Mod Post Updates to the r/espresso relevancy rule & content moderation

Hey r/espresso,

We understand that recent political and economic events, including tariffs imposed by the U.S. administration and affected countries, are having a significant impact on the coffee industry and the wider community. These are important issues, and we recognize that many of you may be feeling concerned, frustrated, and upset.

However, r/espresso is a subreddit dedicated to the hobby of espresso. Our focus here is on sharing knowledge and experiences related to brewing tasty coffee. While we acknowledge the broader context of the coffee world, this isn't the appropriate venue for extensive political discussion or debate.

Therefore, we want to remind everyone to keep discussions on-topic. While it's okay to briefly acknowledge the impact of external factors, please refrain from derailing threads into broader political commentary, "circlejerking", or extended discussions of economic policy.

Specifically:

  • Stay focused on espresso: Keep your comments and posts related to espresso
  • Avoid political debates: This is not the place for partisan arguments or discussions about government policy.
  • No excessive complaining or "echo chamber commentary": While acknowledging challenges is fine, repeated negativity and unproductive complaining detract from the core purpose of the subreddit.

Moderation:

If you see a post that breaks the subreddit relevancy rule, please just report it instead of adding fanning the flames. We will be removing threads and comments that violate these guidelines. Repeat offenders may be subject to temporary or permanent bans.

There is zero-tolerance policy for users who instigate heated debates or rhetoric, including attempts to do so through jokes or veiled comments. Such behaviour will result in immediate and potentially permanent bans.

We understand that passions can run high, but we ask that you respect the purpose of this community and help us maintain a positive and focused environment for espresso enthusiasts.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Mod Post Introducing the r/espresso Coffee Bean Database: a place for people to share—and get recommendations for—beans and brewing recipes

A common question we see on this sub is about coffee bean recommendations—whether it's newcomers just getting into espresso or seasoned home baristas looking for fresh, local offerings. Many of you have also asked for a place to discover brewing recipes for specific beans.

We're happy to announce a new community-driven resource to address these needs! Introducing a platform where people can share the beans they've brewed and the recipes they've used.

How it works:

1. Submit your brews: Share your favorite coffees and brewing parameters using this Google Form. The form collects:

  • Basic details about the beans (roaster, roast date, etc.)
  • Your brewing recipe (e.g., dose, yield, shot time)
  • Equipment used
  • You do not need a Google account to fill out the form and no personal information will be collected.

2. Explore the database: View all submissions in a publicly accessible Google Sheet.

  • Use filters (e.g., Roaster's country, Cost-per-unit-weight) by selecting Data > Create filter view in the toolbar.
  • Note: The spreadsheet is view-only and updates automatically with new submissions. You can download or copy it, but those versions won't receive updates.

Tip: For the best experience, view the spreadsheet on a desktop browser.

Our goal:

We hope this grows into an invaluable resource for the community—a way to share your favourite coffees and provide others with a reference point to kickstart their brews. This is your chance to contribute to (and benefit from) a collaborative coffee knowledge base!

Let us know if you have suggestions for improving the form or the database.

Happy brewing!

Humour POV of trying to dial in a new bag of beans

Attempt #666. I have now added a Magick amulet and a black candle for my next micro adjustment. This should get me a little closer to a decent shot. Also 'Dawn of the Black Hearts' playing in the background to get me through these tough times.

Dialing In Help Why is my espresso sour? [Turin Legato and DF64]

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Recently bought the Turin legato and df64 grinder and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but it tastes so sour. I'm using 18g of beans on grind size of about 11. When I was using grind 15 | couldn't get the bars above 4 so l went a little finer and now it's even more sour. The pressure is at 9. My friend said to turn the water heat down to 93. Didn't help. I'm getting 36g of espresso out. The beans were roasted 2/7.

My Silvia is leaking when I pull shots. I had this problem previously, and just replaced the group head gasket with a nice one, but it keeps on leaking.. what could be the issue?

Notneutral Vero espresso glasses. Very nice, delightfully heavy to hold. Tested them out with too-fresh beans but after a few days it's pouring very nicely at 20in, 44 out with 4s pre then a 25s pour.

