I really hope supergirl movie to be good. woman of tomorrow has awesome story and art.

35

u/FlatulentSon 6d ago

Maybe it's a little too derivative of True Grit, honestly, it's practically a scifi remake. But a great one, the art is beautiful.

19

u/JulesDescotte 6d ago edited 6d ago

Hard agree. I really liked it, but for the first half of it I couldn't shake off the 'uh, so True Grit in space?' feeling. I hope they manage to pull it off. I'm curious as to what role Lobo will play on it. I assume it'll be related to the mercenaries that show up at the end.

10

u/FlatulentSon 6d ago

For that reason, this is one adaptation where i think that changes are welcome.

2

u/No_Read_5062 5d ago

i think they doing some changes, thats why Lobo will appear in the movie.

1

u/Happy_Philosopher608 4d ago

Never read it but sounds awesome!

1

u/JulesDescotte 4d ago

True Grit is a novel indeed, but I must admit I've never read. There is a 1969 western film based on it. I haven't watched that either. What I did watch though is the excellent 2010 adaptation by the Coen brothers. Highly recommended.

1

u/Happy_Philosopher608 2d ago

Yh the 2010 remake was a rare remake done right!

5

u/AssCrackBanditHunter 5d ago

I read a Venom comic once and it was the coolest thing ever. Venom was in the Arctic, hitched a ride on a husky, then got into an Arctic research lab where he started taking over the scientists and driving them mad with paranoia...

Imagine my surprise when 15 years later I finally watched "The Thing". Sometimes the best comics are shamelessly stolen lol

4

u/Remarkable-Papaya-59 5d ago

I really doubt many people made that comparison lol.

56

u/BalladOfBetaRayBill 6d ago

Still so excited at how direct this adaptation seems to be, like having Ruthye and Krem of the Yellow Hills is so fucking baller because those are not very merchandisable characters.

20

u/FortLoolz 6d ago edited 6d ago

One of the rare examples of a live action CBM adapting one specific comic book story. And it's the fastest comic book to be adapted for the big screen

10

u/BalladOfBetaRayBill 6d ago

I think there was a typo and I didn’t quite catch your meaning here

4

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

Yep, thanks, just fixed it

7

u/BalladOfBetaRayBill 6d ago

Ah yes! So excited for this and I hope it’s a sign of more of these- treating a Comic Book movie like you’re adapting a novel is such a good idea imo.

So they’re still sticking with next June? That month is stacked at the moment (Masters of the Universe, Steven Spielberg, Scary Movie 6, and Toy Story 5) and not to mention that it also has to deal with a crowded July as well.

I think if it’s done on time, it could move up earlier like around April or March.

EDIT: Or you know what? Scratch that. August would be best for it. Nothing too big comes out that month with only Insidious 6 at the moment.

58

u/cali4481 6d ago

Movies that will hit theaters right around Supergirl's June 26th release date.

  • June 19th - Toy Story 5
  • June 26th - Supergirl
  • July 1st - Minions 3
  • July 10th - Moana (live action)
  • July 17th - The Odssey

If we look at the box office history of the franchises and or directors that Supergirl will have to be fighting with in theaters next summer.

  • Toy Story 4 grossed 1.073 billion in 2019
  • Minions 2 grossed 940 million in 2022
  • Moana 2 grossed 1.059 billion in 2024
  • Nolan's last blockbuster grossed 975 million in 2023

I'm honestly afraid Supergirl will be overshadowed in more ways than one if it sticks to its June 2026 release date.

August I think is a lot better month as it's relatively open as there isn't a big movie scheduled to open in theaters right now.

Also the two biggest August opening weekends are comic book movies.

  • Guardians (2014) - 94.3 million
  • Suicide Squad (2016) - 133.5 million

So comic book tent pole movies to start a franchise have done very well financially at the box office in August if we look at the past ten years.

In my opinion it makes sense to move Supergirl to August.

16

u/InjusticeSGmain 6d ago

Live Action Moana isn't likely to do near as well as the animated movie. People weren't too happy with Moana 2, and The Rock's only remaining fans are middle aged moms.

Minions are a tired trope people have been exponentially losing interest in.

Toy Story is a legit threat, and Nolan's movies rightfully have an automatic fanbase.

