It's not meaningless, stop saying stupid shit like that. If anyone stands up for what's right, it's a good thing these days. How entitled are you to think you deserve instant gratification?

40

u/iAkhilleus 3d ago

This is huge. Anyone who doesn't think so in the current political atmosphere is deluded.

21

u/Electrical_Welder205 3d ago

My guess is that Canadians don't feel it's meaningless.Ā

24

u/Global_Charge_4412 3d ago

Canadian here. definitely not meaningless to us.

12

u/manikwolf19 3d ago

It must be pretty crazy watching our country fight with itself from where you are

12

u/Global_Charge_4412 3d ago

I wish I could say yes but I figured something like this was coming to the west. I'm more surprised it hit you guys first. Demagogues rise when there's rampant inequality - and your country as well as mine has seen an increasingly shrinking middle class. this has left the poor angry, increasingly disenfranchised, distrustful of the establishment and looking for a reason to explain their situation. Enter the demagogue to rile the disaffected and voila, we're up shits creek without a paddle.

It is, it is also very sad and hugely disappointing. I like most Canadians felt like the USA was like a big brother, and it honestly feels like you just just realized the brother you idolized growing up is actually a racist mean sob, when you thought all along he was a strong, honest good guy. I just feel really let down. Probably naive on my part but itā€™s honestly just really sad watching it happen.

Americans love Canadians. With or without this display from Congress or Trump. It will be resolved. Families fight, but they love each other in the end.

May we kindly ask your forgiveness for our embarrassing guest? We will exclude him in our next outing. He insists on inviting himself for 2028, but thatā€™s simply a ploy to stay out of prison.

Iā€™m kind of dumb AF, so if I got this right. The GOO just said ā€œno we arenā€™t going to impose a tariff on Canadaā€? Can they do that to the rest of that dumb fucks idea on putting tariff on every country?

u/HDCL757 3d ago

Yeah. People can give 25 hour speeches in their favor and stupid bitches will just call it performative.Ā

11

u/Inept-One 3d ago edited 3d ago

Fillibustering is a useful tool for the party not in power, anyone says otherwise they're dumb as a rock.

Edit: I'm not saying he is fillibustering, im simply stating i hope he is able to keep this energy when it is important.

11

u/Genghis_Chong 3d ago

I think the dems should filibuster back to back, pass the mic like Wu Tang for a straight month

6

u/Inept-One 3d ago

Yeah when it matters they better, but these old csreer dems are too lazy.

6

u/Genghis_Chong 3d ago

Scared too. A lot of people are scared that they'll be the first "lib" to be punished, as Trump promised jail for a lot of these people in his campaigning.

But if you're taking a leadership role you have to be brave.

5

u/Inept-One 3d ago

Well if that happened there would be hell to pay. This is america not russia.

You start acting like a true fascist dictator in this country and there will be serious consequences.

4

u/Genghis_Chong 3d ago

You're right, unfortunately that reasoning hasn't stopped him from getting to this point, nobody knows where he will stop with his overreach. He's talking about a third term one month in. He wants to annex Canada.

They absolutely have to grow balls and do their job, but it's not without considerable pressure.

The vote can be both a signal and ultimately meaningless. And that speech can be both well intended and entirely performative.

If anything this shows us that McConnell knows what's best for the country but has knowingly been choosing his party's interests instead. It's only when he has one foot out the door that he finally steps up.

The Schumer's and Pelosi's are no different.

This Trump show needs to create a reckoning where we start to demand more from our politicians across the aisle.

3

u/TruePutz 3d ago

What do you want to see them do?

5

u/FiscallyAwareGang 3d ago

I am assuming by them you mean the Dems. I'm not a political consultant, I'm a financial advisor.

Imo Dems need to start harping the administration with economic theory. They need to find ways to educate the public on what the effects of this tariff policy will be. They can't be inflammatory and talk about "Trump taxing your grocery prices", because that just gets dismissed as political division. They need to make economic theory digestible and educate the American people. They need to have the actual economists being paraded around talking about why globalism is benefitting us and isolationism will hurt us. They need to hammer home that you can work in an office for 40hrs/week or a factory for 50 to have the same quality of life.

5

u/Western-Boot-4576 3d ago

They do and did people just donā€™t listen

→ More replies (10)

6

u/Competitive_Shift_99 3d ago

Educate the American people. Lol.

These people recoil from being educated as if they just stuck their hand in a burning oil slick. Good luck with that.

3

u/TheBigC87 3d ago

Bold of you to assume that this countries citizens will be able to do this. We live in a country of idiots, they don't even know what a tariff is.

At some point the American public needs to be held accountable for just being fucking stupid and apathetic and not taking their civic duty seriously.

u/stewmander 3d ago

It is incredibly meaningful. So were the 6 republicans who voted in favor of proxy votes that pissed off the speaker. It shows there's some hope that politicians aren't blindly following party lines knowing the intention is to destroy the economy, the government, and America itself.

We know they will do bad things, but if we can limit the damage now it gives us a chance to fix things in the future.

3

u/PrisonMike022 3d ago

I mean, itā€™s a Wā€¦ for now. But this just means itā€™s going to get pushed to the House. And the House has a pretty solid majority for Republicunts.

Now letā€™s say we do get a miracle, the House passes it. Amazing, but Cheezus the Orange can still veto it and require 2/3s voting at that time. And I just donā€™t see 3 miracles happening in a rowšŸ¤¦šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

3

u/Playingwithmyrod 3d ago

Itā€™s good to see resistance but the man who this is trying to stop is ultimately the man who will get to veto this bill. They canā€™t get a 2/3 majority for this.

2

u/Teriyaki456 3d ago

This vote wonā€™t stop the tariffs though, trump will just make sure his executive order stand correct?

→ More replies (4)

2

u/Still-Chemistry-cook 3d ago

But the vote literally does nothing?

2

u/mrjinks 3d ago

Yeah youā€™re right about doing the right thing but itā€™s probably too late the damage has been done at the expense of decent and magas alike.

2

u/CharlesLeChuck 3d ago

It's crazy how people want some pushback and then when it happens those same people are the first to say how it's meaningless and won't change a thing. This is a great first step. His own party is starting to stand up against him and we're less than three months in. Keep it coming.

If anything this might help save SOME goodwill with foreign trade after trump, especially if we can keep reversing tariffs

2

u/Ok-Replacement9595 3d ago

They could have passed a law, you know the purpose and job of congress, to bar trumps tariffs, but this was a non-binding resolution that a few senators could vote for to save face.

I am done with performative politics as we slip into fascism. They either stand up for the constitution or they do not.

At least thereā€™s a little bit of democracy left. Any time Trump is questioned or voted down, itā€™s very meaningful because it means there is still a democratic process that is understood to be important. Any time Trump gets to do whatever he wants, he pushes the boundaries of what he can get away with the next time.

You know...1 good thing about Trump I think both sides can agree on.

It will make the Senate and Congress take back a lot of power they gave to the executive branch over the years!

Moscow Mitch had the chance to kill Trump in his his tracks. Don't ever think the Senators from Kentucky did the right thing. They did because their KY booze won't be sold in Canada That's all they got. Can't sell The Dreby

Rolling back Donald Trumpā€™s unwise decisions, one Executive Order at a time.

We could be here for 100 years undoing Trumpā€™s damage.

Now make every single republican house member be on record voting for Tariffs. This is a big deal. They are going to own it now and hopefully now be less willing to follow him off this cliff as the market gets pounded day after day and we zombie walk to recession

Performative nonsense. They don't have enough votes to beat a veto.
