Arrested for complaining about a school

So the state of “free speech” in the UK is truly horrifying. See here: https://youtu.be/3Zfz5rjjifM?si=OBVC3J9ZzzPRK3U4

Yeah england doesn’t have free speech. They have a nice clock though, that’s something to be proud of.

u/Tlyss 4d ago

If you say it’s not a nice clock you could be arrested

The Communications Act 2003 [which] defines illegal communication as “using public electronic communications network in order to cause annoyance, inconvenience or needless anxiety”.

This has been going on for a long time already. It not a recent development. See arrests from 2010:

That is just a stupid law.

u/Invisible_Stud 4d ago

The Nazis approve of it

4

u/Krunkbuster 3d ago

They’re Nazis cosplaying as decent people

2

u/Away_Bite_8100 3d ago

I don’t like throwing words like Nazi around so casually… but yeah it’s pretty dictatorial.

u/Dubaku 4d ago

What a shit hole.

u/rmullig2 4d ago

They didn't even say anything bad about Muslims, usually that's what gets you thrown in jail over there.

Wow, British society is even crazier than Canada. WTF Britain?

2

u/ComfortabinNautica 3d ago

The UK has never been one for free speech. However , the same thing is happening in the states now too- in fact I’d argue that we effectively no longer have free speech here either, except it’s not codified in law to the extent it is in the UK. Remember that stage of grade 8-12 in school where kids would have immature fights over the slightest thing someone said or someone thought they said? Yeah- that’s the entire western world right now.

1

u/Krunkbuster 3d ago

Well free speech only protects us from the government. Still isn’t a great idea to bring up politics near people with low EQ/crazy.

2

u/ComfortabinNautica 3d ago

My problem with that idea is that the electronic communication network is a creation of the government, built for the benefit of private actors. Instead of using that network as intended, for the benefit of the US citizenry, private actors turn it into a tool of censorship. That shouldn’t be allowed. Just as it is illegal to use the post office system to promote fraudulent activity contrary to the interests of US taxpayers , it’s reasonable to prohibit censorship using the internet.

But yeah- politics is a third rail for me. I hardly ever bring it up at all in person unless I’m confident that a person I’m talking to is interested in it.

That's not really what they got arrested for though, is it?

31

u/gagz118 4d ago

What was their offense?

-52

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

It's been widely covered in the news.

41

u/calimeatwagon 4d ago

Or in other words, you don't know.

-38

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

It's been widely reported on.

37

u/gagz118 4d ago

And of course you’re incapable of summarizing their “real” offenses in a sentence or two. Thanks for nothing.

-13

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

Because it's been widely reported on.

31

u/walkinthedog97 4d ago

Lol why don't you just say what they got arrested for if youre so sure?

-7

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

Because it's been widely reported on.

"criticising a school" isn't an arrestable offence.

27

u/walkinthedog97 4d ago

Got it. Well when I look it up all the articles are talking about what exactly that video was talking about. So unless you wanna enlighten us as to what really happenned, nobody knows what you're talking about.

-8

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

Really? They all say they were arrested on suspicion of criticising a school?

Definitely going to need a source on that my friend. No custody Sargent is going to accept that.

23

u/walkinthedog97 4d ago

Dude why don't you just say what the real story is you're the one saying you know what's really up

-5

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

It's been widely reported.

19

u/Sometimes_good_ideas 4d ago

This has me laughing so hard, why doesn’t this fella just say the reason? It’s like some weird pride and ego thing😂

u/RealisticTadpole1926 4d ago

Could you provide one of those sources?

-2

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

Choose whatever news source you trust that reported on it and read for yourself. Beyond the headline of course.

17

u/RealisticTadpole1926 4d ago

I did, didn’t see anything that supports what you said. So you’re a liar until you prove otherwise.

-1

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

Wait, so you think they were charged with "criticising a school"?

My friend, that's not an arrestable offence on the books anywhere in the UK.

14

u/RealisticTadpole1926 4d ago

Yet they were arrested for no more than complaining about their daughter’s school. The crime is called “malicious communications”, and it’s not the first time someone was arrested under that law for something as benign as a complaint.

7

u/Micro-Naut 4d ago

But has that been widely reported?

0

u/RealisticTadpole1926 3d ago

Not sure what your point is.

"It has been widely reported on"

"By who?"

"Go find it yourself"

-2

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

Pretty much. This way you can't do the old reddit "oh no we don't like that news source".

This way you can find the one you like, and read it there.

3

u/NotaInfiltrator 4d ago

This is like one of those soviet era double speaks where the commissar knows he has to give an answer, but also knows if he gives the wrong answer he'll be arrested, so he just repeats the most vague and inconclusive phrase possible in order to avoid the gulag. 10/10 post, I love it.

-1

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

Wait, you actually think they've been charged with "criticising a school"?

What act is that under?

2

u/NotaInfiltrator 4d ago

Oh! Oh! And now I ask "What were they charged with, oh wise one?" And then you'll answer with...

-2

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 4d ago

I'm waiting for you to figure it out.....

It's incredible how people like you completely fall for fake news so easily.

0

u/NotaInfiltrator 3d ago

No no no, that's not your line! You're supposed to say 'Its been widely reported', now shall we try again?

0

u/Turbulent_Can9642 1d ago

Dude, you are the one saying it is wrong. Now, it is up to you to prove that it is wrong since you are the one who said it was wrong in the first place. Just like if you say something that has been proven with evidence to be true is false. You can't just say "no, you are wrong" with nothing to back it up. You would be laughed out of any courtroom if you were a lawyer.

1

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 21h ago

I didn't realise reddit comments were supposed to be the standard of whatever your countries courts are 😂

0

u/Turbulent_Can9642 19h ago

That's the standard universally if putting forth a statement as fact

Horray, we got there in the end

0

u/Away_Bite_8100 38m ago

I’m not the person you were doing the long back and forth with so I don’t know what you mean by that… maybe you are confusing me with someone else.

Regardless… it’s a highly oppressive anti-free-speech law. If I am in a position of power and I deem your communication as an “annoyance” or an “inconvenience” then by definition you have broken the law.

1

u/Taken_Abroad_Book 11m ago

Not really how it works at all. Hence them not being charged.