But if Superman does well, this is DC. It's fun to poke jokes at, but it's still a juggernaut studio with a good director and good casting behind it. Supergirl herself has fans, between her show, comics, and animated appearances. Milly Alcock is a celebrated alumni from a Game of Thrones spin-off.

7

u/New-Benefit-1362 6d ago

‘Minions are a tired trope people have been exponentially losing interest in’

Despicable Me 4 released last year and made $914mil, Minions 2 released in 2022 and made $940mil. In fact, every release in the franchise since the original film has made $900mil+. Just admit you’re old bro, minions are still huge.

-8

u/InjusticeSGmain 6d ago

I'm fresh out of high school brother, Minions are shit

5

u/New-Benefit-1362 5d ago

Numbers say otherwise, just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean they aren’t widely popular and profitable.

That’s like me saying Ariana Grande is a flop because I don’t like her music.

5

u/Ferbtastic 6d ago

Id bet anything Moana live action passes $1mil. Everyone 8yo I know has that movie on their radar and it is the only movie on their radar.

13

u/johnotopia 6d ago

I too will bet that it will pass 1 mil

8

u/Ferbtastic 6d ago

Haha 1bil*

27

u/can_a_dude_a_taco 6d ago

Trust me, these movies aren’t really done early, if they said next June that’s when it is

1

u/bjeebus 6d ago

They aren't done early. If they said next June there's every chance they mean October.

8

u/Blue_Robin_04 6d ago

r/BoxOffice is leaking.

4

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

Well what he said was right

7

u/YControhl 6d ago

No, don't move it earlier. Then we have CGI disasters like The Flash or Black Adam

9

u/fuzzyfoot88 6d ago

July of this year is also stacked…and that’s when Superman opens.

7

u/ImmortalZucc2020 6d ago

There’s a bigger difference between Superman opening against Jurassic World (which have dropped $300 million with each installment) and F4 (in which none of their films have even crossed $400 million WW, outgrossed by almost every Superman film) and Supergirl, a relatively untested character, opening against Toy Story 5, Minions 3, Moana, and Nolan.

However, I do like that it’s sticking to June and shows DC has the upmost faith in it to be a hit (or at least be able to weather the storm).

3

u/TigerGroundbreaking 6d ago

None of those fantastic four movies were in the mcu.

5

u/ImmortalZucc2020 6d ago

Oh yeah, I’m not saying it’s gonna flop. But I don’t get this narrative that F4 is some “Superman killer” when, historically, they’ve never been all that popular and especially not compared to Superman.

It’s going to be a success, people are excited to see the F4, but I stand by Superman ultimately coming out on top here.

0

u/bigdonnie76 6d ago

F4 is going to do insane numbers. Especially after the cast announcement for Doomsday next year

2

u/Wooden_Challenge2951 5d ago

I do like that it’s sticking to June and shows DC has the upmost faith in it to be a hit

Could be a marketing trick too I suspect. They say June to instill the same confidence in the audience, and then maybe push back if needed.

27

u/RonburgundyZ 6d ago

I feel bad for all those movies then

5

u/Latereviews2 6d ago

Following the Superman 2025 tradition

2

u/CasualRead_43 6d ago

No chance they move it earlier. I mean this year Superman is up with fantastic 4 and Jurassic park.

2

u/AUnknownVariable 6d ago

Masters of the Universe? Like He-Man? We're getting a He-Man movie?!?!?

2

u/Bushwhacker59 6d ago

Yeahh I believe they've released some of the cast already as well.

2

u/Captain_Waffle 6d ago

Who would you guess is playing Skeletor?

2

u/AUnknownVariable 5d ago

Bruh. You know what, maybe he'll surprise me. Funnily the things I've cared about that he's been in haven't been too great😭.

6

u/iboneKlareneG 6d ago edited 6d ago

Masters of the Universe, Steven Spielberg, Scary Movie 6, and Toy Story 5

He-Man is a franchise for 40 year old people, and i highly doubt it can successfully make the jump from TV to Cinema. Steven Spielbergs last few movies were box office flops, Scary Movie 6 most likely won't be good. Toy Story 5 is even more unnecessary than 4 (will probably still be successfull). I'd say Supergirl will most likely be the biggest movie for that timeframe.