Equipment Discussion ECM Puristika = Love

Post image

Can I just say how much I love my Puristika!!?? If you are a pure espresso drinker or Americano drinker, you can’t go wrong. I have had it about a year now and it has been flawless. I was on the fence for a while and couldn’t decide if I wanted a machine with a steam wand but I couldn’t find anything that I liked as much design wise. Well, at least that was affordable. I have it paired with a Eureka Perfetto but thinking I might upgrade to a pure espresso grinder. The perfetto is great for pour over or drip but you have to set it to just about Turkish to grind fine enough. Plus, cleaning is a pain. ECM makes a compatible grinder in the matching cream color but it seems to be fairly average for the price. If on the fence, go for it.. Pulls amazing shots once you get past the learning curve and have it dialed in properly.

Coffee Station I can’t be the only one…

Anyone else use an old school label maker to label their beans? I like the vibe the font gives off, and it’s much less work than using a hair dryer to remove the label from the bag and applying the label to my vacu container. Also, Thump single origin Boliva is very nice.

Coffee Station New long term espresso setup

Hi, i wanted to share my newly acquired machine, share the station it's situated in, and a pic of my first shot of espresso using this machine.

Picked up the Sage Touch Impress from new as the price and time seemed right (£849) I also brought a coffee distribution tool because people suggest they can improve espresso quality

Initial thoughts The user interface seems very easy and amateur friendly, especially for those who are semi beginner in their espresso journey such as me, the 'Intelligent brew' and 'Intelligent dose' function works a treat in helping me gauge a beginner benchmark for espresso.

Conclusion I'm very happy with this machine and ready to begin my learning journey in espresso!

Any tips or advise very welcome!

Equipment Discussion I’m so sorry for doubting!

I have been using DeLonghi machine to made my espresso every morning, for the past year. I have only be using ground espresso coffee with its pressurized portafilter. The espresso always come out bitter, dark and so that is what I believed espresso supposed to taste like, even after well stirred.

However I recently bought a decent (not expensive or perfect) grinder and want to try out what is the differences between Coffee Bean & Ground are. Let me tell you, the differences are night and day, it’s not bitter or chalky! It’s slightly sweet, the crema is a bit lighter and aroma just overall smoother, I don’t have to drink with added sugar or creamer, only milk & espresso is enough. I love it! Everything is still the same, however the only different is freshly grind bean and pre-ground. Both store bought (not local roaster).

Espresso Theory & Technique Machines without 3-way solenoid valve

For machines without a 3-way solenoid valve like the Breville Bambino (non-plus), do you let the drips after stopping the pump go into your cup?

For 18g in, I usually stop the pump after 28g and then let the drips get me to about 36-38g total out. I’m wondering if I should instead let the pump go on until 36g out and then remove the cup and let the drips go to drip tray instead.

Steaming & Latte Art It was supposed to be a heart…

Still learning but have had some funny, unintentional mistakes along the way. Any advice on a simple heart? I pour in one spot after filling the glass close to the top at an angle. Then I put the tip of my milk jug close to the top and go through the milk to turn it into a heart.

Buying Advice Needed First espresso machine purchase [$700]

$700 Canadian!

I’ve been using a nespresso machine and have recently come to realize that I just don’t love it or drip coffee. Whenever I buy a coffee drink out I’m always getting an espresso based one.

I’m looking now to buy my first proper espresso machine but know my budget isn’t great. I did search through this sub for the Breville ones as that’s what I was looking at - some of the reviews seem less than great.

Looking for any guidance or opinions!

Thanks so much

Scored a pretty sweet deal on a ROK. Everything’s in great shape except this pitted portafilter. I’m guessing it’s probably not safe to use as-is, right? Is there any way to fix this or do I just have to replace it?

I recently upgraded my coffee station. Started with the BBE and Niche Zero and upgraded to the r58 with a newly purchased Mazzer Philos. Also, purchased the tool chest to have sufficient space to store all the tools in a neat way
