ICE
I’ve been thinking about this for a while: What are the chances of ICE coming to the Willamette Valley area? I ask because I’m a Hispanic immigrant with citizenship, but that seems to mean little to what feels like a modern-day Gestapo. I already carry both my driver’s license and passport with me at all times for this reason. If they were to detain me, what advice would you give?
Edit: Thank you to those that provided information and support. To those that keep telling me to not worry if I'm legal however I offer the following from the AP News service (bipartisan and relatively neutral coverage):
https://apnews.com/article/immigration-arrests-chicago-complaint-bcc80d6aeeed824428431a318e427cd3
I have a reason to be fearful and paranoid because I have been racially profiled before mainly in the southwest i.e. NM, AZ, etc. I've even had the police called on me while at work in uniform. So, to me, it can happen here in Oregon especially since I travel daily around the Willamette Valley region and it only takes one overexcited person to call in a tip.

They're already here. They've been spotted downtown several times over the past few months

So many people keep telling me not to worry; it's frustrating. I have PTSD, and this exacerbates it.

I’m so sorry. Just… damn it. I’m so sorry you are living your life feeling terrorized. And that none of us can tell you, “eh, don’t worry about it!”
ICE was active in the Willamette Valley 2016-2020. There’s no reason to expect anything different now.
You’re doing the right thing in carrying all of your ID. Maybe set up a daily check in with someone you trust? Keep your eyes open and quietly go the other way when ICE is around.
Fortunately, our state refuses to give info to ICE.
The only comfort I have right now is cold comfort indeed: you aren’t alone. If anyone thinks they’re gonna stop with rounding up anyone who looks Hispanic, they’re fooling themselves.
I suppose I have one other, possibly more comforting, response - I’m looking out for ICE too. And I’m willing to interfere in their attempts to take people off the street. I know I’m not the only one.

Who am I saying we? Well it you, you ain’t Hispanic, you’re white so we ain’t talking bout you goofy
-13
u/kings00789 21h ago
We’re not, we’re okay. If we’re legal. Those of us who aren’t have to live in fear.
8
u/perseidot 18h ago
Who the fuck are you calling “we?”
This part of “we” is definitely NOT ok. As long as due process is being ignored, none of us are ok.
When the US government can take even ONE person off the street, deport them to a foreign prison by mistake and without due process then none of us are ok.
When this administration refuses to acknowledge the judicial order to bring a citizen home after illegal deportation, then none of us are ok.

-6

Cause you do not need to worry, if we’re legal it’s not an issue for us
1
u/Brat_gutz 18h ago
They already onto you lol, sassy
1
u/kings00789 16h ago
They’re mad because I got white people trynna tell me how to feel about things, they’re so goofy
0
u/kings00789 16h ago
It’s always the Eugene white folks trynna tell me how I’m supposed to struggle or how I’m supposed to feel about things, I’m just saying have ur papers wit you, this mostly doesn’t even apply to us US AS IN HISPANICS WHO ARE LEGAL, not saying it doesn’t happen. I’m just saying we should be worrying significantly less
3
u/Brat_gutz 16h ago
As a card carrying member of the Klamath umatilla tribes, someone who’s family has been here since crater lake exploded, I can tell you they’ve already started deporting people who took all the legal steps necessary to attain proper immigrant status.
1
u/kings00789 16h ago
I hope they aren’t onto me :( lmfao
3
u/Brat_gutz 16h ago
I was being sarcastic w that one. But imagine how it would feel if they were actually onto you, even after thinking you did everything right.
1
u/kings00789 16h ago
That’s facts, they seem to be missing my point, I was just saying those of us Hispanics who are legal, don’t have to worry AS much. But those of us who aren’t need to live in fear and that’s just horrible to think about, I feel you fr

u/Brat_gutz 16h ago
The dumb leading the blind🤦🏻♀️
1
u/kings00789 16h ago
Idk if ur talkin bout me but if you’re talkin bout them I agree, all I said is I’m not worrying until I have a real reason, have I spoke Spanish a lot less? Yes. Does it suck? Yes. These are interesting times and I’m praying for everyone affected
2
u/Brat_gutz 16h ago
Have you ever heard of the trail of tears? They really don’t give a fuck who is where and how legal it is, all you are is either cheap labor or just simply in the way.

What do they look like? Just people in plain clothes?