11

u/Lebigmacca 6d ago

Toy Story’s gonna make close to a billion easily

4

u/iboneKlareneG 6d ago

Agreed. But tbf, it has a different audience.

2

u/SaulPepper 5d ago

is Supergirl PG-13?

2

u/iboneKlareneG 5d ago

Most likely

-2

u/HonestDragonfruit134 6d ago

No

5

u/Lebigmacca 6d ago

Toy Story 4 made a billion. Inside out 2 just made a billion. Toy Story 5 will be big

2

u/HonestDragonfruit134 5d ago

Not that big of a

4

u/CosmicBonobo 6d ago

It's Toy Story. A franchise that literally shits pound notes.

0

u/HonestDragonfruit134 5d ago

Meh I don’t think it’ll do that good

2

u/TigerGroundbreaking 6d ago

Toy story 4 was very good imo, and still made money. Toy story 5 will undoubtedly make a lot of money.

3

u/Daimakku1 6d ago

The only real threat to Supergirl I see here is Toy Story 5. The other ones will have to move because of Supergirl.

5

u/AnxiousNPantsless 6d ago

You're nuts lol. Minions and Moana are the TWO biggest family franchises right now and it's Chris Nolan

3

u/Verystrangeperson 6d ago

Bro you don't want to go against Nolan

20

u/unknownplayer4227 6d ago

Its hard to believe this movie will come out in a year when batman 2 comes out in a few..

41

u/Fallen_Angel_1979 6d ago

She started her homework :)

16

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

They were reported as halfway finished filming recently

24

u/montybo2 6d ago

If any of you havent read Woman of Tomorrow do yourself a favor and go read it. Its so good and its beautiful.

14

u/Karma_code_ 6d ago

The fact that we are getting not one but TWO movies with Krypto is so wild, I love it.

3

u/ImmortalZucc2020 6d ago

Not to mention a possible video game

2

u/Top_Star_3897 6d ago

Why not give Streaky to Supergirl?

1

u/Randomfella3 4d ago

I need me a super pets TV series lol

-4

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

Well, don't expect a masterpiece, but it has some outstanding moments for sure

6

u/seriousFelix 6d ago

I first saw her in an Australian series called Upright

Shes a great actress

5

u/xaaar 6d ago

Is that the comic where she's on the space train?

13

u/[deleted] 6d ago

Is this her first role since HOTd?

16

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

No, she's also in 'Sirens' that is supposed to come out this year

9

u/[deleted] 6d ago

Joined by inter-galactic super hero Kevin Bacon I see!

4

u/TargaryenKnight 6d ago

What’s that about

7

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

4

u/TargaryenKnight 6d ago

Ohhhhh that one I saw a trailer for it a while ago. Just sexualizing my girl /:

21

u/Bey_Storm 6d ago

She better actually read that because that comic is really good.

Also, does anyone else feel like in terms of major female DC characters, Supergirl is on a higher rung than Wonder Woman for Gunn? At least for now?

16

u/JamesD-TV 6d ago

Supergirl does have the name recognition of Wonder Woman, except nobody REALLY knows anything about Kara Zor-el. I mean same with Wonder Woman to a general audience, but Supergirl is ubiquitous as a character. I’m thinking how no matter what Supergirl is one of the only female superhero costumes you’ll consistently see, I think using that recognizability is smart

10

u/TheNextWords 6d ago

I think its because WW 1 and Aquaman 1 were the only real unanimous and box office success’s from the snyderverse. The others like BVS and Snyder cut are at least controversial. Probably gonna wait to introduce both of them because it might look bad if a new WW gets worse ratings and less money than the one from only a decade ago.

8

u/brother_of_menelaus 6d ago

Not only that but I think it’s a concerted effort to build it out slowly; they’re starting with Superman because you kinda have to, it’s Superman. I think it would be difficult to get everyone to buy in to the new DC direction if they just said “okay you know all those movies you guys hated? Well we’re making them again but better this time.” Superman and Batman will put butts in seats regardless, but Gunn has to earn back the trust of the more casual audience first before they’re gonna be willing to shell out money on properties that were recently not very good.

5

u/Vinnie_Vegas 6d ago

I think there's a logical reason to hold back on Wonder Woman too, given that Themyscira is a secret island the world is not aware of, so you can hold back on her introduction as long as you want, logically.

