance of happening with the public/reddit backlash, but they should’ve just let Snyder’s plan play out. It would’ve been done by now and they could just reboot like they did anyway afterwards.

6

u/gamepig31 Feb 20 '25

Agreed. But now it's probably way to late. We'll never get to see the Snyderverse ever aging, half of the original cast is gone and moved on. That's the sad truth

i'll be quite honest, i always wished that zack would stick around dc for the sake of cinematography. regardless of his writing, (and color grading for many), the shots for his films look like absolute spectacles.

u/NecessaryMagician150 Feb 20 '25

Man, I know the actual plot of the movies would have been divisive/all over the place, but on a purely VISUAL level, I cant even imagine how epic Snyder's Justice League 3 would have looked with the League taking on Darkseid. Henry Cavill's Superman fighting Darkseid in a final confrontation directed by Snyder??? Sign me the fuck up. Story be damned! Lol

u/Dr-Saltalamacchia Feb 20 '25

TIL that the adjective consummate is VERY different than the verb consummate

3

u/sladeshied Feb 20 '25

He could have used a better word than “consummate” there.

IMO I didnt really know either of them until Dawn of the Dead remake blew me away. It makes sense that they are friends just based on how that movie really got their name out there. 300 obviously was Zack Snyders big one but other than Dawn of the Dead i never really paid attention to gunn till guardians.

3

u/monkeygoneape Feb 20 '25

Would love to see the two collaborate together again, the solid character writing of Gunn and the over the top visuals of a Synder movie

3

u/Astrnonaut Feb 20 '25

Meanwhile r/superman : “B-BUT THE SHORTS!’!”

3

u/antiaust Feb 20 '25

I wish Zack could take over The Authority. Just make it something dark, bloody, and messed up—like the Suicide Squad without the humor lol

3

u/ReturnInRed Feb 20 '25

As excited as I am for the DCU, I would be down for a closing chapter to Snyder's Justice League saga. Maybe something like a 3-4 episode Max series. If a good chunk of it is set on an Apokolips ravaged earth, it would likely be drastically different from a DCU Justice League theatrical film. The different platforms, tones, and casts, would probably be enough to keep them separate in the minds of audiences. Gunn said he wants Elseworlds after all.

3

u/Substantial-Way1458 Feb 20 '25

Thats so cool. Zack is a good director.

3

u/pleasebeherenow Feb 20 '25

Snyder getting a directing gig in the DCU would be epic. He had great ideas, but the studio tore his productions apart.

3

u/MoneyMakingMitch1 Feb 21 '25

The GOAT Snyder.

3

u/Successful_Buddy513 Feb 21 '25

Can Zack direct the new Batman movie for the DCU please? Sorry Andy, we can give you another project down the road.

3

u/ontheedgeofinsanity9 Feb 21 '25

Even on IGN when Gunn was promoting Brightburn he was still appreciative of Snyder and I don't think Snyder has said anything bad about Gunn too.

3

u/harmonic_spectre Feb 21 '25

I am sure the response to this was super normal and level-headed

3

u/CommanderMaxil Feb 21 '25

What I wouldn’t give to have them team up on a DC movie, Gunn writing and Snyder directing

4

u/amerigorockefeller Feb 20 '25

Didn’t know Snyder was a short king

3

u/Outside_Flower4837 Feb 20 '25

James wrote Zack's Dawn of the Dead. Yes, they are friends.

Both Gunn fans and Synderfans are equally bad, neither are normal

3

u/mrbrownvp Feb 20 '25

Glad someone agreeing. I think that they cant get over the fact that we can enjoy the new while also enjoying the past. Good thing this is most people and Internet is not really the real world

…to discuss Man of Steel 2! Or another DC movie.

2

u/No_Flower_1424 Feb 20 '25

I'm sure people are going to be absolutely normal about this

2

u/LunchMasterFlex Feb 20 '25

You can't convince me that's not Adam Savage and Steve Carrell.

2

u/Cal_Takes_Els Feb 20 '25

I love both of their movies.

2

u/Zawrid Feb 20 '25

Hopefully in 10 years maybe we get a closure to snyders knightmare world. Some injustice stuff, like gunss universe will meet with cavils superman regime. Like the game/comics

2

u/Suffering-Servant Feb 21 '25

I’d love to see a DC movie with these two working on it.

2

u/throwawayxyz50 Feb 21 '25

They did the Dawn of the Dead remake together, I believe. I have watched all their movies since then.

2

u/Personal_Amoeba7646 Feb 21 '25

Ahh that’s great! I didn’t know they were friends!

2

u/trakrad99 Feb 21 '25

I wonder if he showed Zack the current cut of Superman?

2

u/Jerry_0boy Feb 21 '25

Nobody will ever make me hate either one of them.

2

u/dtisme53 Feb 21 '25

I will always maintain that if you give Zack a good script and a producer who knows how to rein him in he could make a hit again.

2

u/amarodelaficioanado Feb 21 '25

Love defeats hate. That's what this world needs!!!

2

u/SlickGodKing Feb 21 '25

Turn Up 🤙🏾

2

u/BloodyWolfx8 Feb 21 '25

I say let Zack help with some storytelling for some characters that fit his style or let him have a hand in the DC elseworlds stuff

2

u/DMinaya5 Feb 21 '25

People on the Internet are so weird about these two being friends.

Dawn of the Dead helped catapult both of their careers and they have each other to thank for that, I'm sure Snyder is rooting for Gunn to succeed.

2

u/DrakeScoffield Feb 21 '25

Hear me out.. what if ...what if Zack was approached for a project!! Oh God, please make that happen. Any project for that matter...

2

u/CapertheFox1 Feb 21 '25

They are both talented directors and nothing wrong with being a fan of both of these people.

Just goes to show we're not enemies. We all want what's best for DC and cinema as a whole. Even if we have different ideas of what that means!

2

u/frostyturd Feb 21 '25

So many virgins are beyond upset about this picture.

2

u/SilverPanda99060 Feb 21 '25

Ima huge fan of the Snyderverse, even though I was disappointed on the way it ended, I'm still very much just as hyped for James Gunn DCU. Cannot wait for the new Superman movie.

2

u/Deep_Throattt Feb 21 '25

It'd be crazy if zack snyder is back for the DCU.

2

u/Better_Ad9173 Feb 21 '25

JL 2-3 in 2032

2

u/T-rune Feb 22 '25

The fact they’re freinds but there fandoms are at each other’s throats is really funny to me

2

u/HalTalloak Feb 22 '25

Great dudes

2

u/obysalad Feb 20 '25

Now kiss! 💋