This is the problem, you won’t see them until it’s too late.

u/Affectionate-Art-995 18h ago
Never have seen any here other than the Homeland Security officers, they wear uniforms. Good god

They could be your neighbors, they could even be your best friend. They’ll be in completely normal clothes and then bam! You’ve been iced!

-32
u/scroder81 1d ago
Yep, proved my point. Obama had the most removals!
15
u/Budtending101 1d ago
You said deportations
-19
u/scroder81 1d ago
Yep, deportations are removals. Not turn around at the border, etc.
13
u/Budtending101 1d ago
Returns are deportations as well, just not as formal. And not as impactful
8
u/scroder81 1d ago
Directly from the article that you forgot to post
These figures demonstrate the Obama administration’s focus on formal removals instead of returns, with formal removals under Obama far outpacing those of the Bush and Clinton administrations even as returns were far lower. This policy to ensure that removals have a lasting legal consequence likely reduced the number of unauthorized immigrants attempting to cross the border multiple times: Overall, recidivism along the border fell from 29 percent in FY 2007 to 14 percent in FY 2014, and was much higher for migrants given voluntary return (31 percent) than for those subjected to formal removal (18 percent), according to CDS data.
https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/obama-record-deportations-deporter-chief-or-not
5
u/Budtending101 1d ago
Yes? It says returns were far lower and removals higher. Those are both deportations so I’m not sure what you think this proves. I said removals had more impact and this proves that
6
u/scroder81 1d ago
A deportation order is a legal document issued by an immigration judge that orders the removal of a non-citizen from the United States. Once a deportation order is issued, the non-citizen may be subject to removal at any time. Much harder to get than an administrative removal.
→ More replies (0)8
u/drrevo74 1d ago
Look closer at the chart. Removals plus returns equals total deportations. Removals and returns are just two different kinds of deportations. In Obama did not have the most. Focusing on removals and ignoring returns is just splitting hairs in search of a talking point.

I have heard that they have been in Eugene recently but I am unsure. Civil Liberties Defense Center just did a great set of trainings, I believe one can be found here: https://cldc.org/resources-for-immigrants-and-allies/
Their Know Your Rights materials are really helpful: https://cldc.org/know-your-rights/
I would definitely reach out to them if you have any additional questions - they have lawyers on staff and I found the training I went to extremely helpful!

We’ve gotten a certified copy of my husbands naturalization document and have it in the car as well. IDK if it would matter if the law isn’t being followed.
3
u/flowerpotsally 23h ago
I’m so sorry this is our reality and you have to deal with that.
10
u/erika1972 22h ago
thanks. it’s so stupid. i’m not SUPER worried bc he’s been a citizen for a long time and has no legal issues, so under previous administrations (and under the law), he’s fine.
but we did rethink international travel bc we’re concerned….
and he canNOT get deported, he’s from the middle east.
then again, these dumb mfers would probably deport him to mexico.

My wife just became a citizen in January but sadly I don’t think they even care. At least she is white so less risk, but at some point they will be looking for more who don’t agree with current politics.
7
u/erika1972 22h ago
Yeah, that’s my concern too, that the law isn’t being followed. They did said if you travel internationally, use a burner phone so when they request to see your phone when you’re coming back in the country, they won’t see anti-orangeasshole stuff.
2
u/jarlybartski 18h ago
Burner phones are key sadly for us who travel to see extended family since we no longer have freedom.

u/Alarming-Ad-6075 1d ago
There is an ICE office here in the federal building
21
u/ferngully1114 1d ago
Not sure why this is downvoted. They have been there for years. DHS has a large portion of the offices in that building.
11
u/nextboldmove 1d ago
I am surprised this wasn't higher. They've been in that building for at least 17 years.
7
1
u/Affectionate-Art-995 18h ago
If they've been there 17 yrs and no Hispanics I know have been bothered, including business owners, then that days everything OP needs to know
3
u/nextboldmove 15h ago
It’s a different world out there now. It’s wild you think it’s going to be business as usual.
5
u/hornedup84 1d ago
Now I'm sad.
1
u/Affectionate-Art-995 18h ago
Why?
The business owners I know not any employees have ever been bothered
1
-3
u/scroder81 1d ago
Does that matter. The FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals, BOP, HSI, and IRS-CI all have title 8 immigration authority now and all have been out rounding up illegals.
9
u/Alarming-Ad-6075 1d ago
Why do I even try to tell people what they ask. Y’all can’t stay on topic and just have some weird need to control conversations so you can say what you want to look smart.
It’s exhausting
2
u/scroder81 1d ago
I'm not saying any random thing, they all have immigration authority and have been documented arresting illegals. https://immpolicytracking.org/policies/dhs-grants-broader-immigration-arrest-powers-to-justice-dept-federal-agents/