It's a solve to a problem that the MCU is currently having to go to interdimensional travel to explain about introducing the X-Men and Fantastic 4 - Why would they have not been there until now?

Whereas Wonder Woman can have whole adventures within Themyscira and mythical lands without ever crossing over to the world of man, and be introduced later without it needing to be explained.

5

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

That's because WW is currently a bit controversial due to WW84

15

u/M4K4SURO 6d ago

What page does she have open? I know someone can figure it out.

5

u/KindsofKindness 6d ago

I assume this is on set? It looks like a trailer. Love the hair 🥹.

25

u/sworedmagic 6d ago

She really does have the look

16

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

She does look like Milly Alcock, that's for sure

16

u/XXAzeritsXx I like those shoes 6d ago

She looks like she could be related to Will Poulter

2

u/Free_Possession_4482 6d ago

I honestly thought it was him in the thumbnail.

1

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

Will is English, and she is an Aussie, hence the similar phenotype

2

u/Mintylorian 6d ago

Australian here. As one of Them People, can confirm We All Look The Same.

3

u/azeottaff 5d ago

Good luck to you Will Poulter!

3

u/Charming-Damage-8761 5d ago

Is she really a fan or did they shove the book in her face and told her to pretend to read it? Lol. This looks like a gimmick photo for us to like her.

8

u/rainorshinedogs 6d ago

I'm sure gunn is having fun watching the try-hard keyboard warriors implode on the internet, furious that a woman is a super person

10

u/Kaladin_98 6d ago

God damn, the plot doesn’t even matter, I’m sat in the theatre for this one 🥵

2

u/Coast_watcher The Joker 6d ago

Oh, they have a release date ?

2

u/BeachSloth_ 6d ago

June 2026

2

u/DescriptionSea8667 5d ago

Terrible pick but we will see

2

u/life0fjd_ 5d ago

Praying that the costume isn’t ass

2

u/JACEonFIre 5d ago

Wow casting a Original Comic book accurate looking character for once

2

u/Raj_Valiant3011 5d ago

I hope David has a meaningful cameo in the movie as a helpful older brother.

2

u/Accomplished-Sir-501 5d ago

wait i haven't read this comic yet but is the movie supposed to be a 1:1 adaptation of it?

2

u/Decent-Homework9306 5d ago

Danny Duncan is playing Supergirl??!?!

3

u/SimpleSink6563 6d ago

Can’t wait to see her in the costume!

5

u/MakaButterfly 6d ago

Toy Story is gonna be a difficult challenge for it

Move it till September or August is better

1

u/johnnyma45 6d ago

Absolute no shade on her but it’s an unfortunate name to read through quickly (at least to my 10-yr old humor)

4

u/iamadventurous 6d ago

Milky Acock?

2

u/EINFACH_NUR_DAEMLICH 6d ago

I'm cautiously looking forward to this.

4

u/Tomlyne 6d ago edited 6d ago

I am irrationally upset with the notion of reading a hardcover book with the jacket on. I can feel the creases and tears in my brain. I have the same edition of the book and I had to read it without the cover to feel better

2

u/Jay_R_Kay 6d ago

I imagine they put the cover on for the photo.

3

u/centuryofprogress 6d ago

They didn’t even put it on. She’s holding it in place.

2

u/LurkerTroll 6d ago

Is it just me or does she resemble ”you guys are getting paid?" dude

2

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

She does. Will is English, and she's an Aussie, so it checks out

1

u/WillingFly247 6d ago

Is that daenerys targeryan?

9

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

Rhaenyra, her ancestor

2

u/ParallelSkeleton 6d ago

She kinda looks like the kid from that "ya'll are getting paid?" meme from We're the Millers.

1

u/mousey_goldfish1 6d ago

This is a great casting choice. Milly will knock it out of the park. Really excited for this one.

3

u/Garthify 6d ago

Exciting to see him using Tom King as source material. I began to start thinking I misjudged him but then I remember those tweets and the 6th grade humor in The Suicide Squad…

5

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

I'm very meh on Gunn, especially on his latest works. But I'm thankful to him for greenlighting this project so fast. I don't know how much he was involved in making WoT, but they gathered a stellar team, better than the one for Gunn's own 'Superman,' I think.