u/Alarming-Ad-6075 1d ago

4
u/Jthundercleese 1d ago
Being undocumented in the U.S. is not a crime, Even overstaying a visa does not results in criminal charges.
3
u/scroder81 1d ago
Maybe you should actually read something.
8USC1325 Any alien who (1) enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers, or (2) eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers, or (3) attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact, shall, for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under Title 18 or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offense, be fined under Title 18, or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.
The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) covers visa overstays in section 222(g). Remaining in the United States after a visa overstay may result in the accrual of unlawful presence that will count toward the 3- and 10- year bars of inadmissibility.
2
u/RosellaDella93 12h ago
Nothing in this paragraph talks about overstaying a visa, it's about unlawful entry. Did YOU read it?
-4
u/snail-away- 1d ago
Woah there is?? This is the place to protest
4
u/Critical_Concert_689 22h ago
I absolutely support your right to protest and think protesting at the source - government/federal buildings - is the correct place to do so.
I doubt local ICE agents have much say on policy though.
27
u/LimpProfession7800 1d ago
I hate this - that Hispanic people are having to go thru this. This is insanity!
22
u/thepu55ycat 1d ago
I’m Puerto Rican and I have had MAGA idiots tell me I should be deported. What school did these idiots go to? I’m literally afraid to go out.
16

I know Native Americans who've heard the same thing. It's disgusting.
13
u/thepu55ycat 1d ago
I can’t believe I’m in one of the most liberal progressive cities in the country and I’m literally afraid to go out. Unreal. So glad I lived on an aircraft carrier for this country.
Telling Native Americans they’ll be deported is insanity.
10
u/Jthundercleese 1d ago
I worked mostly blue collar jobs in and around Eugene - steel, cabinetry, material handling etc - and the comfort and ease with which so many of them were just blatantly, explicitly racist, completely unprompted, was astonishing.

u/Baroness_Of_Bones 1d ago
Building a strong network of Friends, Families and coworkers is an important way to keep yourself safe. People who will make it nearly impossible for ICE to effectively abuse their power. People who will warn others when they see the trucks and who will film everything. If you are detained I would suggest complying as loudly as possible to draw as much attention as you can without being "unruly" or "disrespectful". The more eyes on you and the agents the less likely they are to get away with whatever they were trying to get away with.
14
u/SpartacusTRector 1d ago
I am the same as you. Perhaps we should form a group to develop ways to help people. I am certain you and I aren't the only ones who have this worry.
12
-2
u/kings00789 21h ago

u/SpartacusTRector 16h ago
There are many examples of Hispanics who are "legal" and nonetheless taken away.
12
9
u/nextboldmove 1d ago
I have heard that it is a good idea if you are an individual who might be profiled by ICE, you should put together an envelope of documents (lease, payment receipts, W2s, tax returns) that show your presence here for the last two years. If ICE is complying with the law, these documents confer additional rights to due process, and it might be hard to find these documents under pressure, in the moment.

u/hornedup84 1d ago
It's a sorry world that I have to produce papers. I served in the Army, damn it.

u/Spinswell 1d ago
The amount of US veterans that’ve been deported is an extra level of horrific most people don’t know about
8

I'm really, really sorry. This is all completely fucked up, and I hope you put all the work into making your packet and then you never need it.

u/Spinswell 1d ago
I had posted awhile back that I had heard from a friend in a similar situation that ice was coming through town in the next day or two.
I was immediately set upon by many people (Including a professor at the U of O funnily enough) telling me I was spreading fear, etc, etc .
Guess who showed the fuck up the next day?
Mutual aid groups in town have their ear to the ground, i’d reach out to a few or follow their various accounts.

Plead 5, and don’t answer any of their question without a lawyer present. If they detain you, remain calm. And know that there are people in the community, besides me, who want you to thrive and are wishing you the best to be safe.
4
u/NoLipGuy 21h ago
Is there any evidence that legal immigrants who have citizenship here have been deported? Evidence, not stories or hearsay. Propaganda is running wild right now so I don’t trust anything I hear anymore on its face.
-1
u/hornedup84 21h ago
2
u/NoLipGuy 20h ago
This is interesting and definitely a unique situation considering he entered America illegally to begin with and is still not a citizen. I don’t see how this should be a catalyst to concern people who immigrated legally and are citizens though.
0
u/hornedup84 20h ago
4
u/NoLipGuy 20h ago
And this story says 1 us citizen was detailed/ handcuffed for a few hours because he had the same name as his wanted son. This doesn’t seem that unreasonable. I’ll give you another try I guess but your credibility is slipping.
2
u/hornedup84 20h ago
Look this is the information I have, you are able to do the same research. If you don't have anything useful to provide then I advise you to go elsewhere.
1
u/NoLipGuy 20h ago
Just trying to help you think for yourself. News agencies spitting propaganda don’t tell you they are giving you propaganda. But you can be sure most news has bias to some ideology (almost always undisclosed). Be careful if you hear something that tries to convince you about something through your emotions alone if the facts don’t back it up. Stay safe out there
2
u/hornedup84 20h ago
I am always skeptical but I am still human who happens to be fearful of law enforcement and wary of people. PTSD fucking sucks but I can't stop it.
3
u/NoLipGuy 20h ago
Sorry to hear that and I hope you get the help you need. For law abiding citizens (of all backgrounds) the police are a blessing so that we don’t have to rely purely on ourselves to keep our communities safe. Yes bad people exist in every type of group but don’t throw out the baby with the bath water so to speak.

We all can exercise our 5th Amendment right, which isn't useless. I'm not an ICE demographic, but I work in a place where vulnerable people could receive services. The direction we received is to say nothing and don't get talked into letting them past the lobby. They may play nice or use intimidation to access areas and information they don't even understand.
This extends to being out in the world as a yt person. I'm not sure what I can do in any given situation, but I can avoid making it worse.
2
u/NoObjective8146 1d ago
They’ve come to Eugene before they’ll do it again understand until you have your papers it’s really not safe anywhere

There is already an ICE force here. When you really need to be worried is if they start bringing in outside teams.
2
u/Critical_Concert_689 23h ago edited 22h ago
If they were to detain me, what advice would you give?
Same as with any arrest: Do what they say.
Be polite and provide the feds the information that they will inevitably ask for. You can be proactive in letting them know they're wrongfully detaining you and need to check your ID.
This protects you from injury and ultimately will let you go about your day much faster.
2
1
u/Jolly-Sandwich-3345 1d ago
Other Feds might be mobilized to enforce immigration laws. I think the FBI and BATF have a presence in the old Federal Courthouse.

all i can say is As a Native Person to be living in a time like - where the dumbasses rule the world, thats literally the best you can do and i suggest sadly just sont go anywhere because there other others that will literally call ice just because some ppl like being being a terrible person.. thats all, just be careful
1
u/kings00789 21h ago
Idk how many times people need to say this, if. You’re. Documented. Don’t. Worry. I’m Hispanic as well, no reason for us to attract unnecessary attention, don’t let the white people fear monger either. We’re okay. As long as we’re legal.
2
u/hornedup84 21h ago
They've detained and deported people with legal status.
1

Please set up a Dead Man's Switch service, which will email/text your specified contacts if you don't check in with the account for a certain amount of time. You can choose the amount of time and contacts and messages sent, and that should help to notify people if (gods forbid) something were to happen. Stay alert and be kind to everyone even if they don't deserve it, the police are absolutely not your friends now (nor were they really ever). I hope this all adds up to nothing for you, but CYA is smart right now.

If you’re legal to be here, you have nothing to worry about. If there is a viable reason for them to pursue you such as illegal status, expired visa, you’re a criminal, ect. Then yeah be worried.

u/scroder81 1d ago
Detaining is not the same as being deported. Thousands of Americans are detained everyday by LE for questioning or witness to a crime, etc. Being detained for questioning is not illegal.

9
u/Baroness_Of_Bones 1d ago
They can still harass, detain, search households and break up families. They should be worried but building a good network of friends, families and coworkers who are willing to stand up for you will go a long way when it comes to your and your families safety.