1

u/FullFig3372 4d ago

This is my favorite casting of the new DCU so far! House of the Dragon didn’t have the air to it that it did when Milly Alcock’s character was present. Her arc isn’t too different from Kara’s in Woman of Tomorrow.

1

u/IWouldLikeAName 3d ago

I can't wait for this movie this, superman, and Batman actually have me so hyped to watch them. In general I'm looking forward to a lot of projects the vibe is just too good but superman will be the litmus test whether we like it or not.

1

u/ItsMrNoSmile 3d ago

My copy is the one with the cover of Kara holding the sword. I don't think I've seen this variant cover before.

1

u/OingoBoingo311 6d ago

these photos of actors reading comic books after they get announced for a superhero movie are lame

-6

u/Kookykrumbs 6d ago

She looks miscast

12

u/TigerFisher_ 6d ago

Same, I was hoping for Michelle Yeoh

8

u/lcpdpolice123 6d ago

I've never seen a more supergirl looking cast ever. She gives me the exact vibes of MAWS kara

3

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

I mean they were choosing between her, and Donnely. It's undeniable Alcock is the better actress, but Meg looks far more like a traditional Supergirl

7

u/lcpdpolice123 6d ago

I disagree. I don't get supergirl vibes when I stare at Meg Donnelly

4

u/pwninobrien 6d ago

James Gunn wanted Will Poulter but he was unavailable, so he chose the next best thing.

0

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

I unfortunately agree, especially for a story where Supergirl is supposed to be a parental/big sister figure, but Alcock is very charismatic. Time will tell whether she'll look believable in the role

0

u/proudfemfluid 3d ago

I agree, as a white person I've always imagined her to be a person of color

-2

u/omegaphallic 6d ago

Sorry, but I still laugh at the name Alcock. That is the best porn actress name ever.

-17

u/hongkongfooeee 6d ago

I look at her casting the same way I look at Bella Ramsey's casting in the last of us. It just don't fit, it looks forced.

4

u/TheAquamen 6d ago

What's being forced in either case?

2

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

Probably, as in, not the safer, and non-controversial choice

6

u/SimpleSink6563 6d ago

How is either one forced?

4

u/quickmathting 6d ago

Looks forced?

0

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

It likely means it's not a safer, less potentially controversial choice

4

u/TheAquamen 6d ago

What's controversial about Alcock's casting?

-2

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

A lot of people think she doesn't look like the traditional Supergirl, which is understandable. Milly Alcock is unconventionally attractive

7

u/TheAquamen 6d ago edited 5d ago

A skinny blonde woman with a pretty face is unconventionally attractive now? Have men wised up and finally embraced chubby brunettes?

2

u/regnimalia 5d ago

Well I have, but I'm old and know where the good stuff is.

1

u/FortLoolz 6d ago

I agree, especially for a mainline Supergirl, and not for an Elseworlds one, but at least Alcock can act. Time will tell whether her charisma will outshine other issues

These actors never read any comic books. Just for a photo

15

u/sketchbookhunt 6d ago

Most of the time, yes you’re probably correct but a few come to mind that are different. Henry Cavill has stated in interviews that his prior goal for Superman is to adapt the rebirth comics and has read multiple series since before he was Superman Jason Momoa said he was always trying to stay up to date on Aquaman and had an assistant who would bring him the tests issues as they come out. In the Aquaman movie behind the scenes, it’s not pointed out but you can see the rebirth run on his coffee table in Jason’s trailer Jon Bernthal got comic recommendations from comic stores in New York when he was casted as Punisher and said he read every single thing he got before he even shot a single scene of Daredevil season 2 Iman Vellani was a Ms Marvel fan before being casted and has read every appearance of the character along with being a fan of runs like the new avengers by Bendis

16

u/Defiant-Channel2324 6d ago edited 6d ago

Not in a forceful way, but I'm pretty sure Gunn probably has his actors read at least one comic book to grasp what their characters are based on.

14

u/OrgasmicOasis 6d ago

You're following them 24/7 and know this for sure? Or is this just negativity for the sake of being a Debby downer?

Yes

She definitely would have read woman of tomorrow

-13

u/SellOutrageous6539 6d ago

Yawn. Give me Lobo.

6

u/jo_evo24 6d ago

No, not "yawn." This is awesome. It's her movie, not Lobo's. From what Jason Momoa said, he's not in it for that long anyway
